Joey Lucchesi Released by the Giants

The San Francisco Giants have granted the release of left-handed pitcher Joey Lucchesi, according to Justice delos Santos of The Mercury News. After the Giants signed Ryan Borucki yesterday, it became clear that Lucchesi would not make the team, so he asked to be released. The southpaw should find an MLB opportunity elsewhere. Not only did he maintain a solid 3.97 FIP over 38.1 innings last year, but he also amassed three innings of work with one earned run, two strikeouts, and zero walks this spring. The 32-year-old will now have a few days to search for a new job before Opening Day arrives on Thursday.

Giants Sign Joey Lucchesi To Minor-League Deal

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the San Francisco Giants have signed left-handed pitcher Joey Lucchesi to a minor-league deal that includes an invite to spring training. The 31-year-old logged just 10 innings in the major leagues last season and spent most of the season with Triple-A Syracuse. Across his small stint with the Mets, the veteran southpaw posted a 5.23 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP. Through 115 innings at the Triple-A level, Lucchesi held a 4.70 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. He struck out 86 batters but struggled with his command, as he served up 56 walks. While he struggled in 2024, Lucchesi posted a solid 2.89 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP across 46 2/3 innings in the majors in 2023. Fantasy managers should expect him to compete for a long-relief role in the San Francisco bullpen during spring training.

Joey Lucchesi Called Up To Start Game 2 Against Braves

New York Mets left-hander Joey Lucchesi was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to make the start in Game 2 of Monday's divisional doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park. In a corresponding move, the Mets optioned pitcher Alex Young. The Mets clinched their wild-card spot with a thrilling comeback victory over their division rivals in Game 1 on Monday, so they will turn to Lucchesi in Game 2 and save right-hander Luis Severino for Game 1 of the wild-card series against either the San Diego Padres or Milwaukee Brewers on the road on Tuesday. Fantasy managers playing DFS on Monday will want to avoid the 31-year-old southpaw against an Atlanta team in a must-win situation. Lucchesi made just one start for the Mets this year, allowing five earned runs on 4 1/3 innings on May 15 at the Philadelphia Phillies.

Joey Lucchesi Sent To Triple-A

The New York Mets optioned left-hander Joey Lucchesi to Triple-A Syracuse after Wednesday night's game and recalled left-hander Josh Walker from Syracuse in a corresponding move. In his spot start on Wednesday versus the division-rival, Lucchesi didn't fare well, allowing five runs over 4 1/3 innings of work while walking four and striking out two to take the loss. The 30-year-old southpaw was making his season debut for the Mets, but now he'll head back to the minors to serve as starting pitching depth for the organization. Walker, 29, will give the Mets' bullpen a fresh arm. He made his big-league debut last year and had an 8.10 ERA and 1.80 WHIP in just 10 innings. So far in 2024, Walker has tossed three shutout innings in relief while walking one and striking out three for the Mets.

Jose Butto, Joey Lucchesi Could Enter Mets Rotation

New York Mets right-hander Jose Butto and left-hander Joey Lucchesi are the team's starting rotation options to replace Tylor Megill (shoulder) that are already on the 40-man roster. Megill landed on the injured list on Monday. Butto impressed club officials with a strong showing in spring training and was one of the final roster cuts. But he struggled with command and walked four in five innings in his first start with Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday. Manager Carlos Mendoza said in February that Lucchesi showed up to spring training a bit behind other starters, although he threw five scoreless innings for Syracuse on Friday. Prospects Christian Scott and Mike Vasil will likely see time with the Mets in 2024, but it's unclear how early that might occur. If New York looks externally for pitching help, it could come in the form of veteran free agent Julio Teheran.

Tylor Megill, Joey Lucchesi, Others Now Competing For Rotation Spot

New York Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said that the team prefers that their yet-to-debut pitching prospects like Mike Vasil, Christian Scott and Dominic Hamel pitch in the minors more before being asked to make their big-league debuts in the wake of right-hander Kodai Senga's (shoulder) injury. The rotation competition with Senga expected to open the year on the injured list will essentially be among Tylor Megill, Joey Lucchesi, Jose Butto and Max Kranick. Adrian Houser could be another option. Megill is probably the best bet and also offers the most upside for fantasy managers in deeper leagues. However, the 28-year-old righty struggled in 2023, posting a 4.70 ERA with 105 K's and 58 walks in 126 1/3 innings pitched over 25 starts.

Joey Lucchesi Officially Recalled On Friday

New York Mets starting pitcher Joey Lucchesi has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday. The left-hander was rumored to be called up in order to give Kodai Senga an extra day to rest. That appears to be the plan as Lucchesi is in line to take the ball versus the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. The left-hander holds a 4.43 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, with a 17/8 K/BB ratio across five starts this season with the Mets. He'll be a possible streaming option in deep leagues for Friday's slate.

Joey Lucchesi Could Make Spot Start Friday

The New York Mets may call up left-hander Joey Lucchesi from Triple-A Syracuse in order to make a spot start this week to give right-hander Kodai Senga an extra day of rest in the starting rotation. Lucchesi has been on the seven-day injured list in the minors recently, but he's made two rehab starts with High-A Brooklyn and appears to be healthy now. If the Mets call on the 30-year-old southpaw, he'd likely be making a spot start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, which is Senga's turn in the rotation. In five starts for the Mets earlier this year, Lucchesi allowed 11 earned runs on 22 hits (four homers) while walking eight and striking out 17 in 22 1/3 innings pitched. He'll be a low-upside streamer in deeper leagues and DFS if he starts on Friday.

Joey Lucchesi Expected To Start On Sunday

New York Mets starting pitcher Joey Lucchesi is expected to start on Sunday against the Colorado Rockies. Mets manager Buck Showalter told reporters that Lucchesi is tentatively scheduled to start after starting Wednesday's game against the Tigers. He'll be pitching on short rest but he only threw 46 pitches in his previous appearance. The lanky left-hander has a 3.86 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 13 punchouts over his first three starts (16 1/3 innings) this year.

Joey Lucchesi Has Big Game On Friday

New York Mets starting pitcher Joey Lucchesi was brilliant during Friday's 7-0 win over the Giants. The 29-year-old, making his first big league start since 2021, looked good in this one. He was on the bump for seven scoreless innings, striking out nine batters while allowing four hits and two walks. With the Mets down Carlos Carrasco (elbow) and Justin Verlander (shoulder), Lucchesi may get some more starts moving ahead, possibly during the series with the Washington Nationals. Although fantasy managers may not receive a repeat performance from the lefty, he's worth a look from those in need of a short-term replacement.
