James Kaprielian News
The Oakland Athletics outrighted right-hander James Kaprielian (shoulder), left-hander Sam Long and catcher Carlos Perez to Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday. Kaprielian cleared waivers after he was on the 60-day injured list this year following surgery to fix the posterior labrum in his right shoulder in August. It remains to be seen if the 29-year-old will be ready to go for the start of spring training in 2024. In 14 outings (11 starts) before his injury in 2023, Kaprielian went 2-6 with a rough 6.34 ERA (5.08 FIP), 1.59 WHIP, 31 walks and 57 strikeouts in 61 innings pitched in his fourth big-league season with the A's. He has a career 4.61 ERA (4.67 FIP), 1.35 WHIP and 282 K's in 66 outings (58 starts) in his four seasons in the majors.

James Kaprielian Undergoes Season-Ending Surgery
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian (shoulder) underwent successful right shoulder surgery on Wednesday. The right-hander is done for the season and is likely to miss time in 2024 as well. He was rehabbing his shoulder injury, but has decided to undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair a labrum injury. Before that, Kaprielian held a rough 6.34 ERA. 1.59 WHIP and 57/31 K/BB ratio through 11 starts with the A's. The expectation is that he'll be back in early 2024.

James Kaprielian Throws Bullpen Saturday
Oakland Athletics right-hander James Kaprielian (shoulder) threw a 35-pitch bullpen session on Saturday, but there currently is no timetable for his return from a strained right shoulder. Right-hander Mason Miller (elbow) was also scheduled to throw all fastballs on Saturday after progressing from playing long toss to throwing off flat ground. The next step for both Kaprielian and Miller is to face live hitters before potentially going on minor-league rehab assignments. Miller is attempting to return from a UCL sprain he suffered in early May. When healthy, both Kaprielian and Miller should return to starting-rotation spots with the last-place A's, but that's probably not going to come until early August.

Mason Miller, James Kaprielian To Throw Saturday
Oakland Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said that right-handers Mason Miller (elbow) and James Kaprielian (shoulder) will both throw off flat ground on Saturday. Miller, a 24-year-old rookie, is trying to return from a sprained UCL that put him on the injured list in May. Before the injury, he had impressed in his first four big-league starts, allowing eight earned runs on 14 hits while walking seven and striking out 22 in 21 1/3 innings. He will be a rotation option for the A's and fantasy managers in the second half. Kaprielian is dealing with a right-shoulder strain and received a cortisone injection earlier this month. There is no timetable for either pitcher's return to Oakland. Kaprielian has a rough 6.34 ERA (5.10 FIP), 1.59 WHIP, 31 walks and 57 K's in 14 outings (11 starts) over 61 innings in 2023.

James Kaprielian Makes Spring Debut
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian (shoulder) took the mound for the first time this spring on Sunday against the San Diego Padres. The right-hander struck out five batters over one 2/3 innings of work. However, he also walked three batters and allowed one hit as well. Kaprielian looked good as his fastball got up to 97 mph during this outing. The hope is that he feels good after this game and can continue on schedule for the rest of the spring. It sounds like Kaprielian should be able to be part of the Opening Day roster. Kaprielian has the potential to be a consistent option, but is more of a deep league target in fantasy leagues right now.

James Kaprielian Throws On Thursday
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian (shoulder) threw a two-inning simulated game on Thursday. This is the second time that Kaprielian has faced live hitters this spring. He threw 30 pitches in this one and mentioned he is hopeful to be ready in time for Opening Day. The 29-year-old is coming off surgery to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder. Kaprielian is hopeful to make his Cactus League debut sometime this next week. Kaprielian showed some nice flashes last season, but is more of a deep league option.

James Kaprielian To Face Live Hitters On Sunday
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian (shoulder) is scheduled to face live hitters on Sunday. The right-hander is set to throw a 20-pitch live batting practice session as he works his way back from offseason surgery. Manager Mark Kotsay mentioned Kaprielian will throw at least one more batting practice session before getting into spring training action. The 28-year-old underwent surgery to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder during the offseason. He should be able to get fully healthy in time for Opening Day. Kaprielian is more of a deep league option, but possibly he improves in 2023.

James Kaprielian, Paul Blackburn Expected To Be Ready
The Oakland Athletics expect starting pitchers James Kaprielian (shoulder) and Paul Blackburn (finger) to be ready for spring training, according to general manager David Forst. It's the reason the team felt comfortable trading left-hander Cole Irvin to the Baltimore Orioles this week. Kaprielian had surgery to fix the AC joint in his right-shoulder in the offseason. The 28-year-old figures to be a fixture in the A's rotation after posting a 4.23 ERA (4.63 FIP), 1.34 WHIP and 17 percent strikeout rate in a career-high 26 starts in his third MLB season in 2022. Blackburn was excellent for Oakland before a finger caused him to be shut down in July. The 29-year-old was an All-Star last for the first time last year and went 7-6 with a 4.28 ERA (4.21 FIP), 1.26 WHIP and career-high 19.1 percent strikeout rate in a career-high 21 starts in his sixth season in Oakland.

James Kaprielian Scratched From Start Friday
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian (finger) has been scratched from his start Friday against the Los Angeles Angels with a middle right finger laceration. Kaprielian was set to make his return to the Athletics rotation after getting bumped out of it last week, but won't make his start after cutting a finger on his pitching hand. It is not yet known if the Athletics plan to start him later in the weekend or if he will be skipped. The 28-year-old had a tough go of it in August, posting a 1-4 record, 5.59 ERA, and 1.79 WHIP over 29 IP. Still, he could have been a somewhat appealing streaming candidate in deeper leagues against a bad Angels lineup. Alas, the Athletics will instead have a bullpen game on Friday, with Austin Pruitt opening.

James Kaprielian Loses Ninth Game
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian was hit with his ninth loss of the season in Wednesday's 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Washington Nationals. Kaprielian allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out three in 5 2/3 innings of work. It was the 28-year-old's fourth straight losing decision, and he'll be happy to flip the calendar to September, as he finished the month of August with a 5.59 ERA, 1.79 WHIP, 23 strikeouts and 17 walks in 29 innings over his six starts. In 22 starts in 2022, the right-hander has a 3-9 record, 4.79 ERA (5.20 FIP), 1.42 WHIP, 76 strikeouts and 52 walks in 109 innings in his third major league season.
