Brewers Decline Options On Jedd Gyorko, Eric Sogard, Ben Gamel
The Milwaukee Brewers declined the 2021 options on infielders Jedd Gyorko and Eric Sogard and outfielder Ben Gamel on Friday. Gyorko and Sogard both had $4.5 million options, while Gamel remains under team control after the team declined his $2.55 million option. Gyorko hit .248 with nine home runs and 17 RBI in 43 games and 117 at-bats this year, and his .838 OPS was the highest on the team while playing mostly against left-handed pitchers. He eventually became the team's primary first baseman. Sogard hit just .209 with a homer, 10 RBI and a .560 OPS in 44 games. Gamel had a .237 average with three home runs, 10 RBI and a .718 OPS in 40 games. The trio aren't likely to be anything more than utility options going forward, limiting their fantasy value significantly.
When the Milwaukee Brewers designated Justin Smoak for assignment -- in order to bring Daniel Vogelbach aboard -- it seemed as if Jedd Gyorkos playing time might get squeezed. But general manager David Stearns made it apparent that wouldnt be the case, as he mentioned Gyorko as one of the names that he expects to see considerable time at first moving forward. Through 20 games this year, Gyorko has slugged five homers, en route to a .955 OPS. He remains primarily a season-long commodity in deep leagues, but he may also have DFS appeal depending on the matchup.
Milwaukee Brewers infielder Jedd Gyorko went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a second run scored in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Twins. The veteran wound up being the hero for Milwaukee after he lifted a Taylor Rogers fastball over the wall in center field in the eighth inning to complete the comeback from an early 4-1 deficit. Gyorko isn't seeing everyday at-bats but he's had fantasy value in deeper-mixed league formats, posting a .286/.348/.619 slash line with two homers and five RBI through 10 games.
The Milwaukee Brewers agreed to an undisclosed deal with infielder Jedd Gyorko on Friday, according to a source. Gyorko played in only 62 games last year with the Cardinals and Dodgers and hit an embarrassing .174/.248/.250 with two home runs and nine RBI. At this point in his career, Gyorko is more of a utility infielder with some pop in his lumber, so he's highly unlikely to provide much for fantasy owners, even in a hitter-friendly environment like Milwaukee. At best, Gyorko will hope to be a platoon bat at the hot corner now that the Brew Crew has moved on from Travis Shaw and Mike Moustakas.
The Los Angeles Dodgers declined infielder Jedd Gyorko's option for the 2020 season, making him a free agent. The 31-year-old had a miserable year in 2019, splitting time with the Dodgers and Cardinals. Gyorko dealt with injuries and hit .174/.248/.250 in a part-time role for both Los Angeles and St. Louis. He had only two home runs and nine RBI in 92 total at-bats. The veteran infielder could certainly bounce back in 2020, but he won't be guaranteed a starting spot wherever he lands. Gyorko will likely just be infield depth in single-universe leagues next year, depending on where he winds up.
Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Jedd Gyorko (wrist) has been activated from the 60-day injured list on Sunday. Gyorko hasn't played since June due to multiple nagging injuries, but appears fine now. He'll make his debut for the Dodgers after being acquired by the team at the trade deadline. Gyorko will bat fifth and play first base versus lefty Max Fried. He wasn't hitting well before the injury, so fantasy owners should continue to avoid him right now.
The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired infielder Jedd Gyorko (back) from the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, according to MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal. There's no word on the return for Gyorko. The 30-year-old is currently on the 60-day injured list with a lower back strain and has played in only 38 games in 2019. He's also hitting a putrid .196/.274/.304 and will strictly be a utility player for the Blue later in the year when he's back to full health. You can continue to leave Gyorko on the waiver wire in all leagues.
St. Louis Cardinals infielder Jedd Gyorko's (back, calf, wrist) wrist isn't responding well and he is still healing from a calf injury. The Cardinals are a month away from re-evaluating what his timeline looks like, and Gyorko won't disagree that it might be hard to see him returning before Sept. 1. It basically equates to a lost season for the veteran 30-year-old. Gyorko was also hitting just .196/.274/.304 with two homers, five runs, seven RBI and two steals in 56 at-bats before his injuries, so you can pretty much keep forgetting about him in fantasy for the rest of 2019.
St. Louis Cardinals infielder Jedd Gyorko (back, calf) will remain on the injured list after he felt his left calf tighten up while running the bases on Monday. He was scheduled to be activated from the injured list on Tuesday. Manager Mike Shildt said Gyorko will need to remain on the injured list for up to another week. Rangel Ravelo and Tommy Edman, one of whom will likely be sent back to the minors when Gyorko returns, will remain with the team for now. It's the second time that Gyorko has been bothered by a calf ailment, and he's been on the injured list four times in the last two years because of lower-body injuries. The 30-year-old is hitting just .196 on the year with two homers and seven RBI, so he should be left to the waiver wire in mixed leagues when he's back.
Jedd Gyorko Placed On Injured List, Tommy Edman Called Up
The St. Louis Cardinals placed infielder Jedd Gyorko (back) on the 10-day disabled list on Saturday with a lower back strain and recalled infield prospect Tommy Edman from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move. Pitcher Merandy Gonzalez was also designated for assignment. Gyorko had been working as a utility infielder this year for the Red Birds and was hitting an ugly .196 (11-for-56) with two home runs, seven RBI and 14 strikeouts. He wasn't of much use in any fantasy leagues. Edman, the team's No. 11 prospect per MLB Pipeline, is a switch-hitter that was slashing .305/.356/.513 with seven home runs, 29 RBI and nine steals in 49 games for Memphis. He'll serve as a utility infielder but might have some appeal in NL-only leagues for his speed.
