Cincinnati Reds outfielder Mallex Smith has been traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations. The speed outfielder has bounced around lately, but could be an asset to the Blue Jays. He played 22 games in Triple-A with the Reds organization, but could see some time in Toronto. As of right now, he'll be quality outfield depth and a possible base stealing threat for later in the season. Fantasy managers can ignore this move.
The Cincinnati Reds have signed outfielder Mallex Smith to a minor league deal. The 28-year-old speedster signed a deal with the Mets over the winter, but was released in late May. Smith was recovering from a broken foot, but it appears he is healthy now. Smith is a career .255/.325/.361 hitter over his time in the MLB. He is mainly a contact hitter with excellent speed. Smith doesn't have much power in his bat, but he could be an asset because of his speed. However, he'll likely start his Reds career in the minors, so he won't have fantasy value right now.
New York Mets outfielder Mallex Smith was optioned to the team's minor league camp after being advised that he did not make the Opening Day roster on Sunday. Smith hit just .176 with three RBI and three stolen bases in 17 at-bats in Grapefruit League action. In 2020, Smith hit a paltry .133/.170/.178 in 45 AB with the Mariners. The 27-year old will likely need to prove himself in the minors if he wants a shot to get back to the majors in 2021, particularly given the outfield depth the Mets have at the major league level. Smith can be ignored in all fantasy formats.
Seattle Mariners outfielder Mallex Smith was outrighted to Triple-A on Friday, officially removing him from the clubs 40-man roster. It has been a precipitous fall for Smith, who started in right field for Seattle on Opening Day, but slashed just .133/.170/.178 in 14 games, which earned him a demotion to the clubs alternate training site. Having led the Majors with 46 stolen bases last season, the Mariners move to outright Smith indicates that he is likely not in the clubs future plans, zapping any fantasy intrigue for the remainder of the 2020 year.
Mallex Smith Optioned To Club’s Alternate Training Site
Seattle Mariners outfielder Mallex Smith has been demoted from the Major League roster amidst his slow start to the 2020 season. Just a year removed from leading the Majors in stolen bases (46), Smith has swiped just two bags in his first 14 games, having produced a lacking .133/.170/.178 slash line. The move presumably paves the way for Dee Gordon or Tim Lopes to see more at-bats, although Seattles fluctuating lineups make it uncertain which way manager Scott Servais could be leaning. Even with his extraordinary speed, Smith can now safely be dropped in all season-long formats as hell have to earn his way back onto the big league roster.
Seattle Mariners outfielder Mallex Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI and stolen base in Friday's loss to the Rockies. Smith has been a major disappointment to fantasy owners this season hitting just .147 with 11 strikeouts and only two stolen bases. After leading the majors in steals in 2019 with 46, fantasy owners drafted Smith at a premium for those counting stats and he has not delivered. The future doesn't look great for Smith either as he has only started nine of Seattle's 15 games this season. To make matters worse, Smith usually bats 9th when he does play, which limits his plate appearances and minimizes his steals potential. As it stands now, Smith is really only playable in roto and head-to-head category leagues with daily lineups, but even in those leagues the possibility of his steals may not be worth the certainty of him being a detriment in all of the other categories.
Mallex Smith, Shed Long Jr. In Lineup Against Angels
Seattle Mariners outfielder Mallex Smith and second baseman Shed Long Jr. are both back in the lineup for Thursday's contest against the Los Angeles Angels. Long Jr. will man second base and bat sixth while Smith will be in right field and bat eighth. Smith is in a 1-for-15 funk to start his season and is best avoided in all formats. The 24-year-old Long Jr. has four hits and runs scored along with two stolen bases but his eight strikeouts in six games aren't particularly appetizing.
Seattle Mariners outfielder Mallex Smith is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels. The 27-year-old has started slowly at the plate to begin the season, with just one hit in his first 15 plate appearances. Tim Lopes will start in right field and hit fifth against left-hander Andrew Heaney. Lopes is off to a hot start at the plate with a .462 batting average, six hits and a home run, making the 26-year-old a start candidate in deeper formats.
Seattle Mariners outfielder Mallex Smith went 0-for-4, but reached on an error and stole his first base of the season in Tuesday's loss to the Angels. Smith has been a disappointment to start 2020 as he is 1-for-15 with no walks and six strikeouts. Though batting average and plate discipline have never been Smith's strong suits, his inability to reach base has been a big blow to fantasy owners who drafted him as their main steals source. There is hope in the underlying numbers though. So far Smith's BABIP is .111, which is terrible, however he has never had a BABIP under .302 in his career. His slugging percentage is also less than half of his career average. These numbers would suggest that Smith is running into some bad luck and should see some positive regression coming his way. If Smith is able to get back on track, the Mariners could bat him higher in the lineup which would increase his value even more.
Seattle Mariners outfielder Mallex Smith is scheduled to play in his first intrasquad game on Saturday night. Smith had arrived to camp earlier this week and seems to be ready for the start of 2020. Smith led the majors in stolen bases last season with 46 in his first season with the Mariners. Though he may be a liability in batting average, Smith's stolen base potential makes him a great target for steals in rotisserie and head-to-head category leagues.
