Josh Phegley announced his retirement from Major League Baseball on Wednesday. Family considerations and business opportunities factored into his decision to hang up his spikes. Phegley was drafted in the first round (38th overall) by the Chicago White Sox in 2009 and will retire just over a week before his 33rd birthday. He made his MLB debut with Chicago in 2013 and played just two seasons with the Pale Hose before moving to the Athletics, where he spent the next five seasons of his career. Phegley played last season with the Cubs, getting just one hit (a home run) in 16 at-bats. He'll finish his career with a .225/.268/.381 slash line, 35 home runs and 162 RBI in 387 games played over eight big-league seasons.
The Oakland Athletics non-tendered relief pitcher Blake Treinen and catcher Josh Phegley on Monday, making them both free agents. Treinen was one of the best closers in baseball in 2018, but he fell flat in 2019 and lost the closing gig to Liam Hendriks. Treinen posted an ugly 4.91 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, 59 K's and 16 saves in 58 2/3 frames. He'll now be one of the most attractive relievers on the open market, and teams will be hoping that he can bounce back from his 2019 hiccup. Phegley hit .239/.282/.411 with 12 home runs and 62 RBI as Oakland's primary catcher last season. He'll likely compete for a backup role wherever he lands, giving him minimal fantasy value.
Oakland Athletics catcher Josh Phegley was 1-for-4 with a two-run home run during Thursday's 10-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels. The veteran backstop has offered decent production to fantasy owners this season. He is slashing .246/.288/.421 with 11 HRs, 55 RBI, and 41 runs scored. Phegley is a mid-tier catcher that offers modest power. The 31-year-old is a serviceable option in two-catcher leagues or mixed formats with 12 or more teams.
Oakland Athletics catcher Josh Phegley (thumb) has been activated from the 10-day injured list on Friday. Phegley missed all month due to a nagging thumb injury. He's hitting .243/.283/.427 with 10 home runs and 47 RBI this season. He's not fantastic with the bat, but could offer help in deep leagues and AL-only formats.
The Oakland Athletics placed catcher Josh Phegley (thumb) on the injured list on Wednesday with a left thumb contusion and recalled catcher Beau Taylor from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move. Phegley has been Oakland's primary catcher this year and was hitting a mediocre .243/.283/.427 with 10 long balls, 34 runs and 47 RBI in 239 at-bats. Taylor will split time behind the dish with Chris Herrmann for however long Phegley is out, but it doesn't figure to be that long of an absence.
Oakland Athletics catcher Josh Phegley was 1-for-2 with a two-run home run, three RBI, and a walk during a 7-6 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. The 31-year-old has been a surprisingly useful fantasy asset this season, slashing .246/.287/.439 to go along with 10 HRs, 47 RBI, and 34 runs scored. Phegley has surpassed his career highs in almost all major statistical categories. At a weak position, Phegley is worthy of ownership in all formats.
Oakland Athletics catcher Josh Phegley went 2-for-4 with a double, a three-run home run, two runs scored and three RBI in Wednesday's 8-3 victory against the Baltimore Orioles. He is now slashing .271/.317/.506 with an OPS of .823 across 170 at-bats over 59 games played. Phegley tied the career high nine homers he posted during the 2015 season with the A's, and his 41 RBI are easily a career best. He is posting All-Star caliber numbers despite hitting out of the ninth spot for manager Bob Melvin. Phegley is worth a look as a starter in AL-only fantasy leagues, and he is a decent No. 2 backstop in most mixed formats.
Oakland Athletics catcher Josh Phegley didn't make the start on Wednesday afternoon against the Los Angeles Angels, getting some time to rest. However, he made a pinch-hitting appearance in the seventh inning for Nick Hundley, grounding out in that at-bat. He finished the game behind the dish and added an RBI single. Phegley has enjoyed quite a nice month of May, going 20-for-64 (.313) with five doubles, four homers and 20 RBI across 21 outings, raising his average from .262 to .291. Phegley has emerged as a must-start fantasy option in AL-only leagues and a decent No. 2 backstop in mixed formats.
Oakland Athletics catcher Josh Phegley went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Monday's 8-5 victory against the Los Angeles Angels, his second homer in the past two days. The 31-year-old backstop, who has been mostly a backup, is showing he can handle the everyday chores behind the dish while also contributing plenty of offense. Manager Bob Melvin uses him out of the ninth spot of his order primarily, but Phegley is tied for the team lead in RBI with slugging third baseman Matt Chapman (32). Phegley is a must-start in AL-only fantasy leagues and not a bad No. 2 receiver in mixed play, either.
Oakland Athletics catcher Josh Phegley went 2-for-3 with a double, a solo home run and three RBI in Sunday's 7-1 victory against the visiting Seattle Mariners. The double was Phegley's sixth of the season, and the homer was his ninth, and most of his production has come out of the ninth spot in the order for manager Bob Melvin. Phegley is slashing .281/.326/.504, which is actually better than the likes of more heralded teammates like Matt Olson, Jurickson Profar, Marcus Semien, etc. Phegley has emerged as a decent fantasy backstop in AL-only leagues, and he is worth a look as a No. 2 option in deeper mixed formats at this point.
