Garrett Cooper News
Miami Marlins first baseman/outfielder Garrett Cooper (pinkie) fractured his fifth metacarpal on his left hand in the fifth inning of Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Mets, per Miami Herald's Jordan McPherson. Cooper was hit by a pitch in the top of the fifth inning and went 1-for-2 with a single and a strikeout before being replaced by Charles Leblanc. This will likely be the end of Cooper's season, who slashed .261/.337/.415 with nine home runs and 50 RBI in 469 plate appearances. The 31-year-old has played well when healthy but has endured numerous injuries over the past several seasons.
The Miami Marlins reinstated first baseman/outfielder Garrett Cooper (concussion) from the seven-day concussion injured list on Friday and designated first baseman Jesus Aguilar for assignment in a corresponding move. Cooper is back at first base and is hitting fifth on Friday against Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Tyler Anderson. The 31-year-old should be a regular for Miami down the stretch, and he'll return to a .269/.345/.415 line with seven home runs, 42 RBI and 28 runs scored in his 323 at-bats this year. Aguilar has mostly played every day for the Fish in 2022 and was hitting .236/.286/.388 with 15 long balls, 49 RBI, 37 runs scored and a stolen base in 415 at-bats. The 32-year-old right-handed slugger will be hoping to latch on with a contender before the end of the year.
Miami Marlins first baseman/outfielder Garrett Cooper (concussion) started a minor league rehab assignment with Single-A Jupiter on Tuesday. Manager Don Mattingly said the plan is for Cooper to play three days in a row before being evaluated. Mattingly doesn't think Cooper will need much more time than that, as he has recovered from his concussion symptoms quickly. The 31-year-old could be back in Miami's lineup by early next week, barring any setbacks. The first-time All-Star should return to a regular role in Miami once he's ready after hitting .269/.345/.415 with seven home runs, 42 RBI and 28 runs scored in 368 plate appearances over 94 games with the Fish before suffering a head injury last week.
