Josh Phegley News
Josh Phegley announced his retirement from Major League Baseball on Wednesday. Family considerations and business opportunities factored into his decision to hang up his spikes. Phegley was drafted in the first round (38th overall) by the Chicago White Sox in 2009 and will retire just over a week before his 33rd birthday. He made his MLB debut with Chicago in 2013 and played just two seasons with the Pale Hose before moving to the Athletics, where he spent the next five seasons of his career. Phegley played last season with the Cubs, getting just one hit (a home run) in 16 at-bats. He'll finish his career with a .225/.268/.381 slash line, 35 home runs and 162 RBI in 387 games played over eight big-league seasons.
The Oakland Athletics non-tendered relief pitcher Blake Treinen and catcher Josh Phegley on Monday, making them both free agents. Treinen was one of the best closers in baseball in 2018, but he fell flat in 2019 and lost the closing gig to Liam Hendriks. Treinen posted an ugly 4.91 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, 59 K's and 16 saves in 58 2/3 frames. He'll now be one of the most attractive relievers on the open market, and teams will be hoping that he can bounce back from his 2019 hiccup. Phegley hit .239/.282/.411 with 12 home runs and 62 RBI as Oakland's primary catcher last season. He'll likely compete for a backup role wherever he lands, giving him minimal fantasy value.
Oakland Athletics catcher Josh Phegley was 1-for-4 with a two-run home run during Thursday's 10-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels. The veteran backstop has offered decent production to fantasy owners this season. He is slashing .246/.288/.421 with 11 HRs, 55 RBI, and 41 runs scored. Phegley is a mid-tier catcher that offers modest power. The 31-year-old is a serviceable option in two-catcher leagues or mixed formats with 12 or more teams.
