Jorge Alfaro Agrees With Cubs On Minors Deal

Free-agent catcher Jorge Alfaro agreed with the Chicago Cubs on a minor-league deal on Wednesday, according to sources. The deal includes an invitation to spring training. Alfaro will join the Cubbies in 2024 after spending the 2023 campaign with the Colorado Rockies and Boston Red Sox. He only played in a total of 18 games (52 plate appearances) and went 7-for-48 (.146) with a home run and four RBI in the big leagues. The 30-year-old Colombian will represent minor-league catching depth in Chicago behind Yan Gomes and Miguel Amaya and will not be on the fantasy radar. Alfaro has a .253/.302/.393 career slash line with 48 home runs, 198 RBI and 18 stolen bases in eight major-league seasons with the Phillies, Marlins, Padres, Rockies and Red Sox.

Marlins Sign Jorge Alfaro To Minor-League Deal

The Miami Marlins signed free-agent catcher Jorge Alfaro to a minor-league deal on Tuesday. He's expected to report to Triple-A Jacksonville this week. Alfaro has played in just 18 games at the big-league level with the Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies this year, going 7-for-48 (.146) with a home run, four doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Most of his playing time has come at the Triple-A level. The 30-year-old Colombian backstop will now return to Miami after playing for the team from 2019-21. For now, Alfaro will represent catching depth at the minor-league level behind Nick Fortes and Jacob Stalling at the big-league level.

Jorge Alfaro Returns To The Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox signed free-agent catcher Jorge Alfaro to an undisclosed major-league contract on Thursday, and he'll be active on Thursday night against the visiting Texas Rangers in Beantown. Alfaro joined the Colorado Rockies for 10 games after opting out of his minor-league deal with the Red Sox in June, but now he's back in Boston. The 30-year-old veteran backstop went 5-for-31 (.161) with a homer, four doubles and four RBI in his 10 contests with the Rockies. With Reese McGuire (oblique) currently injured, Alfaro will serve as Connor Wong's backup in his return to Boston. Alfaro isn't much of a fantasy option and won't see regular playing time. He's a career .245 hitter with 48 homers and 198 RBI in 1,690 plate appearances over eight seasons in the majors.

Jorge Alfaro Absent On Friday

Colorado Rockies catcher Jorge Alfaro is absent from the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Los Angeles Angels. The right-handed slugger has served as the designated hitter in four of the last five games. This appears to be a routine rest day for the 30-year-old catcher. Elias Diaz will be behind the plate and bat cleanup, while Randal Grichuk will function as the designated hitter versus left-hander Patrick Sandoval.

Jorge Alfaro Elevated To Majors, Batting Sixth On Thursday

Colorado Rockies catcher Jorge Alfaro had his contract selected ahead of Thursday's game against the Atlanta Braves. Brian Serven has been demoted to Triple-A in a corresponding transaction. Alfaro is operating as the designated hitter and batting sixth against rookie AJ Smith-Shawver in his Rockies debut. The 30-year-old was brought in by Colorado less than a week ago and is hitting .323/.366/.524 with seven homers and five stolen bases in the minor leagues this season. Alfaro is not yet worthy of fantasy consideration, but he presents enough speed potential at the catcher position to be worth watching in redraft leagues.

Jorge Alfaro Finds A Home In Colorado

The Colorado Rockies and free-agent catcher Jorge Alfaro agreed to a minor-league contract on Saturday. The 30-year-old has been out of the majors in 2023 after failing to stand out over his last two seasons. Alfaro is hitting a weak .245 with a .645 OPS across 551 at-bats since 2021. The speedy backstop bolsters Colorado's depth chart behind the dish alongside the emerging Elias Diaz. Alfaro is not close to fantasy relevance at this time, but his speed would make him interesting, nonetheless, if he ever carves out a role in the bigs.

Jorge Alfaro Released By The Red Sox

Boston Red Sox catcher Jorge Alfaro has officially been released by the team on Saturday. Alfaro opted out of his minor league contract earlier this week so Boston decided to release him in lieu of promoting him to the big league club. The 29-year-old backstop hit .246 with a .668 OPS over 256 at-bats last season for the Padres and offers a decent blend of power and speed from the catcher position. He should latch on to another club shortly.

Jorge Alfaro Opts Out Of Deal With Boston

Catcher Jorge Alfaro is opting out of his deal with the Boston Red Sox and has decided to test free agency, according to a source. The Red Sox have 48 hours to add Alfaro to their active MLB roster, or else he'll become a free agent. That's unlikely to happen, so the 29-year-old backstop will be looking for work elsewhere most likely. Alfaro hasn't appeared in the big leagues since last year with the San Diego Padres, when he hit .246 with seven home runs and 40 RBI in 82 games, but he has hit .320 (56-for-175) with 13 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 30 RBI and four stolen bases in 43 games for Triple-A Worcester in 2023 and could attract interest around the league as catching depth. Alfaro remains well off the fantasy radar.

Bobby Dalbec, Jorge Alfaro Optioned To Minors

Boston Red Sox first baseman Bobby Dalbec was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Monday. The Red Sox also sent catcher Jorge Alfaro to minor-league camp. With Dalbec starting the 2023 season in the minors, it means that infielder Yu Chang will be on the Opening Day roster as a utility infielder. Dalbec hit two home runs in spring training, but he also hit only .235 (12-for-51) with five walks and 21 strikeouts in 56 plate appearances. He has some big-time power, but he needs to start making more contact if he wants to come back up to the big leagues and stick around. The Red Sox are rolling with Triston Casas as their regular first baseman to open the 2023 campaign. Boston is going with catchers Reese McGuire and Connor Wong at the position to kick off the season.

Jorge Alfaro Has Not Arrived To Camp

Boston Red Sox catcher Jorge Alfaro has not arrived to camp due to ongoing visa issues. The hope is that the 29-year-old will be able to arrive from Colombia within the next few days. Alfaro signed a minor-league deal with the Red Sox over the offseason. The right-hander slugger has a good chance of making the Opening Day roster. In fact, Alfaro could end up splitting the catching duties with Reese McGuire. That being said, Alfaro's fantasy value is going to be limited, assuming he does end up in a platoon role. He'll probably only be worth rostering in deep leagues to being the season.
