Carlos Martinez Suspended 85 Games

Free-agent right-hander Carlos Martinez has been suspended for 85 games, retroactive to June 19, for violating the league's joint domestic-violence, sexual-assault and child-abuse policy. It's been a bad year for Martinez, as he was also handed an 80-game suspension on May 27 for performance-enhancing drugs. The 30-year-old Dominican is unlikely to pitch in the big leagues again after these two suspensions. Martinez spent all nine of his major league seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, being named to the All-Star team twice, in 2015 and 2017. In 2015, he went 14-7 with a 3.01 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 184 strikeouts and 63 walks in 179 2/3 innings over 31 outings (29 starts). C-Mart was with the Boston Red Sox earlier this year on a minor league deal before he was released.

Carlos Martinez Released By Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have released veteran right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez. The 30-year-old had signed a minor league deal with the team just a few weeks back. He made two starts at Triple-A and allowed nine hits, three walks and 10 earned runs over 4.1 innings. Martinez spent nine years in the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals. Last year, he made 16 starts and went 4-9 with a 6.23 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. We'll see if another team is willing to take a chance on Martinez, who was a two-time All-Star for the Cardinals back in 2015 and 2017.

Carlos Martinez Signs Minor League Deal With Boston

Free-agent right-hander Carlos Martinez (thumb) signed a minor-league deal with the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. He agreed to a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants during the offseason but was released in late April. The 30-year-old posted a 6.23 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and 57 strikeouts over 82 1/3 innings for the Cardinals in 2021. After struggling most of the last two seasons, Martinez will look to join the big league roster with a 6.95 ERA. Fantasy managers can leave Martinez on the waiver wire.

Carlos Martinez Agrees With Giants

Free-agent right-hander Carlos Martinez agreed to a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants on Sunday night, according to a source. The deal will be worth $2.5 million if Martinez makes the major league roster and includes $1.5 million in incentives. The two-time All-Star hasn't pitched well in the last two seasons, and he went 4-9 with a 6.23 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 16 starts (82 1/3 innings) for the St. Louis Cardinals last year while striking out 57 and walking 36. Martinez's season ended in late July when he tore a ligament in his right thumb. The 30-year-old Dominican also has some relief experience (31 career saves in nine MLB seasons), so the Giants could decide to use him in relief if he struggles as a starter.

Cardinals Decline Options On Matt Carpenter, Carlos Martinez

St. Louis Cardinals infielder Matt Carpenter and pitcher Carlos Martinez each had their options declined by the club. This was a foregone conclusion in each case, as Carpenter has slashed just .176/.313/.291 with a 29.9 percent strikeout rate since the start of 2020, and Martinez was responsible for a 6.95 ERA in the same time frame. They will be paid buyouts of $2 million and $500 thousand dollars, respectively. While it's likely that each will latch on somewhere in 2022, neither needs to be drafted by fantasy managers to start the season regardless of where they end up.

Carlos Martinez Could Be Done For Year

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Carlos Martinez (thumb) could be done for the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb, according to Zachary Silver of MLB.com. Martinez suffered the injury at the end of June during an appearance at the plate, and prior to landing on the IL he was 4-9 with a 6.23 ERA, 1.372 WHIP and 15.7 percent strikeout rate over 82 1/3 innings of work. He shouldn't have been rostered at this point anyway, but any managers who are still hanging on to him can safely drop him to the waiver wire.

Carlos Martinez's Season Could Be Over

The St. Louis Cardinals moved starting pitcher Carlos Martinez (thumb) to the 60-day injured list on Friday. Martinez is currently exploring surgical options to fix a torn ligament in his thumb. Even if the right-hander doesn't undergo season-ending surgery, he now won't be able to return until sometime in September. On top of that, Martinez hadn't been of much use in most leagues with his 6.23 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and career-low 15.7 percent strikeout rate. At this point, if you were hoping for a turnaround in the second half in deep mixed leagues, you can now cut bait. Martinez's injury probably guarantees that Johan Oviedo, who was sent down on Thursday, will be back in the starting rotation at some point in the second half. However, he's also been mostly unreliable for owners in deeper leagues.

Carlos Martinez Placed On 10-Day Injured List

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Carlos Martinez (thumb) has been placed on the 10-day injured list. He suffered a right thumb sprain while taking an at-bat earlier in the week. The Cardinals have not given a timetable for Martinez, but it wouldn't be shocking to see him miss more than 10 days. Before going down, Martinez was posting a 6.23 ERA and 1.37 WHIP over 82 1/3 innings this season. Outfielder Lars Nootbaar has been recalled to take his spot on the roster. Neither player appears to be much of an asset in fantasy leagues right now.

Carlos Martinez Will Throw Side Session

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez (thumb) will throw a side session Tuesday or Wednesday to determine whether he will pitch Friday against the Cubs. He exited Sunday's start against the Rockies early with a bruised right thumb after the 29-year-old sustained the injury in his lone at-bat. Martinez owns a 6.23 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and a 57:36 K: BB across 82 1/3 innings in 2021. Wade LeBlanc will take the mound on Friday if Martinez is unable to go on Friday. Fantasy managers should look for a different streamer as neither pitcher is a strong option for Friday's slate.

Carlos Martinez Considered Day-To-Day

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Carlos Martinez (thumb) is considered day-to-day with a bruised right thumb. Martinez suffered the injury in his lone at-bat on Sunday against the Colorado Rockies, but it sounds as though the right-hander won't have any problem making his next start. Before leaving the game, he allowed a solo home run while striking out two and walking one in 3 1/3 innings in Colorado. C-Mart had a rough June (10.87 ERA, 25 strikeouts, 19 walks in 25 2/3 innings) and has an ugly 6.23 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 82 1/3 innings over his 16 starts for the Cardinals in 2021. Martinez has gone from a career-high 26.5 percent strikeout rate in 2019 to a career-low 15.7 percent K rate this year, which should be concerning to his fantasy managers. Proceed with plenty of caution his next time out.
