Ian Gibaut Begins Rehab Assignment

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Ian Gibaut (calf, forearm) started a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Sunday and gave up a home run in his lone inning of work. It's good to see Gibaut pitching in games again, but because of the fact that he's missed the entire 2024 season, it's unlikely that we'll see him down the stretch pitching out of the Reds' bullpen with the season winding down. The 30-year-old reliever has been rehabbing a right-calf strain and a right-forearm strain all season long. The former 11th-round selection of the Tampa Bay Rays in 2015 out of Tulane was solid for the Reds last year, going 8-4 with a 3.33 ERA (4.07 FIP), a 1.28 WHIP, a career-high three saves, a career-high 69 strikeouts and 28 walks in 75 2/3 innings out of the bullpen.

Nick Martini, Ian Gibaut To Start Rehab Assignments Soon

Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell said that both outfielder Nick Martini (thumb) and reliever Ian Gibaut (calf, forearm) have minor-league rehab assignments scheduled. Martini is hoping to start his rehab assignment on Sept. 17 with Triple-A Louisville as he recovers from thumb surgery on his left thumb that he had in early July. With only a few weeks left in the 2024 regular season, though, it wouldn't be a surprise if we didn't see either Martini or Gibaut back for the Reds before the end of September. Gibaut, meanwhile, is scheduled to start his rehab assignment on Sept. 15 with Louisville. The 30-year-old veteran hasn't pitched at all in 2024 after having forearm surgery, and he recently had a setback when he suffered a calf strain. Because of all the time he's missed this year, Gibaut is going to need at least several outings in the minors leagues. Fantasy managers can ignore both.

Ian Gibaut To Throw First Bullpen On July 16

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Ian Gibaut (forearm) will throw his first bullpen session on Tuesday, July 16, and could be back with the team in the middle of August. Gibaut hasn't pitched at all this year and had anterior interosseous nerve-release surgery back in early May. It's good news that the 30-year-old reliever is getting close to throwing off a mound again, but he still has a lot of boxes to check and will eventually need to embark on a minor-league rehab assignment until he rejoins the major-league bullpen. Gibaut could help Cincy's bullpen down the stretch, though, after he went 8-4 with a 3.33 ERA (4.07 FIP), a 1.28 WHIP, a career-high three saves, a career-high 69 strikeouts and 28 walks in 75 2/3 innings of relief.

Ian Gibaut Working On Grip Strength

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Ian Gibaut (forearm) has been working on his grip strength with his right hand. Once he reaches a certain level of progress, he will be cleared to begin a throwing program. Gibaut had surgery on May 9 to relieve a compression in a forearm nerve called the anterior interosseous nerve or AIN. Manager David Bell said that the 30-year-old could be cleared to return from the 60-day injured list in as soon as six weeks. He's been shut down all year to this point and will not be able to rejoin Cincy's bullpen until the second half of the season. The former 11th-round pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2015 out of Tulane went 8-4 with a 3.33 ERA (4.07 FIP), a 1.28 WHIP, a career-high three saves, a career-high 69 strikeouts and 28 walks in 74 relief appearances in his first full season with the Reds in 2023.

Ian Gibaut Undergoes Surgery On His Right Arm

Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Ian Gibaut (arm) had anterior interosseous nerve-release surgery on his right arm on Thursday, but manager David Bell said the hope is that he's still able to return this season. Gibaut had been dealing with right-arm issues since late February and will now be out even longer. The 30-year-old is currently on the 60-day injured list and won't be able to rejoin Cincinnati's bullpen until some point in the second half of the season. The former 11th-round pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2015 out of Tulane was a key part of the Reds' bullpen last year, going 8-4 with a 3.33 ERA (4.07 FIP) and 1.28 WHIP with a career-high three saves, 28 walks and a career-high 69 strikeouts in 75 2/3 innings over 74 relief appearances.

Ian Gibaut Moved To 60-Day Injured List

In a flurry of roster moves by the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday, right-hander Ian Gibaut (forearm) was transferred to the 60-day injured list. The Reds also optioned infielder/outfielder Nick Martini and outfielder Bubba Thompson to Triple-A Louisville and Double-A Chattanooga, respectively, and selected the contract of outfielder Conner Capel from Louisville. Gibaut is dealing with a lingering strained right forearm after he was initially shut down from throwing in late April. The 30-year-old now won't be eligible to come off the IL until late May, and even that seems optimistic with the way his recovery has gone this year. Gibaut was a key pitcher for the Reds in 2023, going 8-4 with a 3.33 ERA, a 1.28 WHIP, three saves and a career-high 69 strikeouts in 75 2/3 frames in 74 relief appearances.

Ian Gibaut Has Renewed Forearm Discomfort

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Ian Gibaut (forearm), who was nearing a return from the 15-day injured list, is dealing with renewed forearm discomfort and has had his timeline to return pushed back. Gibaut will now take a little break before trying to resume a minor-league rehab assignment. The 30-year-old reliever has no timetable to return and could be looking at surgery, which would almost certainly end his 2024 season, if he can't get past the forearm pain. The former 11th-round pick of the Tampa Bay Rays in 2015 out of Tulane had a nice 3.33 ERA (4.07 FIP), a 1.28 WHIP, a career-high three saves, 28 walks and a career-high 69 strikeouts in 75 2/3 innings over 74 relief outings for the Reds in 2023 as a trusted high-leverage reliever out of the bullpen.

Ian Gibaut Could Miss Opening Day

Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Ian Gibaut (forearm) appears to be in danger of missing Opening Day. Reds' manager David Bell recently mentioned that Gibaut has yet to resume throwing after being shut down last week. The 30-year-old is still recovering from a forearm issue and is considered "close" for Opening Day. The right-hander was a viable option out of the bullpen for the Reds last season. He could see a few save chances, but Alexis Diaz is the primary closer in Cincinnati.

Ian Gibaut To Rest A Few Days

Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Ian Gibaut will be shut down from throwing for 3-5 days because of a pronator strain. Manager David Bell stated it is "nothing serious." If that is the case for Gibaut, he shouldn't fall behind in the spring. The 30-year-old is a decent play in save+hold leagues after making 74 appearances in 2023, racking up 23 holds and three saves. He had a 3.33 ERA but a 1.28 WHIP, striking out 69 over 75 2/3 innings. Gibaut was used in a few save situations late in 2023 while the Reds were looking to clinch a playoff spot. That came about, however, cause regular closer Alexis Diaz was used in critical situations earlier in games. Gibaut was tied for second on the team in saves with Lucas Sims and Buck Farmer. He may be able to pluck a few more saves in 2024, but be weary of his 4.07 FIP.

Ian Gibaut Collects Third Save, Alexis Diaz Used In Eighth

Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Ian Gibaut recorded a rare save on Sunday, shutting the door on the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 4-2 victory. Gibaut pitched a clean ninth inning, allowing no baserunners and striking out none. It is noteworthy that usual closer Alexis Diaz was used in the eighth inning of this one, something the Reds don't typically do. With their postseason chances hanging on the line, though, they went with what they thought would give them the best chance of winning. This sets up a potentially frustrating final week for Diaz owners, who may see the 26-year-old appear in more non-save situations if the Reds' feel it is necessary.
