Outfielder Dexter Fowler announced on Tuesday he's retiring from the league in a tweet. Fowler appeared in 14 Major League seasons, playing for the Colorado Rockies, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Angels, and Houston Astros in his big league career. The 37-year-old's best year at the plate arguably came in 2016 when he won a World Series title with the Cubs. That year, the outfielder hit .276 with a .393 on-base percentage, 13 home runs, 13 stolen bases, 84 runs scored, 48 RBI, and a 129 wRC+ in 551 plate appearances. For his career, Fowler hit .259 with a 358 on-base percentage, a 19.5 fWAR, 127 home runs, and 149 stolen bases in 5,902 Major League plate appearances.
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Dexter Fowler requested his release and is now a free agent, according to a source. Fowler signed a minor league deal with Toronto in late March after recovering from a torn ACL in his knee. The 36-year-old veteran did have five hits in 12 at-bats over three games for Triple-A Buffalo, but he'll now be looking to latch on with another team as he tries to work his way back to the majors. Fowler has appeared in only 38 major league games in the last two seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Angels, and he's hit .236/.312/.364 with four home runs, 16 RBI and 17 runs scored in 122 plate appearances. He continues to be well off the fantasy radar at the tail end of his career.
The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to sign free-agent outfielder Dexter Fowler to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training, according to a source. Fowler was limited to seven games last year with the Los Angeles Angels due to a torn ACL in his right knee that he suffered in mid-April. The 36-year-old veteran outfielder was an All-Star with the Chicago Cubs back in 2016, but he hit a combined .233/.334/.408 with 49 home runs, 177 RBI, 191 runs and 21 stolen bases in a four-year span from 2017-20 with the St. Louis Cardinals. In Toronto, he'll purely be veteran outfield depth on a stacked roster and won't have any fantasy appeal for now.
The Los Angeles Angels have reported that outfielder Dexter Fowler (knee) has a torn left ACL. He will undergo season-ending surgery. Fowler was carted off the field in the second inning of Friday's game and placed on the injured list the following day. His 2021 season comes to an end after just seven games. He can be dropped in all fantasy leagues. Fowler was the team's primary right fielder to start the year. Juan Lagares started in right field on Saturday and should see additional starts there. Jared Walsh has also played right field and his versatility should enable him to see extra starts when Albert Pujols is in at first base.
Dexter Fowler Placed On 10-Day IL With Knee Sprain
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Dexter Fowler (knee) has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left knee, according to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. Fowler had to be carted off the field in the second inning of Friday's game after injuring his knee going into second base. It's unclear how long Fowler will be out, but in the short term the Angels will likely turn mainly to Juan Lagares, who will start in Fowler's place Saturday against Toronto.
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Dexter Fowler (knee) is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Fowler suffered a knee injury in the second inning of Friday's game and was carted off the field. It sounds like he may need at least a few more days off or even require a trip to the injured list. Juan Lagares is getting the start in right field and batting ninth on Saturday. This is Fowler's first year with the Angels. Through seven games, he has gone 5-for-20 with a walk and no extra-base hits.
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Dexter Fowler is scuffling at the dish heading into the final week of Spring Training. Fowler was signed in the offseason as a veteran bat and to be reunited with manager Joe Maddon. But the veteran is off to a slow start and is slashing only .179/.194/.321. Spring Training is often reserved for veterans to find their timing but Fowler will need to produce early in order to earn at-bats in a crowded Angels outfield. For now however, Fowler is not a a fantasy option heading into upcoming drafts.
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Dexter Fowler is trying to establish himself with his new team. The veteran is very familiar with manager Joe Maddon from their glory days with the Cubs, but the 34-year-old's production has been on the slide ever since. Fowler has played only 271 games over the last three seasons and has a .679 OPS during that span. Fowler no longer appears to be a leadoff hitter but the Angels are hoping he can provide a veteran presence at the bottom of the lineup. Fowler is currently 2-for-9 at the plate through the early stages of Spring Training.
The Los Angeles Angels acquired outfielder Dexter Fowler from the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night in exchange for a player to be named later and cash considerations, according to sources. The Angels are receiving $12.75 million from St. Louis to offset Fowler's $14.5 million 2021 salary. The addition of the veteran outfielder almost certainly will mean that top prospect Jo Adell will begin the season in the minors, with Fowler taking over everyday right field duties. Fowler will be reunited with manager Joe Maddon, who he played for with the Cubs from 2015-16. Fowler waived his no-trade clause to join the Halos. The 34-year-old is in the final year of a five-year contract and hit just .233 with a .706 OPS in the shortened 2020 season. The switch-hitter slashed .238/.346/.409 with 19 homers, 24 doubles and 67 RBI in 150 games in 2019 and shouldn't be much of an option in mixed leagues to begin the season. Fowler will also be in danger of losing playing time to Adell if the youngster impresses and earns a call-up.
Giovanny Gallegos, Dexter Fowler Return To Roster Monday
St. Louis Cardinals right-handed pitcher Giovanny Gallegos (groin) and outfielder Dexter Fowlerwere both activated off of the injured list prior to Mondays contest against Kansas City. Gallegos return clouds the Cardinals bullpen scene, as he was serving as the clubs closer prior to being placed on the IL. With a 0.79 WHIP and 11.1 K/9, hes likely the best option moving forward, although how quickly he reclaims the role remains to be seen. Fowler returns to an extremely crowded outfield picture, capping his season-long intrigue over the final week. But having delivered a career-best 124 OPS+ through 23 contests this year, hell have DFS appeal when he's in the starting nine.
