The Miami Marlins and Los Angeles Angels have agreed to a trade that will send relief pitcher James Hoyt to the Angels in exchange for cash considerations. Hoyt was great for the Marlins in 2020, posting a 1.23 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings. Underlying metrics show that regression could be coming, and that combined with Hoyt's spring struggles meant he was not going to make the team for Opening Day. Rather than sending the 34-year-old to the minors, the Marlins sent him west, where he'll likely pitch in middle relief for a much-improved Angels bullpen.
James Hoyt Becomes Latest Reliever Traded To Miami
The Miami Marlins bullpen overhaul continued Saturday as they acquired right-handed pitcher James Hoyt from the Cleveland Indians. Hoyt had been designated for assignment earlier in the week after having appeared in eight games last season for Cleveland, allowing two runs and striking out 10 in 8 innings. Miami has had to reconstruct its roster in the wake of the 18 positive COVID-19 results that the organization reported. Since then, the team has been sidelined for what will be over a week. With Richard Bleier also having been brought over to replenish the bullpen ranks, there is very little insight into how the team will deploy its arms once they return to the field.
The Cleveland Indians have acquired relief pitcher James Hoyt from the Houston Astros for minor leaguer Tommy DeJuneas. Hoyt holds a career 4.40 ERA over 66 games. He has appeared in just one game in 2018, throwing 1/3 scoreless innings. The Indians are desperate for bullpen help, so perhaps Hoyt could be a factor somewhere down the line. For now, he holds no fantasy value and should be left on the waiver wire.
