The Milwaukee Brewers signed free-agent left-hander Fernando Abad to a minor-league deal on Thursday. Abad began the 2023 season with the Colorado Rockies but was released after posting a 4.26 ERA (8.16 FIP), 2.21 WHIP, three walks and two strikeouts in just 6 1/3 innings out of the bullpen. The 37-year-old veteran southpaw was a bit better at Triple-A Albuquerque, sporting a 3.86 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, three saves and 32 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings over 26 relief appearances. Abad will strictly provide the Brewers with some left-handed relief depth in the minors, and he remains well off the fantasy radar for the rest of the year.
Rockies Sign Fernando Abad To Minor-League Contract
According to a tweet from The New York Post's Jon Heyman on Monday, the Colorado Rockies have reportedly signed left-handed relief pitcher Fernando Abad to a minor-league contract. Heyman tweeted the following on Monday morning: "Rockies sign LHP Fernando Abad to a minor league contract with a non roster invite to big league camp." The veteran relief pitcher has made an even 400 appearances at the Major League level. All told, he's logged a 3.77 ERA and a 4.22 FIP in 348.1 career innings of work. He pitched in 16 games for the Baltimore Orioles in 2021, throwing 17.2 innings for the American League East club while registering a 5.60 ERA and a 3.96 FIP. Most recently, Abad threw 43 innings for the Seattle Mariners Triple-A affiliate in 2022, pitching to a 3.56 ERA, a 4.79 FIP, 32 strikeouts, and 12 walks.
Free-agent relief pitcher Fernando Abad is getting close to signing, according to Robert Murray of FanRag Sports. "Multiple teams" are said to be involved and the thought is that something could get done in the next few days. Abad is one of the more appealing relievers left on the market, especially for teams in need of a southpaw. The 32-year-old had a 3.30 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 37/14 K/BB ratio over 43 2/3 innings last season with Boston.
