Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Gerson Bautista has suffered a flexor mass strain in his right elbow. Manager Scott Servais said that Bautista won't need surgery but the strain is likely forcing him to start the 2020 season on the injured list. Though Bautista showed some promise with an above average strikeout rate in the minors, he likely wasn't going to be in the mix for saves in 2020 with Yoshihisa Hirano projected as Seattle's closer and Matt Magill and Carl Edwards Jr. in line for chances as well. You can feel comfortable leaving Bautista off of your draft board.
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Gerson Bautista hit 101 mph with a fastball during an intrasquad game on Saturday, but his next pitch came out at 94 mph and he threw one more pitch before something looked wrong. Athletic trainer Rob Nodine came to the mound to check with Bautista before they both walked off moments later. The 25-year-old appeared to be favoring his right arm when he left. Bautista made just eight appearances (two starts) for the M's in 2019, allowing 11 earned runs and walking nine in nine innings. He allowed six earned runs in 4 1/3 innings in five outings with the Mets in 2018 and was just hoping to make the team this year. By the looks of it, Bautista won't be ready by July 24. Stay tuned for updates.
Seattle Mariners pitcher Gerson Bautista will serve as the opener for Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Twins. He was activated from the injured list recently and has only pitched in two games for Seattle this season. Tommy Milone will follow Bautista and pitch a bulk of the innings. This is a situation to avoid against the hot Twins offense.
Seattle Mariners prospect pitcher Gerson Bautista (shoulder) suffered an apparent right shoulder injury in his Cactus League spring appearance against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Bautista delivered a pitch, and immediately crumpled to the ground in a crouch, shaking off his glove and grabbing the area around his arm pit with his non-pitching arm. It's uncertain how long he'll be sidelined, but one of the pieces of the Robinson Cano trade with the New York Mets might be out a while if the pain on his face is any indication of the severity of his injury.
Mets Demote Luis Guillorme, Promote Gerson Bautista
The New York Mets made a few transactions on Tuesday, sending down infielder Luis Guillorme to Triple-A Las Vegas and calling up reliever Gerson Bautista in a corresponding transaction. Guillorme heads back down after being a particularly large reason for the Mets latest loss, committing two errors that led to runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday in the 6-4 loss. Bautista, meanwhile, will begin his second stint in Queens this season after allowing six earned runs across 4 1/3 innings pitched the first time around. He is a hard thrower, so there could be some fantasy appeal down the line, but we are very far from approaching that just yet.
In a corresponding move with the activation of reliever Anthony Swarzak, the New York Mets have optioned reliever Gerson Bautista to Triple-A Las Vegas. Making his Major League debut this season, Bautista certainly did not endear himself to the organizations in his short stint. Across 4 1/3 innings pitched, the right-hander allowed six earned runs on eight hits and five walks with only three strikeouts. He wasnt much better in the minor leagues prior to his call-up, as Bautista had a 4.82 ERA across 9 1/3 innings pitched with Double-A Binghamton and a 6.97 ERA in 10 1/3 innings pitched for Triple-A Las Vegas. Bautista isnt worth any sort of fantasy consideration in any league.
The New York Mets have called up right-handed reliever Gerson Bautista from Double-A Binghamton, demoting reliever Hansel Robles to Triple-A Las Vegas to make room. The Mets bullpen has been gassed, as evidenced by their disastrous showing against the Washington Nationals on Monday night. Now, at least for the time being, they'll have a fresh arm to help out. Bautista was acquired from the Boston Red Sox last summer in the Addison Reed deal, and was thought of as a potential high-end bullpen arm down the line. But with an 11:0 K:BB ratio over his first 11 innings this season, the Mets evidently think hes ready to contribute now. Theres no fantasy value here, but Bautista could have the stuff to be a closer one day.
