Chas McCormick Joins Wild-Card Series Roster, Joe Biagini DFA’d
Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick has a chance at making his Major League debut as part of the teams wild-card series roster versus Minnesota. Ranked as the clubs No. 24 prospect per MLB Pipeline, McCormick has combined to steal 35 bases over the past two years, making him a late game pinch-runner option for manager Dusty Baker. In order to add him to the roster, Houston had to designate right-handed pitcher Joe Biagini for assignment, which could end his tenure with the club after a rocky season and a half.
The Houston Astros have placed relief pitcher Joe Biagini (shoulder) on the Injured List with a sore shoulder. Right-handed reliever Andre Scrubb was added to the team's roster in a corresponding move. The Astros are currently hurting badly at pitcher, both starters and relievers. Relievers Chris Devenski and Ryan Pressly are dealing with sore shoulders as well. For now, expect Bryan Abreu to be a busy set-up man in front of closer Roberto Osuna. Abreu should be a great candidate for holds while the team is in recovery mode.
The Houston Astros acquired starting pitcher Aaron Sanchez and reliever Joe Biagini from the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday in exchange for outfielder Derek Fisher, according to a source. This one flies under the radar after Houston also pulled off a blockbuster to acquire starter Zack Greinke at the deadline. Sanchez is 3-14 with an ugly 6.07 ERA in 23 starts this year, while Biagini is 3-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 49 relief appearances. Sanchez might have more AL-only appeal on a better team, but he could also be relegated to long relief. Neither he nor Biagini hold much fantasy value. Fisher disappointed in small sample sizes in Houston the last three years and was being blocked by a strong major league roster. The 25-year-old was hitting .286 with 14 homers and 36 RBI at Triple-A Round Rock, so he could benefit from a change of scenery and see some playing time in Toronto before the year is up.
The Toronto Blue Jays placed closer Ken Giles (elbow) on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with right elbow inflammation. Right-hander Joe Biagini will serve as the closer in Giles' absence. Pitcher Jordan Romano was called up from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move. Giles hadn't pitched since June 5. The hard-throwing right-hander has a 1.08 ERA and has converted 11 of his 12 save chances in 25 innings with 42 strikeouts and seven walks. He could be a valuable trade chip at the deadline this summer for a team expected to be sellers. Manager Charlie Montoyo said he doesn't expect Giles to be out longer than the 10 days on the IL. Daniel Hudson picked up a very shaky save against the Orioles on Wednesday, but we'd still prefer Biagini if you're desperate for saves in deeper leagues in the short term.
Joe Biagini Predictably Unsuccessful Against Athletics
Earlier on Sunday, we recommended that you stay far away from Joe Biagini for fantasy purposes against the Oakland Athletics. We hope you listened. Biaginis miserable 2018 predictably continued against the solid Athletics offense; allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks across four innings pitched with two strikeouts. Yeah, pretty much status quo from what weve seen out of Biagini this season. With Torontos rotation hurting due to injuries to Marcus Stroman and Jaime Garcia, Biagini may get another chance but theres only so many times the Blue Jays can trot his 7.71 ERA to the hill.
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Joe Biagini was originally slated to take the hill on Saturday against the Oakland Athletics, but he was pushed back to Sunday with Sam Gaviglio getting the nod in the former game. What does this mean for fantasy purposes? Nothing. Biagini wasnt much of a fantasy option on Saturday, and wont be on Sunday either. The Athletics may have been shut down by Gaviglio on Saturday, but hes been pitching much better than Biagini this season. It will be Biaginis fourth start of the season; he owns a horrendous 7.98 ERA, 1.84 WHIP, 6.75 K/9 and 4.30 BB/9. Biagini has shown flashes in the past, but his 2018 couldnt be going much worse. Even if youre desperate for pitching on Sunday, you can do a lot better than Biagini.
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Joe Biagini will get the nod on Saturday against the Oakland Athletics. At this point its not an ideal option, but Toronto is hard-pressed at the moment. Biagini showed some flashes in 2017 but has not been good this season. Hes pitched to an extremely poor 7.98 ERA, 1.84 WHIP, 6.75 K/9 and 4.30 BB/9 across 14 2/3 innings in the big leagues. Across 21 2/3 innings for Triple-A Buffalo, Biagini owns a 4.57 ERA, so hes only been slightly better there. It goes without saying that Biagini shouldnt be used in any fantasy format in this one.
With starting pitcher Marcus Stroman now on the disabled list due to shoulder inflammation, Joe Biagini will get the nod for the Toronto Blue Jays against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. The Blue Jays may have faith in Biagini to give them a good outing, but for fantasy purposes, you shouldnt. Although very talented, Biaginis previous flashes havent translated to results in 2018. In two spot-starts for Toronto this year, Biagini owns a terrible 8.10 ERA and 2.00 WHIP while striking out eight against four walks across 10 innings pitched. His results in the minors this season havent been much better, so hes simply not pitching well overall. Given what weve seen he can do previously, though, if he does perform better than expected he could be worth fantasy consideration down the line.
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Joe Biagini is very talented, but hes going to have to start showing that at some point in 2018 to justify the sleeper hype some fantasy owners were attributing to him this past spring. He did not perform well in a spot start against the Cleveland Indians in the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out four. It was Biaginis second spot start of the year, and he now owns an 8.10 ERA after 10 innings pitched. With his current 5.17 ERA for Triple-A Buffalo this year, hes not doing himself any favors in hopes of cracking the rotation down the line this year. Still, hes too talented to not get opportunities, and well likely see him back at some point soon. Hes worth keeping an eye on.
Joe Biagini To Start Game 2 of Thursday’s Doubleheader
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Joe Biagini is now confirmed to start Game 2 of Thursdays doubleheader against the Cleveland Indians. Biagini made one start for Toronto recently, April 17 against the Kansas City Royals, lasting 5 2/3 innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Biagini has very good stuff but has struggled in Triple-A to the tune of a 5.17 ERA and 1.59 WHIP. Hes a much better pitcher than that and should show it if and when he gets more starts for the Blue Jays down the line this season.
