The Baltimore Orioles have signed fre-agent infielder Jean Segura to a minor-league deal on Friday. This is a nice low-risk for the O's to see if the 34-year-old has anything left in the tank. Segura struggled with a .219/.277/.279 slash line with three home runs and 21 RBI with the Miami Marlins last season. Segura hasn't played at all this season, but the two-time All-Star does have a good track record. This looks to be nothing more than a depth move for the O's as they head towards the postseason.
The Cleveland Guardians acquired infielder Jean Segura and infield prospect Kahlil Watson from the Miami Marlins on Tuesday in exchange for first baseman Josh Bell, according to sources. Segura's stay in Cleveland didn't last long, though, as The Athletic's Zack Meisel reported the Guardians are releasing Segura. He's owed the rest of his salary this year, $8.5 million for next year and a $2 million buyout for 2025. The 33-year-old has declined rapidly and was hitting just .219/.277/.279 with three homers, 21 RBI, six steals and 25 runs scored in 301 at-bats with the Fish this year. Watson, on the other hand, is a 20-year-old shortstop that was ranked by MLB Pipeline as Miami's No. 11 prospect. He has plenty of tools as a middle infielder, but he has plenty of developing still to do and is hitting just .210 (43-for-205) with nine homers, 24 RBI, 14 steals and 28 runs scored in 60 games for the Florida Complex League and High-A Beloit.
Jazz Chisholm Jr., Jean Segura Come Off Injured List
The Miami Marlins reinstated outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. (toe) and infielder Jean Segura (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list on Monday and optioned infielders Garrett Hampson and Jacob Amaya to Triple-A Jacksonville in corresponding moves. The team also claimed right-hander Eli Villalobos off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates and assigned him to Double-A Pensacola. Chisholm has been out since mid-May due to turf toe that will require offseason surgery. Neither Chisholm nor Segura were producing much for fantasy managers before their injuries, but Chisholm has the much higher fantasy ceiling, as long he continues to run on the base paths. Chisholm will return to a .229/.291/.403 slash line with seven homers and 14 steals, while Segura returns to a weak .190/.259/.234 slash line with a homer and five stolen bases.
Miami Marlins third baseman Jean Segura (hamstring) participated in on-field running on Thursday, according to MLB.com. The veteran injured his hamstring last Wednesday before going on the shelf on Saturday. Segura is expected to return in early July, with the hope that it isn't a lingering issue. It's been an abysmal first year in Miami for the 33-year-old, who was slashing .190/.259/.234 with one home run, 16 runs, 11 RBI, and five stolen bases over 60 games. If he wasn't already, fantasy managers should drop Segura everywhere.
Miami Marlins infielder Jean Segura (hamstring) has been placed on the 10-day injured list. Segura initially hurt his hamstring during Wednesday's contest against the Mariners before missing Friday's opener against the Nationals. The 33-year-old has been an unmitigated disaster for the Marlins, after signing a two-year, $17 million with Miami in the offseason. He's slashing a paltry .190/.259/.234 with one home run, 11 RBI, and five stolen bases over 205 at-bats. Perhaps the time off will do him some good. Marlins top prospect Jacob Amaya has been recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move. He's a name to keep an eye on.
Miami Marlins infielder Jean Segura went 1-for-4 with an RBI and his third stolen base of the 2023 season in Thursday's 5-3 victory over the visiting Washington Nationals. Segura was the Marlins' leadoff man for the first time this year on Thursday, and he took advantage of it. Despite a weak .276 on-base percentage through 39 games in his first season in Miami, Segura has reached base safely now in his last six games. But overall he's been a fantasy disappointment, hitting .211 (28-for-133) with three doubles, a triple, no home runs, five RBI and 11 runs scored in 146 trips to the plate. The 33-year-old will need to continue getting on base to stick in the leadoff spot, but as long as he stays there, he'll have slightly more DFS appeal.
Miami Marlins third baseman Jean Segura is at the top of the lineup for Thursday's game against Trevor Williams and the Washington Nationals, according to MLB.com. It's the first time this season that the 33-year-old is leading off, but with Jazz Chisholm Jr. (toe) out long-term, he might get more chances in the one spot. However, it's been a very disappointing season for Segura, who's slashing .209/.277/.248 with no home runs, 11 runs, four RBI, and a pair of steals across 38 games. It's hard for fantasy managers to handle that kind of production, and the two-time All-Star is droppable in just about every league.
Miami Marlins infielder Jean Segura will make his sixth start of the season in Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Twins at third base, but for the second consecutive game, will bat seventh. The 33-year-old was expected to be a key fixture at the top of the batting order for Skip Schumaker's club, but after batting in the two-hole during the first two contests, he hasn't hit above sixth since. Segura's off to a poor start at the plate, batting .111 with one stolen base and no home runs, runs, or RBI and is striking out 36.8% of the time. There's no chance he'll make his way up the lineup if he fails to pick things up, but the Marlins may prefer having him near the bottom either way, limiting the veteran's chances for counting stats. Without a decent run total, Segura becomes an above-average contributor in stolen bases and average with limited pop.
The Miami Marlins plan to use newly signed infielder Jean Segura at third base next season, according to manager Skip Schumaker. The Marlins signed the 32-year-old veteran to a two-year, $17 million deal on Wednesday night. Segura played exclusively at second base for the Philadelphia Phillies last year and he can also play shortstop, but the Marlins plan on using him as their primary third baseman next year with Miguel Rojas at shortstop and Jazz Chisholm at the keystone. Segura is hard to strike out and makes a lot of contact, leading to a career average of .285, but he lacks prototypical pop (only 10 homers in 2022) for the third base position. He's a very good defender, but Segura's fantasy appeal takes a hit with the move to Miami.
The Miami Marlins and free-agent shortstop Jean Segura agreed to a two-year, $17 million deal on Wednesday. Segura will remain in the National League East after spending the last four seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, the last of which led to a World Series appearance in his first postseason experience. The 32-year-old veteran infielder makes plenty of contact but lacks any kind of power upside. He hit .277/.336/.387 with a .723 OPS, 10 home runs, 33 RBI, 45 runs scored and 13 stolen bases in 387 plate appearances and 98 regular season games for the Phils in 2022. With Jazz Chisholm cemented at the hot corner in Miami, expect Segura to move back to shortstop in 2023. The move to the Marlins will be a downgrade in both lineup and ballpark from a fantasy standpoint.
