Orioles Designate Darwinzon Hernandez For Assignment
The Baltimore Orioles designated left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez for assignment on Thursday to make room on the 40-man roster for left-hander Cole Irvin, who was acquired in a trade with the Oakland Athletics. Baltimore landed Hernandez in a trade with the Boston Red Sox earlier this offseason, but the 26-year-old southpaw could be on the move yet again. He only tossed 6 2/3 relief innings for Boston in 2022 and was beat up to the tune of 17 runs (16 earned) on 14 hits (four home runs allowed) while walking eight and striking out nine. The Venezuelan reliever has interesting stuff but has yet to put it all together at the big-league level in four years with the Red Sox. If Hernandez clears waivers, he could return to Baltimore.
The Boston Red Sox designated left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez for assignment on Friday in order to make room on the 40-man roster for veteran third baseman Justin Turner. In his fourth big-league season in 2022, Hernandez disappointed and only pitched in 6 2/3 innings in the majors for Boston. He allowed 17 runs (16 earned) on 14 hits while walking eight and striking out nine. The 26-year-old southpaw was much better in 2021, when he had a 3.38 ERA (4.80 FIP), 1.50 WHIP and 29.7 percent strikeout rate, so perhaps he can bounce back in 2023 with a change of scenery. If Hernandez goes unclaimed on waivers, he'll be able to sign with any MLB team on the open market.
Darwinzon Hernandez Undergoes Surgery On Torn Meniscus
Boston Red Sox pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez (knee) underwent surgery on his torn meniscus on Thursday. He will be out for the remainder of the 2022 season as he begins a long rehabilitation process. The 25-year-old appeared in 48 games for the Red Sox last year and pitched to a 3.38 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP while averaging 12.2 K/9. He spent the entirety of his brief 2022 season at Triple-A, where he had a 5.95 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP over 19.2 innings.
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez will start the season at Triple-A Worcester and will make the Opening Day start in Jacksonville. The 25-year-old was hoping to open the season in Boston's bullpen as a long man, but he'll instead stay stretched out in the minors and work on his control. The Venezuelan southpaw has shown plenty of strikeout intrigue with 124 K's in 78 2/3 innings over his first three MLB seasons, but he's also walked 65 batters and must refine his control before the Red Sox can trust him back in the majors. In 48 relief outings last year, Hernandez had a 3.38 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with a 29.7% strikeout rate and a way-too-high 17.0% walk rate.
Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez is on the team's roster for the American League Championship Series. The left-hander pitched to a 3.38 ERA and a 4.79 FIP in 40 innings during the regular season. He struck out 54 batters while surrendering 31 walks. While he wasn't on Boston's roster for the Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays, Hernandez gives the club another left-handed option out of the bullpen alongside Martin Perez and Josh Taylor.
Boston Red Sox reliever Darwinzon Hernandez (COVID-19) is expected to be activated sometime next week after testing positive for the virus in July. He'll initially join the club in a long-relief role, but the inkling is that he'll shift into the starting rotation after he's built up enough arm strength. The lefty will throw three innings in his next outing at Pawtucket and will be a welcomed addition to the Red Sox, who have struggled mightily with pitching this season. Hernandez struck out 57 batters in 30 1/3 innings as a reliever in 2019, but it came at the expense of a 4.45 ERA. Fantasy managers may want to wait until he makes a start or two before deciding to pick him up.
Red Sox Building Darwinzon Hernandez Up For Multiple Innings
Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez (COVID) has continued to throw at the teams alternate site and is getting stretched out to throw multiple innings. Theres no word for sure if they want him to start games in Beantown this season, but they could certainly use an upgrade to their starting staff. Hernandez was a late arrival to summer camp after testing positive for COVID-19, and is likely a couple weeks away if hes going to join the club as a starter. The lefty made just one start in 29 appearances a year ago, but he impressed as a reliver striking out 57 batters in 30 1/3 IP. Managers should monitor Hernandezs status over the next couple of weeks since hes worth adding once active.
Boston Red Sox pitchers Eduardo Rodriguez, Josh Taylor and Darwinzon Hernandez are all getting closer to rejoining the team after their positive COVID-19 tests. Manager Ron Roenicke stated that all three of the left-handers are making progress as they attempt to return to Fenway Park with the remainder of the team. All three of them actually, the testing has been better on all three of them, Roenicke said. We know theyre getting over it and once we start getting those better tests, were getting close. Rodriguez will look to rejoin the rotation as soon as possible and fantasy owners should value the 27-year-old as they would under normal circumstances.
Boston Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said that pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez is a relief pitcher right now, but the coaching staff discussed the idea of him starting again at some point. The 23-year-old left-hander made his MLB debut in 2019 by making one start and 28 relief appearances. He posted a 4.45 ERA and 1.75 WHIP while striking out 57 hitters and walking 26 in his 30 1/3 innings. Hernandez will obviously need to improve his command if he's to have success in the big leagues over a full season, especially as a starter, but there is clear upside in his arm. With David Price now in LA, there could be an opening for Hernandez in the rotation, but he might serve as more of a swing man until further notice. Hernandez is more of a dynasty stash than a redraft target.
Boston Red Sox pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez will draw the start against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. Hernandez threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings earlier this season with four strikeouts. However, he owns a 5.13 ERA and 59/32 K/BB ratio in Double-A this year. DFS players should go ahead and stay away from Hernandez in this one.
