Marlins Trade Jorge Alfaro To Padres, Designate Lewis Brinson

Catcher Jorge Alfaro is headed to the San Diego Padres, as the Miami Marlins have traded him in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Alfaro was expendable after the Marlins acquired 2021 Gold Glove-winning backstop Jacob Stallings from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Alfaro will fight for playing time with Austin Nola, Victor Caratini, and Luis Campusano. The Marlins also designated outfielder and former top prospect Lewis Brinson for assignment. Brinson has 1035 career at-bats, but has only managed a .570 OPS with 25 homers and nine steals. He'll seek to restart his career elsewhere in 2022.

Lewis Brinson Could Possibly Return Tuesday

Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson (thumb) has a chance at playing during Tuesday's doubleheader against the New York Mets, according to manager Don Mattingly. He has been sidelined since last Thursday due to a left thumb injury. Before going down, Brinson was in the middle of a 2-for-34 at the plate. The once prized-prospect has not been able to put it together at the plate. He isn't worth stashing in fantasy leagues and can be left on the waiver wire.

Lewis Brinson Misses His Second Straight Game

Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson (thumb) was held out for the second straight game on Saturday as the team faced the Cincinnati Reds. Brinson suffered a left thumb sprain in Thursday's game against the Washington Nationals. He is being considered day-to-day for now. Jorge Alfaro, Bryan De La Cruz and Jesus Sanchez have filled out the Marlins' outfield in each of the past two games with Brinson sidelined. Over 61 games on the year, Brinson has slashed .239/.280/.426 with seven home runs, 25 RBI and 19 runs.

Lewis Brinson Forced To Leave Thursday's Game

Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson (thumb) was forced to leave Thursday's game against the Washington Nationals. Brinson collided with fellow outfielder Bryan De La Cruz while the two were trying to catch a fly ball that both men were calling for the whole time. Brinson went glove-first into De La Cruz and immediately held his wrist in pain. He was diagnosed with a left thumb sprain, and X-rays were negative. He'll likely miss some time, but ultimately it seems like things didn't end up being as bad as they looked at first.

Lewis Brinson Injures Thumb After Collision

Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson (thumb) exited Thursday's game against the Washington Nationals with a left thumb sprain. He collided with Bryan De La Cruz in the outfield and left the game shortly after. The 27-year-old went 0-for-2 with a run scored and a strikeout before exiting. Brinson's x-rays on his thumb came back negative and he's considered day-to-to-day. Magneuris Sierra replaced him in the game and would see an uptick in playing time if Brinson were to miss any games. Sierra is slashing .247/.294/.291 with seven stolen bases over 99 games in 2021. Fantasy managers in search for speed can use Sierra as a streamer until Brinson returns.

Lewis Brinson Out Of The Lineup On Thursday

Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson is not in the starting lineup for Thursday's series-opener against the Cincinnati Reds. Brinson was absolutely on fire but has cooled down noticeably since Don Mattingly returned to the team and got back to his old tricks. While bench coach James Rowson was managing the team, Brinson hit fourth and played center field every game. Mattingly's constant tinkering, moving Brinson around the lineup and playing him in different outfield spots, has clearly taken its toll. It's a shame after it really looked like Brinson had finally reached the top prospect status that he'd so often missed.

Lewis Brinson Homers Twice On Wednesday

Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson had another excellent game on Wednesday against the San Diego Padres. Brinson went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a walk, and a single, scoring two runs and driving in three. It was another great performance by Brinson, who is finally looking like the top-tier prospect he once was in the Milwaukee Brewers system. This could just be a hot streak that all comes crashing down, but Brinson legitimately seems to be taking better at bats and has clearly changed his approach in the batter's box. This could be the breakout the Marlins have been waiting to see from Brinson. He's worth picking up in all formats right now while he's playing this well.

Lewis Brinson Homers On Monday

Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson hit a home run on Monday in a loss to the San Diego Padres on the road. Brinson went 2-for-4 with a homer and a single, driving in two runs and scoring twice. His single was an infield hit where he showed elite speed in beating out a throw to first. Brinson has been excellent since his most recent call up and is finally playing to the upside he's supposedly had this whole time. With the Marlins in full "evaluate for 2022" mode for the rest of the season, Brinson should get plenty of playing time and is worth a look in deeper mixed leagues at this point. He's the very definition of a post-hype prospect finally getting it together.

Lewis Brinson Reaches Base Four Times On Saturday

Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson reached base four times in Saturday's loss to the Colorado Rockies. Brinson went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a single, and a walk. He scored a run in the game as well. Brinson has been hitting much better since his most recent call up and has been getting consistent playing time after the Marlins traded two of their outfielders before the trade deadline. Brinson is up to a .252 batting average and a .718 OPS. He's always had the upside but he'd never been able to put it together. Maybe this is Brinson finally hitting the ball the way he was always expected to. The classic post-hype prospect is starting to be worth some consideration in mixed leagues.

Lewis Brinson Plates Two Runs In Thursday's Win

Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson drove in two runs with an RBI double in Thursday's win over the New York Mets. It was Brinson's only hit of the game, but it was a huge one, leaving him 1-for-4 with two RBI. Brinson has looked much more like a major league hitter this time around, although he's still nowhere close to the upside that was expected of him as the centerpiece of the Christian Yelich trade with the Brewers several years ago. Brinson should get plenty of playing time in another lost season for the Marlins, and this could be his last chance to show he belongs.
