Julio Urías News
Los Angeles prosecutors declined to file felony charges against free-agent starting pitcher Julio Urias in connection with his September arrest on suspicion of domestic violence, per the Orange County Register. Urias was placed on administrative leave by MLB shortly after the incident while he was on the Dodgers. The case has instead been referred to the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office for consideration as a possible misdemeanor case. This is his second domestic violence offense, as he was suspended for 20 games after the first incident in 2019. While Urias has been a higher-end fantasy option throughout his career, it remains to be seen if any MLB teams will be willing to offer him a contract.
Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Julio Urias was placed on administrative leave and might have pitched his last game for the team after being arrested for the second time on felony domestic-violence charges on Sunday night. Urias was suspended for 20 games after the first incident in 2019, and he's likely to receive a second suspension that could eat up the remainder of the 2023 season/postseason. The 27-year-old is scheduled to become a free agent this offseason, but that will go very differently after his latest domestic-violence incident. While fantasy managers may not want to drop Urias just yet, they should fully prepare for him not to pitch again in 2023. If this is the end of his 2023 campaign, he'll finish with an 11-8 record, 4.60 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 117 strikeouts in 117 1/3 innings over his 21 starts in LA.
Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Julio Urias was arrested and charged with felony domestic violence late Sunday night, according to a Los Angeles Police Department officer. The 27-year-old southpaw was booked late Sunday and released early Monday morning on $50,000 bond. It's not the first time Urias has been involved with domestic violence, as he was suspended 20 games for the same thing back in 2019. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect Urias to make his next scheduled start this Thursday against the Miami Marlins, and there's a very good chance he'll go on administrative leave the rest of the season while the league investigates the matter. A lengthy suspension in 2024 is likely coming as well.

Julio Urias had his best year in the Majors in 2022, with a 17-7 W-L record, 2.16 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 166 Ks (175.0 IP). Only Justin Verlander had a lower ERA among qualified pitchers and that helped him to third in the NL Cy Young voting (behind Sandy Alcantara and Max Fried). So, it should come as no surprise that Urias has an ADP of ~49 (as the 12th starting pitcher) and there's nothing to suggest he can't offer value on that ADP. Urias' underlying numbers last year do suggest he was a bit lucky and we should expect regression, with a 2.81 xERA, 3.66 SIERA and 3.81 xFIP. Urias' HardHit% ranked in the 96th percentile and he has a career 4.00 xFIP and 3.91 SIERA despite having a career 2.82 ERA so it's not something that should put you off from drafting Urias. Urias might not manage 200 IP like other SP1 candidates but his 360.2 IP over the last two years has only been bettered by 12 other pitchers so there shouldn't be any concerns over his resilience. On a team that continues to put up runs, outside of strikeouts, there's no reason not to take Urias at his ADP.
