Diamondbacks
The Arizona Diamondbacks re-signed left-hander Jose Castillo to a minor-league deal on Wednesday. Castillo spent all of the 2024 season pitching at Triple-A Reno, posting a 4.35 ERA in 21 games and 20 2/3 innings pitched. He will return to return for the second straight year in 2025 while providing the D-backs will a valuable left-handed relief arm. Arizona currently has a strong left-handed relief group at the major-league level, including A.J. Puk, but Castillo could be on the short list to be called up to the majors if any of their southpaws is injured. The Venezuelan hurler made his MLB debut in 2018 with the San Diego Padres, and all four of his big-league seasons have come with them. In his 40 relief appearances for the Padres, he recorded a 4.24 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 55 strikeouts and 16 walks in 40 1/3 innings pitched. Of his 40 1/3 innings in the bigs, 38 1/3 of them came in 2018.

Marlins Acquire Jose Castillo From Padres
The Miami Marlins acquired left-hander Jose Castillo from the San Diego Padres on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations. The Marlins then optioned Castillo to Triple-A Jacksonville. The move comes after the Padres designated Castillo for assignment last week. In his only relief appearance for the Friars in 2023, he allowed four earned runs on two hits while walking two and striking out none in one-third of an inning on July 4 against the Los Angeles Angels. The 27-year-old Venezuelan southpaw was sporting an ugly 9.82 ERA, 2.07 WHIP, two saves, 11 walks and 22 strikeouts in 18 1/3 relief innings over 22 appearances for Triple-A El Paso before the trade.

Jose Castillo Undergoing Tommy John Surgery
The San Diego Padres announced reliever Jose Castillo (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery. The development is another terrible turn for the 25-year-old, who has pitched just 2/3 innings since 2018. Castillo was poised to compete for a middle relief role with the Friars but will instead start the long road to recovery. After bursting on the scene with a 3.29 ERA and 12.2 K/9 in 2018, Castillo's playing future is now unpredictable and he should be discounted in all dynasty leagues.

Jose Castillo Finally Ready To Contribute Again
San Diego Padres reliever Jose Castillo appears ready to finally contribute again this season. After a stellar 2018 where he posted a 3.29 ERA and electric 12.2 K/9, Castillo has pitched only 2/3 innings in two seasons dealing with myriad arm injuries. Still just 25 years old, the Friars believe he's a "full-go" in spring training, but he'll likely be eased into action. Fangraphs currently has Castillo outside of the big league roster, but he should have an opportunity to earn at least low-leverage innings if he's healthy. Not a fantasy consideration in standard formats, Castillo is a target in deep holds league if his stock ascends in March.

Padres Not Ruling Out Jose Castillo's Return
San Diego Padres manager Jayce Tingler said reliever Jose Castillo (lat) is "feeling much better than he was a week ago," but he's yet to throw off a mound. The southpaw suffered a teres major strain during summer camp and was labelled as a long-shot to return this season upon the diagnosis. The team remains optimistic that he'll return before the season ends, but he won't hold much fantasy relevance after missing nearly the entire 2019 campaign as well. Castillo impressed as a rookie in 2018 with 12 holds and a 34.7% K-rate, but remains solely a dynasty stash.

Jose Castillo Out Six Weeks With Lat Strain
San Diego Padres reliever Jose Castillo (lat) was diagnosed with a teres major strain and will be out at least six weeks. The injury is another brutal setback for the 24-year-old, who was expected to be a key cog in the Padres loaded bullpen. Castillo was electric as a rookie in 2018 with a 3.29 ERA and 12.2 K/9 in 37 appearances but was restricted to just two-thirds of an inning last year fighting through elbow and hand issues. As a middle reliever, Castillo held minimal fantasy value but hell be a longshot to pitch this season. The injury likely expands the opportunities for rookie relievers Michel Baez and Adrian Morejon to maintain steady roles on the staff.

Jose Castillo Injures Lat
San Diego Padres relief pitcher Jose Castillo (lat) left the Tuesday night intrasquad with a lat injury, according to manager Jayce Tingler. The Padres are awaiting results from some tests, but they think Castillo is dealing with a lat strain, which would almost certainly cause him to miss the beginning of the regular season. The 24-year-old southpaw from Venezuela only saw two-thirds of an inning in the big leagues in 2019, but he was solid with a 3.29 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 52 strikeouts in 38 1/3 relief innings over 37 appearances in his first year in the majors in 2018. Castillo will strictly be a middle reliever for the Friars if he pitches at all in 2020.

Jose Castillo Activated, Adrian Morejon To IL
The San Diego Padres activated reliever Jose Castillo (forearm) from the 60-day injured list and placed reliever Adrian Morejon (shoulder) on the 15-day IL. Castillos next pitch will be his first in 2019 as hes battled forearm issues since spring training. The 23-year-old was a stud from the bullpen last season with a 3.29 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 12.2 K/9 across 37 games. Castillo will surely be welcomed back to a shaky Padres bullpen and could help anchor fantasy ratios down the stretch. Correspondingly, Morejon has scuffled with a 10.13 ERA in five appearances since his promotion to the big leagues and will be temporarily shut down with an impinged shoulder. Morejon, the teams No. 7 prospect will surely get another opportunity but severity of his injury is to be determined.

Jose Castillo Experiencing Forearm Tightness
San Diego Padres relief pitcher Jose Castillo (forearm) was shut down Monday due to left forearm tightness. This could be an ominous sign for the Padres top left-handed bullpen arm at the onset of spring training. The 23-year-old Castillo turned heads in 2018 with a 3.29 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and spectacular 35 percent strikeout rate in 38 1/3 innings. Forecasted as a late-round relief option for efficient ratios and the occasional save, Castillo will need to be bumped off fantasy draft radars until clarity develops on his injury timeline.

Jose Castillo Could Be Future Closer
San Diego Padres relief pitcher Jose Castillo could have the stuff (fastball/slider mix) and demeanor to be the team's future closer. He has a 2.45 ERA and has allowed 16 hits in 33 innings while striking out 35 percent of the hitters he faces. "The scary thing is he's still learning, still getting better," said pitching coach Darren Balsley. "He'll learn how to get hitters out, instead of just throwing the baseball with good stuff. He's smart. He has an intellect. He's a good self-evaluator. ... The sky's the limit with him." Castillo also ranks 32nd in the league in swinging-strike rate (15.8 percent) and 30th in average exit velocity (84.8 mph). In the last three weeks he's allowed two hits and two walks while striking out 13 in 9 2/3 frames. Castillo will be one to keep an eye on early next season for those speculating on saves in deeper leagues.
