Jeter Downs News
The Boston Red Sox reportedly added infield prospect Jeter Downs to the team's 40-man roster on Friday, per The Athletic's Chad Jennings. Acquired in the Mookie Betts trade along with outfielder Alex Verdugo and catcher Connor Wong, Downs hit .190 with a .272 on-base percentage, 14 home runs and 18 stolen bases in 405 plate appearances for Boston's Triple-A affiliate during the 2021 season. The 23-year-old saw time at both shortstop and second base in the minors last season and is someone to keep an eye on in dynasty leagues.
Boston Red Sox shortstop prospect Jeter Downs showcased his massive potential in his spring debut on Sunday against the Twins, going 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI. Downs is MLB.com's 49th-best prospect, and he grades out at least average in all of the five major tools. Given that Downs has only 13 career game above Single-A ball, he will almost certainly start the year in the minors, but if second baseman/utility manKike Hernandez struggles in his first ever starting opportunity, look for Downs to get called up around midseason. Only those in dynasty/keeper leagues should be drafting the 22-year-old prospect this spring.
Boston Red Sox prospect Jeter Downs has been added to the team's player pool and will report to the alternate training site in Pawtucket, which will open this weekend. The 21-year-old was a key piece of the blockbuster trade which sent outfielder Mookie Betts and starting pitcher David Price to the Los Angeles Dodgers in February. Joining Downs as the recent additions to the player pool are center fielder Jarren Duranand pitchers Bryan Mata, Jay Groome and Tanner Houck. Other prospects that have been added include first baseman Josh Ockimey, catcher Jhonny Peredaand pitchers R.J. Alvarez and Bobby Poyner. MLB.com has ranked Downs as the top prospect in the Red Sox system, making the middle infielder a must-own in dynasty formats. Downs will continue his development at the alternate training site in 2020, while he is on track to join the big league club in the coming years.
