Infielder Jordy Mercer has announced that he is retiring from professional baseball. The 35-year-old made the announcement through his personal Twitter account on Tuesday. The Tweet opened up with a heartfelt thank you message to the game of baseball. He Tweeted, "Thank You baseball! Thank you for the opportunity and love you have given me. I hope I loved you back just as much." Mercer spent 10 years in the majors and played the bulk of his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He retires with a career batting average of .256 and 66 career home runs.

Mercer played in only 74 games for Detroit in 2019 due to injury, but he did hit a respectable .270/.310/.438 with nine home runs and 22 RBI. Still, he's a glove-first player that won't offer fantasy owners much with his bat, and he's not even guaranteed to see regular playing time with a rebuilding club if he makes the major league roster. At best, Mercer is bench depth in AL-only leagues at middle infield.

Detroit Tigers shortstop Jordy Mercer (quadriceps) continues to receive treatment on his right quadriceps, but he's not ready to resume his rehab assignment. Mercer has been out since May 7 and has no timetable for a return. The Tigers have plenty of other middle infield options at their disposal and Mercer was hitting a weak .206/.275/.317 with a homer and three RBI in 69 plate appearances before his injury, so even those in AL-only leagues won't be waiting on his return.
Josh Harrison, Jordy Mercer To See Specialist Monday
Detroit Tigers second baseman Josh Harrison (hamstring) and shortstop Jordy Mercer (quadriceps) will both head to Dallas on Monday to visit with Dr. Daniel E. Cooper. Mercer was getting close to a return but suffered a setback on his rehab assignment this week. There is no timetable for either player's return at this point. Fantasy owners won't be missing them while they're out, either, as neither middle infielder was doing much at the plate before their injuries. Detroit will mix and match up the middle with Niko Goodrum, Ronny Rodriguez, Gordon Beckham, Brandon Dixon and Dawel Lugo.
