Drew Butera Retires, Transitions To Coaching Role

Veteran catcher Drew Butera has made the decision to retire from the MLB. He is now transitioning into the coaching portion of his career. He will be a member of the Los Angeles Angels' coaching staff. He will serve as the team's bullpen catcher. The 38-year-old spent 12 years in the majors, playing for five different teams. Over 553 career games, he slashed .196/.252/.290 with 19 home runs.

Drew Butera Traded To Angels Friday

Texas Rangers catcher Drew Butera was traded to the Angels on Friday for cash considerations, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. Between Max Stassi landing on the injured list with a concussion and the struggles of Kurt Suzuki, the Angels look to shore up a shaky situation at catcher with this acquisition. Butera has not appeared in a game yet this season, but in 2020 he finished the year slashing .154/.190/.205 with an 11:2 K:BB ratio in 28 games with Colorado. It's unlikely that Butera will have much value in fantasy this year.

Rockies Acquire Drew Butera

The Colorado Rockies acquired catcher Drew Butera from the Kansas City Royals on Friday in exchange for relief pitcher Jerry Vasto. Butera hit just .188 with two home runs and 18 RBI in 51 games for the Royals this year. He's well off the fantasy radar.

Drew Butera Continues To Roll

Kansas City Royals backup catcher Drew Butera is on a little bit of a tear. A day after showing off his wheels by legging out an inside-the-park home run, the 34-year-old backstop smacked three hits against the Tigers. It's Butera's first three-hit game in over a year and only his third multi-hit game this season. Butera is still firmly the backup catcher with All-Star starter Salvador Perez handling the day-to-day duties, but the team may give him a few more at-bats if he can keep up his little hitting streak.

Mike Moustakas Sitting, Ramon Torres And Drew Butera Start Sunday

Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas will get a day off on Sunday. Moustakas has been struggling in the last couple of weeks. Since he had a two home run outing on May 8th, he has a .226 batting average with one home run in 73 plate appearances. The Royals will be hoping a day off allows Moustakas to snap the relative cold streak he has been on recently. Neither catcher Drew Butera nor infielder Ramon Torres figure to make much impact for DFS Sunday. Butera, who is hitting ninth, has struggled in his career against left-handed pitching with a .188 batting average. Torres is hitting eighth and has yet to hit a major league home run in 87 PAs.

Lucas Duda Sitting, Drew Butera Playing Wednesday

The Kansas City Royals will take the opportunity Wednesday to get catcher Salvador Perez some time at designated hitter. This means that first baseman Lucas Duda will sit, with catcher Drew Butera taking Perez's place behind the dish. Butera is hitting just .176 this season, and has yet to hit a home run. Butera is not a player you should be looking to use in DFS Wednesday.

Drew Butera Starting Game One Saturday

Kansas City Royals catcher Drew Butera will get the start behind the plate in game one of the double header Saturday. Salvador Perez will be the designated hitter and will liely catch the second game as he continues his return from injury. Butera is finding it tough so far this season, he has a .182 average with zero home runs and just five RBI in 51 plate appearances. Until Butera starts making regular contact he is not a catcher to consider in any format. Even getting the start Saturday, he will hit ninth, and is not someone you should consider in DFS.

Drew Butera Is Now Somewhat Fantasy Relevant

Kansas City Royals backup catcher Drew Butera has just been vaulted into the realm of short-term fantasy relevance. Starting catcher Salvador Perez was taken out by a mysterious masked suitcase/step combo, and the resulting torn MCL will leave him on the sidelines for four to six weeks to open the season. Thirty-three-year-old Butera will be shoved into the starting role until summer, and thus his skills will be needed in deep two-catcher leagues. He meets all the major requirements, such as being a warm body and seeing the field of play regularly, but fantasy owners shouldn't expect much in the way of actual performance from him. He had a shockingly good 2016 season that included a .285 batting average over 123 at-bats, but that was almost assuredly a fluke, as he's never hit nearly that well in any other year. With that said, those who are grabbing catchers from the waiver wire can't be too picky, so maybe Butera can provide a whiff of value over the next two months.

Drew Butera To Serve As Starting Catcher

Catcher Drew Butera will be tapped to fill in for the Kansas City Royals after they placed Salvador Perez on the disabled list on Monday. Butera brings solid defensive performance behind the plate, but his offensive prowess is minimal. Out of the backup role this season, the 33-year-old is hitting just .245 with two home runs in 94 at-bats. Those in AL-only leagues and extremely deep mixed leagues may be interested in Butera, but most owners should not chase after Butera in hopes that he will replace Perez's production.

Salvador Perez Out Wednesday, Drew Butera Draws The Start

After leaving last night's game with a rib injury, Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez will sit out Wednesday's contest. Perez is expected to be fine, but manager Ned Yost will give catcher Drew Butera the start tonight. Butera will bat ninth tonight.Perez has been arguably the best catcher this year alongside Buster Posey. Perez will look to play Friday when the Royals travel to face the Boston Red Sox.
