Infielder Jordy Mercer has announced that he is retiring from professional baseball. The 35-year-old made the announcement through his personal Twitter account on Tuesday. The Tweet opened up with a heartfelt thank you message to the game of baseball. He Tweeted, "Thank You baseball! Thank you for the opportunity and love you have given me. I hope I loved you back just as much." Mercer spent 10 years in the majors and played the bulk of his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He retires with a career batting average of .256 and 66 career home runs.
Washington Nationals infielder Jordy Mercer got the start at second base against the Red Sox Friday, filling in for youngster Luis Garcia, and he managed a solo home run, his only hit in four at-bats. It's just his second homer in 111 at-bats this season, as he's produced a .686 OPS in limited action as a backup infielder. Mercer is past his days of fantasy relevance, but he still has plenty to offer a big-league team.
Washington Nationals shortstop Jordy Mercer (calf) was placed on the 10-day injured list. The 34-year-old veteran is currently dealing with a left leg strain, and it's even more unfortunate considering he was just activated from the IL over a week ago after spending time on the shelf with a right quad strain. Although Mercer has fantasy upside in the right situation, his inability to remain healthy significantly lowers his ceiling. As a result, he can be safely dropped. Carter Kieboom was recalled from Rochester on Saturday to fill the void caused by Mercer's absence.
Washington Nationals infielder Jordy Mercer made his return to the Nationals lineup Friday, batting sixth and starting at third base, and he had a solid game, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored, though his contributions hardly mattered in the 24-8 blowout loss to the San Diego Padres. Mercer stands to see plenty of playing time in the coming weeks, as Starlin Castro is away from the team on administrative leave. Mercer has had a decent start to the year by his standards, with a .711 OPS and one home run over 77 at-bats, but that still doesn't make him worthy of fantasy rostership.
Washington Nationals infielder Jordy Mercer (quad) has been activated from the 10-day injured list and is starting at third base and batting sixth against the Padres on Friday. Mercer had been out for the past two weeks with a right quad strain, and now he will start at third base while Starlin Castro is out on administrative leave. It seems a good bet that Mercer will be the team's primary third baseman going forward while Castro is investigated over domestic violence allegations, but Mercer likely won't provide much fantasy value as he is only slashing .270/.299/.365 with one home run, one RBI and eight runs scored over 32 games this season.
The Washington Nationals placed shortstop Jordy Mercer (quadriceps) on the 10-day injured list on Friday with a strained right quadriceps and called up infielder Humberto Arteaga from Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move. The Nationals are hurting for middle infielders with Mercer and Trea Turner (finger) injured, so they were forced to make a move after catcher Alex Avila had to play second base on Thursday. Arteaga last appeared in the big leagues in 2019 with the Kansas City Royals and hit .197 (24-for-122) with no homers and four RBI in 41 games. He was hitting just .227 with 11 home runs in 29 games in the minors this year and should be avoided in DFS when he starts at shortstop on Friday against Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Julio Urias.
Washington Nationals infielder Jordy Mercer (quadriceps) was unable to get his quad loose due to cramping on Thursday and may not be able to play on Friday. This has become an issue for the Nationals at shortstop with Trea Turner (finger) potentially missing a couple more games with a jammed finger he suffered on Wednesday. As a result, 34-year-old backup catcher Alex Avila was forced to start at second base on Thursday. Carter Kieboom is dealing with a knee injury in the minors and Luis Garcia and Adrian Sanchez are also injured. If both Turner and Mercer are unable to play on Friday, the Nats may have to go outside the organization for a replacement up the middle. If Mercer gets the start at shortstop or the keystone on Friday, he'll be a low-cost DFS dart throw against Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Luis Urias.
The Detroit Tigers re-signed shortstop Jordy Mercer to a minor league deal on Thursday. He'll receive an invite to spring training. Mercer played in only 74 games for Detroit in 2019 due to injury, but he did hit a respectable .270/.310/.438 with nine home runs and 22 RBI. Still, he's a glove-first player that won't offer fantasy owners much with his bat, and he's not even guaranteed to see regular playing time with a rebuilding club if he makes the major league roster. At best, Mercer is bench depth in AL-only leagues at middle infield.
Jordy Mercer Not Ready To Restart Rehab Assignment
Detroit Tigers shortstop Jordy Mercer (quadriceps) continues to receive treatment on his right quadriceps, but he's not ready to resume his rehab assignment. Mercer has been out since May 7 and has no timetable for a return. The Tigers have plenty of other middle infield options at their disposal and Mercer was hitting a weak .206/.275/.317 with a homer and three RBI in 69 plate appearances before his injury, so even those in AL-only leagues won't be waiting on his return.
Josh Harrison, Jordy Mercer To See Specialist Monday
Detroit Tigers second baseman Josh Harrison (hamstring) and shortstop Jordy Mercer (quadriceps) will both head to Dallas on Monday to visit with Dr. Daniel E. Cooper. Mercer was getting close to a return but suffered a setback on his rehab assignment this week. There is no timetable for either player's return at this point. Fantasy owners won't be missing them while they're out, either, as neither middle infielder was doing much at the plate before their injuries. Detroit will mix and match up the middle with Niko Goodrum, Ronny Rodriguez, Gordon Beckham, Brandon Dixon and Dawel Lugo.
