Davis Wendzel Flashing Power In Minors

Texas Ranger minor league shortstop Davis Wendzel, a Baylor product, was selected in the first round of the 2019 draft. Offensively, he does a good job putting bat to ball on pitches in the zone but remains vulnerable when chasing pitches away. He has shown flashes of power at times but doesn't project as someone who will be a major home run threat. Defensively, Wendzel is a smooth fielder with an above-average arm. These traits make up for his subpar range and could allow him to stick at shortstop long-term, though he could certainly survive a shift to second or third base. Wendzel is coming off a huge week in which he went 10-for-19 with four homers, eight RBI, five walks, and three strikeouts. He showed a blend of power and discipline, demonstrating key strides at the plate as the month comes to a close.

Davis Wendzel Out At Least Two Weeks With Wrist Sprain

Texas Rangers third baseman Davis Wendzel (wrist) will be out at least two weeks with a left wrist sprain. It's the same wrist that he suffered a hamate injury to, but it's not the same injury. The Rangers hope Wendzel can begin baseball activities by the middle of next week. The team's No. 8 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, has hit .241/.392/.362 with two home runs and seven RBI in 18 games (74 plate appearances) with Double-A Frisco so far in 2021. Wendzel is one of the more polished hitters in Texas' system and has a gap-to-gap approach at the plate from the right side. The 24-year-old has the strength to hit over 20 homers a season and is a solid defender at the hot corner. Wendzel could be more of a utility player when he reaches the major leagues, as he's also seen time at shortstop, second base and the outfield.
