Beaty has had decent success against right-handers in his career, posting a .736 OPS and 98 wRC+ against them across 543 trips to the plate. He'll be the designated hitter out of the six-hole Tuesday night in Detroit.

Beaty comes to Kansas City after playing in the minors with the San Francisco Giants this year. The 30-year-old left-handed-hitting first baseman played in four games for the Gigantes and went 1-for-5 with an RBI and two strikeouts. In 30 games at Triple-A Sacramento, he hit .272 (28-for-103) with six doubles, four homers, 23 RBI and 14 runs scored. Beaty will serve as organizational corner-infield depth for the Royals. In parts of five big-league seasons, he has a .249 average with 18 homers, 93 RBI and seven steals in 264 games played.

Beaty is now at the team's complex in Arizona, awaiting the next move. The 29-year-old has been on the shelf since May 7. He was struggling at the plate prior to the shoulder injury, slashing just .108/.175/.189 over 17 games.
