The St. Louis Cardinals released relief pitcher/outfielder Jordan Schafer. He was first reassigned to minor league camp but was more recently given his full release, making him a free agent. He's been on the mound and in the outfield in the minor leagues for the last two seasons, but he missed most of last year due to elbow surgery. He's an intriguing piece in that he has had some success playing both ways, but at 31 years old, not a lot of teams will likely be willing to work the experiment.
The St. Louis Cardinals reassigned pitcher/outfielder Jordan Schafer to minor league camp. He was one of seven players to be reassigned to minor league camp by the Cardinals this weekend, but the only one that may have been an interesting piece this season. Schafer played in the big leagues from 2009-2015 as an outfielder but is trying to make a comeback as a relief pitcher/outfielder hybrid. It would make sense if he could get outs, but he struggled quite a bit this spring. He'll continue working in the minor leagues and could get a call-up if he sorts things out. He'd be a useful 25th guy on the roster due to his versatility.
St. Louis Cardinals outfielder/pitcher Jordan Schafer (elbow) has already been throwing off of a mound and is fully recovered from last spring's surgery to repair a ligament in his elbow. Schafer will be in spring camp with the big league club, attempting to latch on as a two-way player. If successful, he would provide extra depth in the bullpen, while also functioning as an extra outfielder.
