Free agent infielder Darwin Barney signed with the Rangers to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. The versatile 32-year-old spent the previous two-and-a-half years with the Blue Jays, this past season sporting an ugly .232/.275/.327 batting line. Barney cannot hit a lick, but he is a capable defender at shortstop, second and third base and that should give him a shot to capture a bench spot in Texas.
Josh Donaldson Out Wednesday, Darwin Barney To Start
Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson will rest Wednesday evening and be replaced by infielder Darwin Barney. Donaldson has battled his through a rough season in which he has hit .254 but does have 25 home runs. Barney doesn't hold much value in daily leagues as he is more in there for his defense. Donaldson is expected to be back in the lineup Friday.
