The Baltimore Orioles claimed pitcher Hector Velazquez off of waivers on Sunday, per MASNSports.com's Roch Kubatko. The 31-year-old was designated for assignment on Thursday after posting a 5.63 ERA in 56 1/3 innings pitched for the Red Sox in 2019. Per Kubatko, the O's view Velazquez more of a long reliever than as a starter. Regardless of his role with the team, Velazquez's 17% career strikeout rate offers little fantasy value.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Hector Velazquez finished just 2 1/3 innings after allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out one and walking two against the Blue Jays on Thursday. It was Velazquez's first start since May 18 but he didn't take advantage of the opportunity. The righty threw just 28 strikes in 50 pitches, so it's clear why he wasn't effective. Splitting the year as a starter and reliever, he's 1-3 with a 5.65 ERA in 43 innings pitched. It's to be seen if Velazquez will get another chance to start, but the Red Sox are struggling to fill their fifth rotation spot. The All-Star break is coming up so we'll have to see which route the Red Sox go, but even if the 30-year-old does get more starts, he'd be far from a viable fantasy option.
The Boston Red Sox have placed relief pitcher Hector Velazquez (back) on the 10-day injured list with a lower-back strain. The right-hander was struggling so far this season out of the 'pen, compiling a 5.97 ERA and 1.44 WHIP through 18 appearances, seven of which were starts. This injury could be the reason for his early season struggles, as he has shown he can handle pitching in the big leagues before. Mike Shawaryn has been called up to take his spot in the bullpen. Neither player has any fantasy value.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Hector Velazquez threw five innings, allowing two runs, on just two hits, while fanning three, and walking two in an 11-2 win over Seattle Sunday. It was a spot start for Velazquez and he did his job. It helped that Sox offense churned out four runs through his first two innings, allowing the 30-year-old to work efficiently through the outing. He's started six games this year, but Sunday's five innings was his longest start of the season. Velazquez could have one more chance to start before David Price returns to the rotation, but he isn't fantasy relevant due to his low strikeout totals and lack of depth in his starts.
Hector Velazquez To Start Tuesday, Stay In Rotation
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Hector Velazquez will start Game 2 against the Tigers on Tuesday and will stick in the rotation for a couple of turns with Nathan Eovaldi on the injured list. The 30-year-old right-hander is 0-1 this year with a 2.84 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 10 K's in 12 2/3 innings over his six outings (two starts). He's been solid in his swing role with Boston the last three years and is one to grab in deep mixed and AL-only leagues in the short term while he's in the rotation. He'll also be a nice streaming sleeper for Game 2 of the doubleheader against Detroit on Tuesday.
Colten Brewer, Hector Velazquez Round Out Red Sox Bullpen
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed on Saturday that relief pitchers Colten Brewer and Hector Velazquez will make the Opening Day roster as members of the Sox's bullpen. The 25-year-old Brewer was acquired from the Padres in November and threw 10 innings this spring, scattering nine hits, allowing four earned runs, while fanning 10 and walking six. Velasquez will stick around as the long-reliever and spot-starter, after starting in four Grapefruit League contests. They'll join Matt Barnes, Ryan Brasier, Heath Hembree, Brian Johnson, Tyler Thornburg, and Brandon Workman to complete the eight-man pen. The team has been very hesitant to name a closer as the season draws near but Barnes' name has been thrown around as the man expected to get first crack.
Boston Red Sox starter Hector Velazquez is likely to start on Sunday against the Indians. Velazquez has been pretty good this year with a 3.19 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 49 strikeouts in 79 innings over 43 outings (seven starts). However, he hasn't been as effective as a starter (4.00 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, 6.7 K/9) as a reliever (2.77 ERA, 1.34 WHIP). He won't be an attractive streamer on Sunday.
Boston Red Sox pitcher Hector Velazquez (illness) has been scratched from his start on Friday due to illness. William Cuevas will instead make the start against the Mets in what is likely to be a bullpen game now. Cuevas has made just four appearances in the big leagues this year (7 1/3 innings) and all have come in relief. He won't be long for this game and should be avoided in fantasy leagues.
Boston Red Sox starter Hector Velazquez went four innings, allowing two runs on five hits in Wednesday's 9-8 win over the Atlanta Braves. Velazquez walked three batters while striking out two and was saddled with a no-decision. The 29-year-old has been decent in limited starts this season. He has a 7-2 record with a 3.30 ERA and 1.51 WHIP through 76 1/3 innings. Realistically, he has no remaining fantasy value as he should move back into the bullpen for the rest of the season.
Boston Red Sox pitcher Hector Velazquez will start on Wednesday against the Braves. Velazquez hasn't been bad this year, going 7-2 with a 3.24 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 46 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings over 39 outings (six starts), but he hasn't started since Aug. 24 and will be facing a tough Braves lineup. The right-hander isn't recommended as a fantasy streamer for this one.
