Right-handed pitcher David Phelps officially announced his retirement from professional baseball. The 36-year-old reliever spent 10 years in the big leagues, three each with the New York Yankees, Miami Marlins and Toronto Blue Jays. He finished up the 2022 season in Toronto with a strong 2.83 ERA (3.16 FIP), 1.30 WHIP, one save, 31 walks and 64 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings over 65 appearances (one start). Phelps made the decision to hang up his cleats after having surgery to reattach his lat muscle to his right shoulder. Over the span of his 10-year career, Phelps went 34-40 with a 3.80 ERA (3.87 FIP), 1.31 WHIP, seven saves and 22.9 percent strikeout rate in 682 2/3 innings thrown in the regular season.
Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher David Phelps (lat) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a right lat strain, according to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. Phelps exited the game prior to the eighth inning after feeling a "pang" while warming up for the inning. In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays activated Hyun-Jin Ryu from the injured list to start Thursday's game. He has been one of the better options in SV/HLD formats this season, with five holds in 11 appearances, while posting a 0.87 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings of work.
The Toronto Blue Jays placed right-hander David Phelps (lat) on the 10-day injured list on Thursday with a right lat strain. Phelps had to leave after feeling pain while warming up after entering to pitch the eighth inning in the win on Wednesday over the Oakland Athletics. In a corresponding move, the team activated starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu (gluteus) from the 10-day injured list, and the left-hander will make the start on Thursday against the A's. There is no timetable for Phelps' return, and given the nature of his ailment, don't be surprised if he's not back when his 10 days are up. The 34-year-old has been solid in relief for Toronto this year, allowing just an earned run while striking out 15 and walking four in 10 1/3 innings over 11 appearances.
Toronto Blue Jays reliever David Phelps will serve as the opener on Friday night against the Los Angeles Angels. Young starter T.J. Zeuch, who was originally expected to begin the game, will likely follow Phelps. The veteran reliever has already appeared in four games this season and has yet to allow an earned run in four innings. Given the limited stamina shown to date, Phelps isn't likely to go more than two innings. Last season, he appeared in 22 games all in relief and posted a 6.53 ERA with a K-BB of 31-5 in 20.2 innings. It's possible that manager Charlie Montoyo is looking to limit Zeuch's exposure to the Angels' big hitters at the top of the lineup.
The Toronto Blue Jays signed free-agent right-hander David Phelps to a one-year, $1.75 million deal on Thursday, according to sources. Phelps can earn another $750,000 in performance bonuses. The 34-year-old reliever became a free agent when he had his $4.5 million 2021 option declined by the Philadelphia Phillies after he went 2-4 with an ugly 6.53 ERA in the shortened 2020 season with the Phils and Brewers over 20 2/3 frames. He was much better in 2019 with the Cubs, sporting a 3.18 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings in 17 innings over 24 appearances. Phelps has a 3.95 career ERA and 1.31 WHIP in eight big-league seasons, but he won't have any fantasy appeal in a non-closing role in a hitter-friendly park and in one of the tougher divisions in baseball.
The Philadelphia Phillies continued to add to their bullpen by acquiring right-handed pitcher David Phelps just prior to the Trade Deadline from the Milwaukee Brewers. Phelps owns a 2.77 ERA in 12 appearances this season, having amassed 20 strikeouts (13.5 K/9) in that stretch. With Brandon Workman and Hector Neris already in the Phillies bullpen mix, its unlikely that Phelps has much of a path to save chances, but he could be a vital cog for holds and strikeouts, in addition to having roto upside due to his 0.69 WHIP.
Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcherDavid Phelpsstruck out three over two perfect frames of relief to take the win against the Pirates on Monday. Phelps (1-0) became the first pitcher in 2020 to solve the riddle of the extra-inning rules, as he entered the game in the 10th and shut down the Pittsburgh offense even with a runner on second base to start the inning. After a solid comeback campaign in a 2019 split between the Blue Jays and Cubs, the 33-year-old is on his way to re-establishing himself as a reliable relief arm in 2020.
The Milwaukee Brewers agreed to a one-year deal with relief pitcher David Phelps on Wednesday, according to sources. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed. Phelps spent the 2019 season with the Blue Jays and Cubs, posting a 3.41 ERA and 1.39 WHIP with 36 strikeouts and 17 walks in 34 1/3 innings over 40 relief appearances and one start. He picked up one save with the Cubs and has just six career saves in his seven seasons in the bigs. With Josh Hader and Corey Knebel (when healthy) locking down the late innings for Milwaukee, it's unlikely that Phelps will see any time in the ninth inning, leaving him with little fantasy appeal.
Toronto continued their deadline sale, shipping right-handed reliever and cash considerations to the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. In exchange, the Blue Jays receive Thomas Hatch, a right-handed pitching prospect who has a 4.59 ERA in 100 innings this year at Chicago's double-A affiliate. By acquiring Phelps, the Cubs continue to try and shore up their bullpen after trading for left-hander Derek Holland last week. By trading Phelps away, the Blue Jays keep showing that they're willing to sell anything not nailed down, as the rebuilding team continues to acquire assets before the deadline.
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher David Phelps has been named the starter for Wednesday's game against the Boston Red Sox. Jacob Waguespack was expected to draw the start, but it sounds like he'll come out of the bullpen Phelps will go an inning or two, but Waguespack will pitch the bulk of the innings. This is a situation to avoid in fantasy leagues.
