Julio Teheran Hits Free-Agent Market Again

Veteran right-hander Julio Teheran opted out of his minor-league deal with the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, according to the team. Teheran had gone 1-1 with a 9.18 ERA and 2.04 WHIP while striking out 12 and handing out 11 free passes in 16 2/3 innings in his four starts for Triple-A Norfolk, so the Orioles understandably had no designs on bringing him up to the big leagues anytime soon. The 33-year-old had a bloated 8.82 ERA and 1.81 WHIP in eight minor-league starts for Triple-A Iowa in the Chicago Cubs' minor-league system earlier this year and allowed four earned runs on six hits (one homer) while walking two and striking out three in just 2 2/3 frames in his only big-league start in 2024 for the New York Mets. Teheran is probably a long shot at this point to resurface in the big leagues with another team in a starting role.

Julio Teheran Designated For Assignment

The New York Mets have designated pitcher Julio Teheran for assignment on Tuesday, the team announced. Teheran signed a one-year $2.5 million deal with the Mets on April 5 after he failed to make the Baltimore Orioles roster. The right-hander made one start for New York allowing four runs on six hits across 2 and 2/3 innings. Following the outing, the Mets designated the right-hander for assignment, and in his spot, New York called up right-handed pitcher Dedniel N ez.

Julio Teheran To Start On Monday Against Braves

New York Mets right-hander Julio Teheran will officially make his 2024 debut with the Mets on Monday in Atlanta against the division-rival Braves, and he'll be good for 70 to 75 pitches. Teheran will also potentially be available out of the bullpen on Friday in the series opener against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks. The 33-year-old veteran was trying to win a roster spot with the Baltimore Orioles in spring training this year but was cut before Opening Day and has landed in the National League with the Mets. He'll give the team some rotation help with both Kodai Senga and Tylor Megill on the injured list due to shoulder injuries. At best, Teheran is a waiver-wire pickup for the pitching-needy in deep NL-only leagues, and he should be avoided in his first start versus Atlanta.

Mets Sign Julio Teheran, Could Make Debut On Monday

The New York Mets signed free-agent right-hander Julio Teheran to a major-league deal on Wednesday, and club officials believe that he'll be capable of starting Monday's series opener against the division-rival Atlanta Braves. With Kodai Senga (shoulder) and Tylor Megill (shoulder) both on the injured list with shoulder injuries, the Mets are desperate for rotation help in the early going. The 33-year-old Teheran was competing for a roster spot with the Baltimore Orioles, so apparently he's stretched out enough to come right in and make a start for the Mets early next week. He had a 4.40 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 71 2/3 innings for the Milwaukee Brewers last year but should be avoided in all fantasy formats for what is expected to be his first start of 2024 against the Braves.

Mets Renew Talks With Julio Teheran

The New York Mets are open to external options to bolster their starting rotation and have renewed talks with free-agent veteran right-hander Julio Teheran, according to league sources. The Mets finished second to the Baltimore Orioles on Teheran in spring training, but he recently opted out of his contract with the O's and is available again after not making their Opening Day rotation. The 33-year-old outperformed expectations in 2023 in 14 appearances (11 starts) with the Milwaukee Brewers, going 3-5 with a 4.40 ERA (4.93 FIP) and 1.13 WHIP with 13 walks and 50 strikeouts in 71 2/3 innings. Mets ace Kodai Senga (shoulder) started the year on the injured list, and the Mets added Tylor Megill (shoulder) to the IL, so they are definitely in need of rotation help early on. Teheran would only be worth adding in NL-only leagues if he lands in the Big Apple.

Julio Teheran Joins Orioles

Free-agent right-hander Julio Teheran signed a minor-league deal with the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Teheran will receive $2 million if he's on the major-league roster in 2024, and his deal also includes a $100,000 signing bonus and an opt-out clause. The 33-year-old pitched above expectations in 2023 with the Milwaukee Brewers, going 3-5 with a 4.40 ERA (4.93 FIP) and 1.13 WHIP with 13 walks and 50 strikeouts in 71 2/3 innings over 14 appearances (11 starts). At best, Teheran will provide some veteran insurance for an Orioles rotation that will be without both righty Kyle Bradish (elbow) and lefty John Means (elbow) to start the season. Fantasy managers should be avoiding Teheran in mixed leagues if he's making starts in Baltimore early in the year.

Julio Teheran Opts For Free Agency

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Julio Teheran elected to become a free agent on Friday. Milwaukee designated the longtime Atlanta Brave for assignment last Friday and he now hopes to latch onto another club this winter. Teheran was most recently able to make a couple of relief appearances for the Brewers in late September after a right hip impingement shelved him for nearly two months. The two-time All-Star righty appeared to be a shrewd pickup with a 1.53 ERA in 35 1/3 innings pitched through his first six starts of the year but undid that with a 7.18 ERA across his final 36 1/3 IP. Teheran still probably showed enough in 2023, after missing all of 2022 on the comeback trail back to the major leagues, to find a home either as a backend starter or long reliever next year.

Julio Teheran Goes Five Innings In Rehab Start

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Julio Teheran (hip) made his fourth minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Nashville on Sunday and went five innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits while walking two and striking out five for a win. The 32-year-old has now gone five innings in back-to-back rehab starts, so it's likely that his next appearance will be in the big leagues for Milwaukee after going on the injured list on July 30 with a right-hip impingement. The bad news for Teheran is that the Brewers' starting rotation is currently full, so he's expected to return to a long-relief role out of the bullpen, which will make him mostly useless in fantasy.

Julio Teheran To Make Another Rehab Start Tuesday

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Julio Teheran (hip) threw a bullpen session on Sept. 2 in preparation for another minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday. Teheran went on the injured list with a right-hip impingement that had been bothering him since July 18. He began his rehab assignment with High-A Wisconsin on Aug. 25 and threw 30 of his 43 pitches for strikes. He then allowed four runs on seven hits over 2 1/3 innings with Nashville on Aug. 31. The 32-year-old's start on Tuesday could be his final rehab appearance before being activated from the injured list, although Teheran may not rejoin Milwaukee's starting rotation. In 11 starts for the Brewers this year, Teheran has gone 2-5 with a 4.74 ERA (5.06 FIP), 1.13 WHIP, 11 walks and 44 K's in 62 2/3 innings.

Julio Teheran Starts Rehab Assignment On Friday

Milwaukee Brewers right-handed pitcher Julio Teheran (hip) began a minor-league rehab assignment with High-A Wisconsin on Friday. The 32-year-old seems to be on track for an early-September return if all goes well on the farm. Teheran has been on the mend with a right hip impingement since late July, but it's nagged him since July 18. The veteran righty may not come back as a starter with Brandon Woodruff having since returned during Teheran's stead. Teheran surprised with a 1.53 ERA over his first six starts of the year but fell apart for an 8.89 ERA across the next five showings to form a bumpy 4.74 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 44:11 K:BB in 62 2/3 innings overall.
