Hunter Bigge Moved to 60-Day Injured List

The Tampa Bay Rays transferred right-hander Hunter Bigge (face, lat) to the 60-day injured list on Thursday and selected the contract of right-hander Joey Gerber to the 40-man roster and optioned him to Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move, according to Bally Sports' Ryan Bass. Bigge has been on the sideline since early May due to a strained right lat, but then he was hit in the face by a line drive in the dugout, causing him to miss even more time. The 27-year-old hurler has resumed baseball activities but won't be able to return until late August or early September. Before his injury earlier this year, Bigge held a 2.40 ERA (6.15 FIP) and 1.07 WHIP with 12 strikeouts and five walks in 15 innings out of the bullpen for Tampa.

Hunter Bigge Released from Hospital

Tampa Bay Rays reliever Hunter Bigge (face) was released from the hospital and is "doing well," per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Bigge suffered a frightening injury in the dugout Thursday when a 105.1 mph line drive hit by Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman struck him in the face. Bigge was taken off the field on a stretcher. The 27-year-old gave a thumbs-up on his way out, but he had to undergo surgery on multiple facial fractures. Fortunately, he's now doing much better.

Hunter Bigge is Undergoing Further Testing

Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Hunter Bigge (face) was struck in the face by a ball in the dugout and was hospitalized and is undergoing testing, the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin reports. The news couldn't be more unfortunate for Bigge, as Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman hit a line drive into the Rays' dugout and hit him. It just so happened that Bigge was standing in the wrong place at the wrong time, and as a result, he was taken off the field on a stretcher. Most importantly, as he was leaving, he gave the stadium a thumbs up, showing that he was conscious and in good spirits. Reports have mentioned that Bigge was awake and talking to doctors in the hospital, and he never lost consciousness. More details will likely become available later on Friday or Saturday.

Hunter Bigge Placed On Injured List With Lat Strain

The Tampa Bay Rays placed right-handed reliever Hunter Bigge (lat) on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday with a right-lat strain and recalled right-hander Cole Sulser up from Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move, according to the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin. Bigge will now be away from the team for at least a few weeks as he recovers from his injury. The 26-year-old had not pitched since last Thursday and has allowed four earned runs on 11 hits (four homers) while walking five and striking out 12 in 15 innings over 13 appearances out of Tampa's bullpen. Bigge will be eligible to return from the IL on May 18, but given the type of injury he's dealing with, we wouldn't be surprised if we don't see him again in the big leagues until later in the month.

Hunter Bigge To Make Opening Day Roster

Tampa Bay Rays right-handed reliever Hunter Bigge, who was originally optioned to Triple-A Durham, will now be on the Opening Day roster with left-hander Shane McClanahan (triceps) starting the year on the 15-day injured list. Bigge, who could be in play for save chances at some point this year, is a hard-throwing 26-year-old who made his big-league debut in 2024 when he appeared in 19 games (one start) with the Rays and Chicago Cubs. He posted a 2.60 ERA (2.76 FIP), a 1.27 WHIP, his first career save, 24 strikeouts and only five walks in 17 1/3 innings pitched. Bigge was much more dominant at Triple-A, recording a 2.25 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, eight saves, 36 strikeouts and nine walks in 20 innings. His fastball-slider combination produces plenty of swings and misses, potentially making him an under-the-radar option in holds leagues.

Hunter Bigge To Start The Year In The Minors

Bally Sports' Ryan Bass reports that the Tampa Bay Rays optioned right-handed relievers Hunter Bigg and Eric Orze to Triple-A Durham on Friday, even with Alex Faedo (shoulder) opening the year on the injured list. Both Bigge and Orze have experience pitching multiple innings in relief in the minors. Right-hander Nathan Wiles was also traded to the Atlanta Braves for cash considerations. Bigge, 26, gave up only two runs in seven Grapefruit League innings while striking out six and walking only one. Orze, 27, was even better in spring training with 10 strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings while showcasing a nasty splitter. Both pitchers should eventually be up in Tampa's big-league bullpen at some point in 2025. The hard-throwing Bigge had a save and two holds in 19 appearances with the Cubs and Rays last year and could be a deep sleeper for saves for the Rays later in the season.

Hunter Bigge Optioned To Triple-A

Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Hunter Bigge is being optioned to Triple-A Iowa, according to Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic. Bigge made only three major league appearances in his brief first stint at the major league level. He logged two innings with a 3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and a 2:3 BB:K ratio. At Triple-A this season, Bigge performed quite well with a 0.77 ERA, 0.69 WHIP, and a 6:19 BB:K ratio across 11 frames. He also tallied six saves. The 26-year-old is a strong candidate to return to the major leagues later this season and could eventually earn a high-leverage role as he gains more experience.

Cubs Calling Up Hunter Bigge From Triple-A Iowa

The Chicago Cubs are expected to call up relief prospect Hunter Bigge from Triple-A Iowa. No corresponding move has been announced yet. Bigge has been fantastic out of the bullpen for Iowa, posting a 0.77 ERA and 19 strikeouts over 11 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old is also a perfect 6-for-6 in save opportunities. With current closer Hector Neris hitting a rough patch with a 6.52 ERA in June and all the injuries to Chicago's bullpen with Julian Merryweather (ribs), Mark Leiter Jr. (forearm), and Adbert Alzolay (forearm) sidelined, Bigge could be in play for some save chances. Fantasy managers in NL-Only Leagues and deep-league formats can add Bigge for bullpen help.
