Kelvin Gutierrez News
Baltimore Orioles third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez led the way in a 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers Saturday, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. The two-run shot was Gutierrez's second of the year and the third of his career, coming off Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jordan Lyles in the seventh inning. Gutierrez has swung the bat well in his last seven games, slashing .348/.423/.565 in 23 at-bats. He has a four-game hit streak, with two straight multi-hit performances, and he could make for a sneaky deep league option in the final week of the year.
The Baltimore Orioles optioned infielder Kelvin Gutierrez to Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday, which could indicate that third baseman Maikel Franco (ankle) is nearing a return from the injured list. Gutierrez had been splitting time at the hot corner with Domingo Leyba, but he had just four hits in 23 at-bats (.174) with no homers and nine strikeouts after slashing .215/.254/.296 with a homer and eight RBI in 38 games earlier this year with the Kansas City Royals. Franco has been out since July 7 with a sprained ankle, but he should return to regular duties at third base when he's activated. The 28-year-old still has useful pop in deeper leagues with nine home runs, but he's also batting just .221 with an uninspiring .265 on-base percentage for the lowly Orioles.
Kansas City Royals third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez had a strong game at the plate in the team's 11-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Saturday. Gutierrez went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a triple. The home run was his first of the year. Gutierrez has had an everyday role for the Royals for about a month now since his mid-May call-up. Over 25 games, he's slashing .258/.266/.366. The 26-year-old showed a bit of power and speed in the minors. Over 75 games at Triple-A in 2019, he hit nine home runs and stole 12 bases. However, he has just two home runs and one stolen base over 49 MLB games. Until he starts to deliver either some power or stolen base production, he can be ignored for fantasy purposes.
