Daniel Nava News

Pirates to Release Daniel Nava

The Pittsburgh Pirates released outfielder Daniel Nava on Tuesday. The 35-year-old was signed to a minor league deal in January and was expected to compete for the team's left field job. However, the Pirates traded for Corey Dickerson and Nava suffered a back injury in spring training that ultimately required surgery on Feb. 27. With the recovery expected to keep him out 10 to 12 weeks, the club opted to release him, though the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Liz Bloom noted the Pirates may re-sign Nava later. Nava is well off the fantasy radar at this point.

Daniel Nava Out 10-12 Weeks After Surgery

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Daniel Nava (back) underwent back surgery on Tuesday and will be out 10 to 12 weeks, according to head trainer Todd Tomczyk. It's a tough blow for the 35-year-old Nava, as he was hoping to make the team out of camp as a platoon partner in left field. That was looking less likely after the team signed outfielder Corey Dickerson, too. Nava could make a part-time impact with Pittsburgh later in the year, but he shouldn't be drafted at all.

Pirates Hope Daniel Nava Will Return Soon

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Daniel Nava (back) has not participated in the team's last two workouts and is "rehab-only," according to director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk. General manager Neal Huntington said the team is hopeful Nava will return quickly, but outfielders Bryce Brentz and Michael Saunders are backup plans in case Nava isn't ready. Nava had good numbers in limited playing time with the Phillies, but he also dealt with back problems last year, too. He has good splits against right-handed hitters, and he could become part of a platoon in left for the Bucs in 2018.

Daniel Nava Held Out Of Workouts

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Daniel Nava (back) was held out of Tuesday's workouts due to lower back discomfort. Nava also dealt with back problems last year, so the team will play it cautious early in camp. The veteran outfielder hit well with the Phillies last year (.301/.393/.421), but he was fortunate with a .357 BABIP. He has value to the Pirates as a fourth or fifth outfielder and could see starts in left field against right-handed pitchers. Nava's fantasy value is minimal without guaranteed at-bats.

Daniel Nava Lands On DL Again, Henderson Alvarez Called Up

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Daniel Nava was placed on the 60-day disabled list Wednesday with a back strain, ending his season. In a corresponding move, starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez had his contract selected from the minors. Nava hit well (.301, four homers, 21 RBI) in limited time for the Phils this year, but injuries kept setting him back. Alvarez is penciled in to start Sunday against the A's. The right-hander had intriguing upside back with Oakland, but he's much too risky considering this will be his first start in a major league game since May of 2015.

Daniel Nava Activated From DL

Veteran outfielder Daniel Nava was activated by the Philadelphia Phillies today following a stint on the disabled list with a lower back strain. The 34-year-old is hitting .298 with four home runs and 20 RBI, managing to play well when healthy, but struggling to do that. The most recent disabled list stint was his third of the season, as he's managed to play in just 72 games thus far. Nava was subject to rumors of a possible waiver trade this month, but his inability to put enough games together without injury has been an issue.

Daniel Nava Lands Back On Disabled List

For the third time this season, the Philadelphia Phillies have placed outfielder Daniel Nava on the disabled list. While his first two stints were due to a left hamstring strain, this time the 34-year-old went down with a lower back strain. Nava has been subject to rumors of a possible waiver trade this month, but this injury effectively ends those discussions. In his first year with the Phillies, Nava has played well when healthy, hitting .298 with four home runs and 20 RBI in 72 games played. Of course, he hasn't been able to get any sustained success as he's only managed to play in two full months out of five.

Daniel Nava Picks Up Hit In First Game Off DL

Despite the passing of the trade deadline on Monday, August brings plenty of possible switches through waiver trades. One candidate for this kind of transaction on the Philadelphia Phillies it outfielder Daniel Nava, who was activated off the disabled list yesterday. The 34-year-old was placed on the DL late last month with a left hamstring strain. Following the departure of Howie Kendrick, Nava figures to see plenty of playing time, making him an interesting outfield option for teams in the postseason hunt. Tonight, he returned and started in right field, batting seventh in the lineup. He managed one hit in three plate appearances and is currently hitting .303 with three home runs and 17 RBI in 66 games.

Daniel Nava Picks Up Two Hits In Defeat

Outfielder Daniel Nava led the way for the Philadelphia Phillies defense tonight in what would ultimately be a losing effort. The 34-year-old scored a run and picked up three hits, drawing a walk and striking out once as well. Nava was batting leadoff and starting in left field as he continues to see consistent starts in the wake of Howie Kendrick's absence. The California native has had a promising start to this month, picking up eight hits in five games.

Daniel Nava Drives In Lone Run From Leadoff Spot

In a 6-0 hole right away, the Philadelphia Phillies, who have the second-fewest runs in the major leagues were unlikely to scratch out a comeback victory. The club would only managed five hits altogether, two of which came from leadoff man Daniel Nava. The 34-year-old journeyman was starting in left field and managed to drive in his team's only run in the fifth inning with an RBI single. Nava is hitting .286 on the season with three home runs and 11 RBI. With Howie Kendrick still unable to return from a hamstring injury suffered last week, expect to see more of Nava in the starting lineup,
