Chas McCormick Dealing with a Side Issue

Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick (side) has been unable to play in Triple-A for the last week due to a side issue, according to manager Joe Espada. McCormick has played 66 games in the majors this year and 11 games in the minors. He came off the injured list after an oblique injury in mid-July but was optioned to Triple-A in early September. He has played sparingly since losing his starting role to Jake Meyers in spring training. McCormick hit only .210 with one homer and two stolen bases in his limited action this year and seems to have faded from the team's plans in the last two seasons after a big year in 2023 when he hit .273 with 22 homers and 19 stolen bases. Even if he does recover in time, his role on the team is uncertain the rest of this season, leaving him well off the fantasy radar.

Chas McCormick Activated from 10-Day Injured List

Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick (oblique) was activated from the 10-day injured list on Friday. In a corresponding move, the Astros optioned outfielder Kenedy Corona to Triple-A Sugar Land. McCormick was held out of action since late May. He made six appearances in the minor leagues during his rehab stint and held a .174/.240/.435 line with two long balls. Before his injury, McCormick held a modest .256/.347/.302 slash line with two doubles and two RBI through 36 games in Houston. The 30-year-old also struggled during the 2024 campaign, posting a .577 OPS with just five home runs. However, he did show some upside in 2023, with a .273/.353/.489 line, 22 home runs, and 19 stolen bases. Fantasy managers should expect McCormick to operate as a depth piece in the outfield and carry minimal fantasy value.

Chas McCormick Struggling on Rehab Assignment

Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick (oblique) has gone just 2-for-20 with a home run, eight strikeouts and a walk through five minor-league rehab games at Triple-A Sugar Land, according to MLB.com. McCormick is currently on the 10-day injured list with a left-oblique strain, but he figures to return for the second half of the season later this month. The 30-year-old has been out since late May and could return for the start of the second half, which begins this Friday, July 18. When he returns, McCormick could actually see more playing time in center field with Jake Meyers (calf) out at least three weeks. McCormick has only played in 36 games for the 'Stros this year and has hit .256 (11-for-43) with no home runs, two RBI and a stolen base in 53 plate appearances. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect much when he's back in Houston.

Chas McCormick Beginning Rehab Assignment on Tuesday

Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick (oblique) is scheduled to join Triple-A Sugar Land for a rehab assignment starting on Tuesday. McCormick continues to work his way back from an oblique strain that has kept him sidelined since the beginning of June. The hope is that McCormick can return to the Astros roster shortly after the All-Star break. Before going down, McCormick was slashing .256/.347/.302 with two RBI and one stolen base in 36 games. He's not someone that needs to be rostered in fantasy leagues right now.

Chas McCormick to Begin Rehab Assignment on Friday

Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick (oblique) is scheduled to travel to Triple-A Sugar Land on Thursday and start a minor-league rehab assignment on Friday, according to manager Joe Espada. As long as McCormick doesn't suffer a setback with his oblique, he could be activated from the 10-day injured list and rejoin the big-league club early next week. The 30-year-old veteran has been sidelined since late May with a strained left oblique and will provide outfield depth for the Astros when he's back. McCormick had been serving as a bench player for Houston before his injury and was hitting .256 (11-for-43) with no homers, two RBI, a steal and six runs scored in 36 games played. He had a career-best 22 long balls, 70 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 115 games for the 'Stros back in 2023, but he's facing an uphill battle for regular playing time in 2025.

Chas McCormick to Face Live Pitching

Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick (oblique) is at the team's spring training facility in Florida to face live pitching, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. It's another positive step for McCormick in his recovery from the strained left oblique that sent him to the injured list on May 30. Before suffering the injury, McCormick hit .256/.347/.302 with no home runs and two RBI in 53 plate appearances. He also struggled last year after posting impressive numbers in his first three seasons. From 2021-23, McCormick combined to bat .259/.336/.449 with 50 homers, 164 RBI, and 27 steals over 1,184 trips to the plate.

Chas McCormick to Face Live Pitching Next Week

Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports that outfielder Chas McCormick (oblique) will likely face live pitching next week in Florida. The 30-year-old has been shelved since May 31 with a left-oblique strain, but has recently progressed to swinging the bat and will soon take the next step in his recovery. He's sporting an unappealing .256/.347/.302 slash line through 36 appearances with just two extra-base hits (zero home runs). It's worth noting he's been far superior against southpaws (.375) than righties (.229) thus far. However, it's too small a sample size to glean any real insight (3-for-8). McCormick projects to require a short minor-league rehab stint before returning to Houston.

Chas McCormick Starts Hitting, Throwing Progression

Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick (oblique) is in Houston this week and has started a hitting and throwing progression as he works his way back from a left-oblique strain, according to The Athletic's Chandler Rome. McCormick landed on the 10-day injured list on May 31 but started hitting off a tee last Friday. Still, the 30-year-old has a few more boxes to check and could be asked to go on a minor-league rehab assignment before rejoining the big-league roster. When McCormick does return, he'll be a platoon option in the outfield for the Astros, at best, and he offers minimal fantasy upside with mediocre power and speed. He was hitting .256 (11-for-43) with no homers, two RBI, one steal, six runs and 14 strikeouts in 36 games this year before his injury. All of McCormick's batted-ball metrics were way down in 2024, too, although it may have been due to the multiple injuries he dealt with.

Chas McCormick Hits Off of a Tee on Friday

Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick (oblique) began hitting off a tee on Friday. The 30-year-old has been out of action since May 29, and at that point had gone 11-for-43 (.256) with two doubles and no home runs along with a 5:14 BB:K in his limited playing time. He also stole one base and was caught stealing three times. The right-handed hitter has been unable to recreate the offense that made him a 22-home-run, 19-steal player in only 115 games back in 2023, and without regular at-bats, there isn't much fantasy appeal here. Nevertheless, he's still a ways away from a return, likely requiring a rehab assignment once his hitting progression is complete.

Chas McCormick Goes on Injured List, Shay Whitcomb Recalled

The Houston Astros placed outfielder Chas McCormick (oblique) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to May 30) on Saturday with a left-oblique strain and recalled infield prospect Shay Whitcomb from Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move. Oblique injuries can be tricky to recover from, so there's a good chance McCormick isn't ready to go when he's eligible to come off the IL. The 30-year-old veteran has hit .256 (11-for-43) in limited playing time as a bench option for the Astros this year with no homers and only two RBI. Whitcomb, the team's No. 15 prospect per MLB Pipeline, will return to the big leagues after going 9-for-41 (.220) with three doubles and five RBI in his first 20 MLB games in 2024. The former fifth-rounder in 2020 out of UC San Diego has swung the bat very well at Sugar Land, clubbing 18 homers, including five in his last three games. He could be worth a deep-league pickup if he plays regularly in Houston.
