Jorge Alfaro News
MLB.com's Shanthi Sepe-Chepuru reported Monday that the Boston Red Sox reportedly agreed to a minor-league deal with free-agent catcher Jorge Alfaro. The Red Sox would reportedly pay Alfaro $2 million if he is added to the big league roster. The agreement would also include two opt-outs on June 1 and July 1 if he is not with the team on either date. The 29-year-old held some fantasy intrigue earlier in his career but has never really delivered. He slashed .246/.285/.383 with seven home runs and 40 RBI in 274 plate appearances with the Padres in 2022. Alfaro could potentially hold some fantasy value in deep two-catcher leagues if he were to make the big-league roster, but a lot would have to go right for him to get to that point.
San Diego Padres catcher Jorge Alfaro (knee) isn't starting Wednesday's game against the San Francisco Giants. He was removed from Monday's game due to a knee issue. The 29-year-old has now missed back-to-back games and is considered day-to-day. His next chance to return to the lineup will be Friday against the Washington Nationals. Austin Nola will handle catching duties and is batting ninth in Wednesday's contest. Nola has collected a hit in three of his last five games and can be used as a streamer while he's locked in the plate recently.
San Diego Padres catcher Jorge Alfaro isn't starting on Tuesday for a matchup with the Seattle Mariners and right-hander Logan Gilbert. Alfaro is hitting .274 with a .310 on-base percentage, six home runs, and a stolen base in 168 plate appearances for San Diego this season. The Padres will start Austin Nola instead at catcher. In 213 plate appearances this season, the 32-year-old is batting .237 with a .305 on-base percentage, two home runs, and a stolen base. Nola is batting seventh against Gilbert and the Mariners. Fantasy managers are probably better off looking elsewhere for streaming help at catcher.
