Joey Lucchesi News
The New York Mets and left-hander Joey Lucchesi avoided salary arbitration on Thursday by agreeing to a one-year, $1.15 million deal, according to a source. It's the exact same salary he made in 2022 while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Lucchesi went on a minor-league rehab assignment in September but didn't pitch at all in the big leagues in 2022. If healthy in 2023, he could have a significant role for New York as a swing man. The 29-year-old southpaw went 1-4 with a 4.46 ERA (3.40 FIP), a 1.17 WHIP and a 26.1 percent strikeout rate in 38 1/3 innings over 11 appearances (eight starts) for the Mets in 2021. In his four years in the majors (three with San Diego), Lucchesi has a 4.24 ERA (4.12 FIP), a 1.27 WHIP, 349 strikeouts and 112 walks in 337 2/3 frames over 70 outings (66 starts).
New York Mets starting pitcher Joey Lucchesi (elbow) is scheduled to throw against live hitters during batting practice on Friday. The 29-year-old hasn't pitched all season as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. It sounds like Lucchesi is nearing a rehab assignment. That being said, there's a chance Lucchesi rejoins the Mets roster as early as next month. It's uncertain whether or not Lucchesi will rejoin the team as a starter or in a bullpen role. That being said, it's tough to evaluate what kind of value Lucchesi is going to have without knowing his role.
New York Mets left-hander Joey Lucchesi (elbow), who is recovering from Tommy John surgery last year, said he is hoping to be back in early or mid-August. He is currently with the Mets in Miami this weekend and said his rehab has been "pretty solid." Lucchesi is scheduled to throw his 10th bullpen session on Saturday and will advance to facing live hitters soon. It looks like all is well on the rehab trail for the 29-year-old southpaw, but he still has a ways to go before he's ready to make his season debut for the Mets. Before his injury in 2021, he had gone 1-4 with a 4.46 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 41 strikeouts and 11 walks in 38 1/3 innings over 11 appearances (eight starts). If New York's rotation is at full health by the time Lucchesi returns, he could very well return to a bullpen role.
