Matt Magill Undergoes Tommy John Surgery

Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Matt Magill (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday and will miss the remainder of the 2020 MLB season as a result. Magill came into the season as a closer option in a crowded (but not very good) Seattle bullpen, and he tossed nine scoreless innings mixed with a pair of poor performances that drove his ERA up to 6.10 for the season. Magill is still arbitration-eligible and will return to the Mariners next season (barring a trade), and the 30-year-old should be in the mix for a sizable role in the Seattle bullpen with his recovery likely to have him ready for the beginning of spring training.

Matt Magill Makes 2020 Debut

Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Matt Magill pitched one scoreless inning while giving up one hit, one walk and striking out two Astros in Sunday's win. Magill was projected to be the closer for Seattle to start 2020 and though Taylor Williams got the save, Magill likely still has the job. Magill came in for the fifth inning when the Mariners were losing after not making an appearance so far this season. The Mariners made a late game comeback to put them into a save situation and that is why Williams got the chance. It's very likely that the Mariners just wanted to give Magill some playing time and brought him in while they were losing to get some action. Fantasy owners should feel confident that the next save opportunity will go to Magill.

Matt Magill Projected To Start 2020 As Closer

Seattle Mariners reliever Matt Magill is expected to start the 2020 season as the team's closer. Magill had originally been projected as the Mariners setup man, butYoshihisa Hiranowas recently moved to the injured list after testing positive for COVID-19. Magill posted a 4.09 ERA between the Minnesota Twins and Seattle Mariners last season but seemed to show improvement after his switch to Seattle. During Magill's time with the Mariners, he had a 3.12 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and struck out 28 batters in 22 1/3 innings. Magill doesn't offer a lot of upside, but with how scarce saves are, he may be worth a flyer until Hirano returns.

Matt Magill Dealing With Shoulder Discomfort

Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Matt Magill (shoulder) is being held back after feeling shoulder discomfort prior to camp. However, Magill said the injury is minor and he threw a bullpen session on Tuesday without issues. The right-hander finished 2019 as the team's closer and is a leading candidate for the same role this season. Barring any setbacks, Magill has enough time to be ready for Opening Day. Yoshihisa Hirano and Sam Tuivailala are the ones lurking if Magill misses any time due to an injury during the season or is demoted from the role for poor performance. Magill's job security won't be very high, so he'll be one of the weaker fantasy closing options late in drafts in deep mixed leagues.

Matt Magill Blows Save Against Rays

Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Matt Magill allowed two runs without recording an out to blow the save Wednesday at Tampa Bay. Magill was tasked with protecting a one-run lead after the Mariners rallied in the top of the ninth, but faced four batters without recording an out as the Rays walked off with the win. Magill had gotten the previous two saves for Seattle and only allowed one hit and no runs in his previous five appearances, but clearly didn't have it this afternoon. Magill's recent success and 28.1 percent strikeout rate should get him another chance, but the Seattle closer job has been fluid most of the season so he'll need to bounce back in his next appearance. Magill should be owned in leagues where saves are scarce but has little value in any other format.
