The Arizona Diamondbacks released second baseman Kolten Wong from Triple-A Reno on Monday. Wong made it 31 games with the Aces in the minor leagues before being cut. He was hitting .271 (29-for-107) with two home runs, 16 RBI, two stolen bases and 15 runs scored in his 121 plate appearances and will now be looking for another opportunity with another team. The 33-year-old veteran spent the 2023 campaign with the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers and slashed a dreadful .183/.256/.263 combined with four home runs, six doubles, 27 RBI and three stolen bases in 87 games played. The former 22nd overall pick in 2011 out of Hawaii has always been a glove-first second baseman with modest power and speed, and it remains to be seen if he'll ever be able to make it back to a big-league roster.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed second baseman Kolten Wong to a minor-league deal and have assigned him to Triple-A Reno. Wong has inked a minors deal this offseason with the Orioles but failed to crack the Opening Day roster and once again hit the open market. Following a pair of production seasons at the plate with the Brewers, Wong's bat cratered in a brief stint with the Mariners in 2023, hitting just .183 with four homers, three stolen bases, and a .519 OPS across 87 games in the Pacific Northwest. The D-backs have Ketel Marte as their everyday second baseman but fellow infielder Geraldo Perdomo recently underwent knee surgery and will miss about a month's worth of action.
The Baltimore Orioles have signed veteran infielder Kolten Wong to a minor-league deal that includes an invite to big-league spring training. The 33-year-old has several productive seasons on his resume but suffered a disastrous 2023 campaign. Wong hit just .183 with four home runs, three stolen bases, and a .519 OPS across 87 games split between the Mariners and Dodgers. He hit .165 with a .468 OPS across 67 games with the Mariners before being released and he rebounded to a .300 average and an .853 OPS across 34 plate appearances with the Dodgers. He joins a crowded, youthful, and talented infield in Baltimore as he might be able to provide some veteran insurance behind baseball's No. 1 prospect in Jackson Holliday at the keystone.
Second baseman Kolten Wong was released by the Seattle Mariners on Friday. The 32-year-old has struggled this season, batting just .165 in 67 games in Seattle. There's a good chance he'll find a new team relatively soon. However, Wong isn't expected to offer much value to fantasy managers. On the other hand, he's still worth monitoring, considering he's had some productive seasons through the years.
Seattle Mariners executive vice president and general manager of baseball operations Justin Hollander announced on Tuesday that the team designated infielder Kolten Wong for assignment. The team also recalled right-hander Trent Thornton from Triple-A Tacoma and optioned right-hander Juan Then and outfielder Taylor Trammell to Tacoma. Wong just could never get going this year in Seattle after the M's acquired him in a trade from the Milwaukee Brewers last offseason. The 32-year-old veteran infielder was hitting just .165/.241/.227 with two home runs, 19 RBI and 21 runs scored in 194 at-bats. The Mariners are giving new acquisition Josh Rojas his first start at the keystone on Tuesday, and Jose Caballero should also mix in at second base moving forward for Seattle.
Seattle Mariners second baseman Kolten Wong is back in the starting lineup Monday night against Washington Nationals right-hander Trevor Williams. Wong has seen a significant dip in playing time this season amidst a disastrous time at the plate while his defense continues to decline as well. For the season, Wong is hitting just .164 with only one home run, which came this past Thursday. He owns a tiny .459 OPS across 152 plate appearances on the season. The veteran was a solid source of power and speed at the second base position just last season when he hit 15 homers alongside 17 stolen bases with the Brewers but his ugly 2023 season has seen him crater off of the fantasy baseball radar.
Seattle Mariners second baseman Kolten Wong went 2-for-3 with his first home run of the season, an RBI, run scored, a walk and a strikeout in the 10-2 thrashing of the New York Yankees on Thursday. It was a much-needed show of offensive force for the 32-year-old second baseman, who has fallen on hard times with the bat in his first season in Seattle. Even after the two-hit performance on Thursday, he is hitting a pitiful .167 (21-for-126) on the year with three doubles, 10 RBI and 13 runs scored in 44 games played. The poor performance has found him on the bench more often than not. Wong has played in only seven games in June and has gone 4-for-18 (.222) with the one home run, two RBI and seven strikeouts in 20 plate appearances.
Seattle Mariners second baseman Kolten Wong is in danger of losing playing time as he continues to struggle in 2023. Through 32 games, the veteran infielder is slashing just .177/.259/.231 in 108 plate appearances. Of second basemen with 100 plate appearances, he's tied for the lowest wins above replacement (minus-0.6). Wong's wRC+ is the lowest of all second basemen. The 32-year-old has just two hits in his last 21 trips to the plate. He also ranks near the bottom in hard-hit rate, average exit velocity on balls in play, barrel rate and expected batting average. On Wednesday, rookie Jose Caballero got the start at the keystone over Wong, and that could be a trend that continues. Caballero has hit .289/.365/.356 with three doubles, four RBI and three steals in 52 plate appearances.
Seattle Mariners second baseman Kolten Wong isn't in the starting lineup for Tuesday's matchup against Andrew Heaney and the Texas Rangers. He'll get a typical day off with a lefty on the hill, as he owns a career .653 OPS against southpaws. Sam Haggerty will take his spot on the field and bat last in the lineup. The 28-year-old has been horrendous so far over 13 games, slashing .077/.172/.077 with no homers, no RBI, one run, and three RBI. Haggerty's been exceptional versus lefties in his career, though, posting a .270 average with a .846 OPS, so maybe he'll find a spark and provide fantasy managers with some contributions as a streaming option.
Seattle Mariners second baseman Kolten Wong (wrist) remains out of the starting lineup on Monday against the Texas Rangers. Wong hurt his wrist on Saturday against the Houston Astros and will now miss his second straight game. For now, fantasy managers should continue to consider the 32-year-old veteran as day-to-day. Jose Caballero will fill in at the keystone on Monday and hit eighth in the batting order against Rangers right-hander Jon Gray. Wong has been very quiet at the plate so far in 2023 in his first year in Seattle, going just 15-for-79 (.190) with two doubles, no home runs, eight RBI and nine runs scored in his 25 games. Hopefully, a little time off due to his injury will allow him to pick things up offensively when he returns.
