Lorenzo Cain News
Free-agent outfielder Lorenzo Cain will officially retire this summer as a member of the Kansas City Royals, the team he spent seven years with from 2011-17. The two-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner finished his career with the Milwaukee Brewers, a team that he spent six of his seasons with. He hit just .179/.231/.234 with a career-low .465 OPS, one home run, nine RBI and 17 runs scored in 43 games for the Brewers in his final season in 2022. Over his 13 years in the big leagues, Cain had a .283/.343/.407 slash line with a .749 OPS, 87 home runs, 454 RBI, 626 runs scored and 190 stolen bases in 1,171 games played. Cain was never really known for his power, but he made plenty of contact, could run well on the bases and was excellent on defense in center field.
Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Lorenzo Cain cleared release waivers on Thursday and has officially become a free agent. The Brewers designated the struggling Cain for assignment last weekend. It came after he hit just .179/.231/.234 with a homer, nine RBI, 17 runs scored and two stolen bases in 156 plate appearances over 43 games played in 2022. It remains to be seen if the two-time All-Star will latch on with another organization, but Cain is unlikely to be much more than outfield depth if he does. Since joining Milwaukee in 2018, the 36-year-old hit .270/.344/.380 with 30 home runs, 133 RBI, 226 runs scored and 63 stolen bases in 415 games over five seasons.
Outfielder Lorenzo Cain was DFA'd by the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, putting an end to his five-year tenure with the team. The decision was a mutual one between Brewers management and Cain, who knew his time in the majors was coming to an end. The former fantasy stud was having a rough go this season, with a .179/.231/.234 slash line and only one home run to go along with two steals. Fantasy managers who have been playing for over a few years will remember his prime years when he was a constant 30-steal guy who could reliably hit .300. His career is likely coming to an end, and what a career it has been.

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Lorenzo Cain spent less than a week in his customary spot as the leadoff man before his 2020 season was over. The 34-year-old opted out after 21 plate appearances, putting an abrupt halt to his campaign. Although many of the small samples from the 60-game season could be misleading, it would have been telling to see if Cain's decline in 2019 would have continued. After finishing among the league leaders in 2018 with a .305 average, .395 on-base percent, and 30 steals, those figures dropped to .260 AVG, .325 OBP, and 16 SB over a larger number of at-bast in 2019. It should be reassuring that his .292 xBA in '19 was actually a tick higher than the previous year's .289 xBA, so some bad luck may have been at play.Cain is a year older and has several months of rust to knock off his veteran frame but the biggest concern should be him physically slowing down. Cain's sprint speed ranking has declined for three straight years, so even if he maintains his traditionally high average and on-base skills, he may be less effective on the basepaths. The Brewers also signed Jackie Bradley Jr. back on March 8, which has created a logjam in the Milwaukee outfield. Cain has been hampered by a nagging quad injury all spring, only recently making his debut. Due to the slow start, Cain could find himself on the shorter end of a timeshare with JBJ. As a player who doesn't bring much power to the table, with 10 HR being his likely ceiling at this point, a lower steal total lessens his roto value. Cain is widely available outside the top 250 picks and doesn't need to be considered any earlier as a safe, but relatively unexciting reserve outfield option.
