Henderson Alvarez Fantasy Stats

Free-agent starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez will throw for scouts Tuesday in Venezuela, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. Alvarez made three starts with the Phillies in 2017, posting a 4.30 ERA in 14 2/3 innings and had not pitched in the majors since 2016 before his starts in September. Once a touted prospect that had a 2.65 ERA in 187 innings in 2014 for the Marlins, Alvarez had shoulder surgery that he has yet to really recover from.

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Daniel Nava was placed on the 60-day disabled list Wednesday with a back strain, ending his season. In a corresponding move, starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez had his contract selected from the minors. Nava hit well (.301, four homers, 21 RBI) in limited time for the Phils this year, but injuries kept setting him back. Alvarez is penciled in to start Sunday against the A's. The right-hander had intriguing upside back with Oakland, but he's much too risky considering this will be his first start in a major league game since May of 2015.

Former All-Star pitcher Henderson Alvarez has signed a minor league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies as he attempts a return to the major leagues. The 27-year-old spent his first five professional seasons split between the Toronto Blue Jays and Miami Marlins. In 2014 he went 12-7 with a 2.65 ERA, earning an All-Star nod. Last September, Alvarez underwent shoulder surgery and had most recently pitched in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Should he pitch well in the minor leagues, he should be expected to debut with the Phillies at some point this season as the club faces a litany of injuries.
