Jerry Blevins News
Left-handed reliever Jerry Blevins announced his retirement on Tuesday after 13 major league seasons, the majority of that time with the Oakland Athletics and New York Mets. The 37-year-old southpaw last pitched for the Atlanta Braves in 2019, and he had been working at the New York Mets alternate training site after not making the team out of spring training. Blevins was a 17th-round pick by the Chicago Cubs back in 2004 and made his major league debut with the A's in 2007. He had two of his best seasons with the Mets in 2016 and 2017. Blevins will finish his career with a 30-13 record, a 3.54 ERA and seven saves in 609 games.
The Oakland Athletics traded relief pitcher Jerry Blevins to the Atlanta Braves on Sunday for cash considerations or a player to be named later. It's a good sign that relief pitcher Lou Trivino (thumb), who has been on the 10-day injured list due to a right thumb injury, might be ready to return for the upcoming road series against the Boston Red Sox. Trivino was able to throw from a mound on Sunday. He was a solid part of Oakland's good bullpen in 2018, and he is a nice setup man in front of closer Blake Treinen, although Trivino's fantasy appeal is limited to the deepest of AL-only roto leagues using true middle relievers or specialty leagues rewarding holds.
The Oakland Athletics signed relief pitcher Jerry Blevins to a minor-league contract, and if he wins a job in the majors he'll be paid $1.5 million. Blevins made his major league debut with the A's back in 2007, and he appeared in 281 games in relief, posting a 13-6 record with a 3.30 ERA across 267 innings while striking out 239 batters with a WHIP of 1.213. He didn't fare as well in the National League over the past five seasons, especially last year with the New York Mets when he was 3-2 with a 4.85 ERA and 1.359 WHIP across 42 2/3 innings over 64 relief appearances. He'll only be worth a look in deeper AL-only fantasy leagues using true relievers if he even wins a spot in the Oakland 'pen.
