Luke Gregerson News

Luke Gregerson Clears Waivers

Former St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Luke Gregerson cleared waivers and has been unconditionally released, making him a free agent. It is difficult to see the 35-year-old Gregerson catch a significant role with someone else given his struggles (7.94 ERA in just 5 2/3 innings this year) and the fact that no team put a claim in on him. He had good success from 2009-16, including 31 saves in 2015, but now appears to be nearing the end given his climbing ERA and peripherals since 2017. Any fantasy relevance has been lacking for some time.

Cardinals Officially Place Luke Gregerson On Waivers

The St. Louis Cardinals have officially placed right-handed relief pitcher Luke Gregerson on waivers. The 35-year-old had pitched in six games for the Cardinals this season, in which he was lit up for a 7.94 ERA and gave up 11 hits and five runs in just 5 2/3 innings of work. His Cardinals career comes to a close with (remarkably) a 0-0 record, but a 7.36 ERA in 18 appearances across the past two seasons.

Cardinals Activate Carlos Martinez, Cut Luke Gregerson

The St. Louis Cardinals activated pitcher Carlos Martinez (shoulder) from the injured list on Friday and designated reliever Luke Gregerson for assignment in a corresponding move. Reliever Ryan Helsley was also recalled from Triple-A Memphis and reliever Dominic Leone was sent down. Martinez, a two-time All-Star had missed the first 44 games of the year with a strained right shoulder. Because he hasn't been able to stay healthy the last two years, he'll return to the bullpen. The 27-year-old won't have much fantasy appeal in relief, but he still could return to the rotation at some point in 2019 if he proves worthy. Gregerson, 35, allowed five runs and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings in six relief outings after coming off the injured list on May 4.

Luke Gregerson Activated on Saturday

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Luke Gregerson (shoulder) has been activated from the 10-day injured list on Saturday. Gregerson has not pitched in the MLB this season, but should be a key part to the Red Birds bullpen. Gregerson struggled last season, so the Cardinals will likely start him out in middle relief. However, Gregerson should be in high leverage situations if he doesn't show signs of regression. Outfielder Tyler O'Neill has been optioned to Triple-A to make room for Gregerson on the active roster.

Luke Gregerson Should Rejoin Cardinals Soon

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Luke Gregerson (shoulder) should be ready to rejoin the Cardinals bullpen by the end of this week. He has joined the team in Washington, D.C., and is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session on Wednesday. Gregerson hasn't appeared in a Major League game yet this year, but he had a strong rehab assignment, putting up a 1.64 ERA in 11 minor league innings while striking out 10. He should be a strong contributor to the Cardinals bullpen and may develop some value in holds leagues.

Luke Gregerson Likely to Be Activated on Tuesday

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Luke Gregerson (shoulder) has joined the team on Monday and could be activated on Tuesday. Gregerson was pitching elite during his rehab appearances, so it sounds like he's ready to return to the Red Birds bullpen. Gregerson won't have a bunch of fantasy value, but could be helpful if he's able to stay healthy.

Luke Gregerson Inching Towards Return

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Luke Gregerson (shoulder) is moving to Double-A Springfield for the next few days. Gregerson is nearing the end of his rehab assignment for a right shoulder impingement and has been feeling "tremendously better." The plan is for the veteran reliever to be used in a less-structured manner. Gregerson has allowed one run on four hits while striking out seven and walking none in his eight minor league outings so far. The 34-year-old has been injured for much of his time with the Cardinals and threw only 12 2/3 innings last season. His return will help boost St. Louis' bullpen, but he's unlikely to have much fantasy value in a setup role.

Luke Gregerson To Begin a Rehab Assignment

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Luke Gregerson (shoulder) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Palm Beach. He's been stricken with shoulder injuries since last season, but he and the team are hoping this time he'll be back throwing for good. He should be able to work his way into a setup role once he's back on the mound in St. Louis.

Luke Gregerson Seeking Second Opinion

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Luke Gregerson (shoulder) will see Dr. James Andrews next week for a second opinion on his shoulder impingement. Gregerson just hasn't been able to stay healthy this year, and when he's pitched he's been bad. He has a 7.11 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 12 strikeouts over just 12 2/3 innings for the Red Birds in 2018. It might be a surprise if he makes it back to close out the season.

Luke Gregerson Likely Done for The Season

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Luke Gregerson (shoulder) was placed on the disabled list earlier this week with a right shoulder impingement. It's the same issue that forced him to the DL earlier in the season. He also missed time with a strained hamstring and knee surgery. Gregerson holds a 7.11 ERA over 17 appearances with the Cards this season. St. Louis has shut him down indefinitely, so his 2018 campaign is likely over. Fantasy owners should go ahead and look elsewhere for bullpen help.
