Loney was signed this past week as a likely replacement for first baseman Freddie Freeman (wrist), who will remain on the disabled list for the next two months. General manager John Coppolella stated that the move was a contingency play in case they were unable to move for first baseman Matt Adams, who was acquired over the weekend. This is Loney's second failed stint of the year, as he played 16 games at the Tigers' Triple-A affiliate. The veteran first baseman remains a likely defensive replacement in the future, but the Braves will be moving forward with Adams as their primary option over the coming weeks.

The Braves made the move after placing star first baseman Freddie Freeman on the disabled list with a fractured wrist. Loney's time in the minors is expected to be short-lived with a promotion likely in the near future. Loney carries a career .284 average with 108 home runs through 11 seasons. He signed roughly a month ago with the Tigers. Appearing in 16 games at the Triple-A level, he slashed .229/.387/.250 before being released. He'll be a desperation corner infield option for those struggling for a warm body in NL-only leagues.
