Matt Strahm Struggles in Setup Role, Allows Two Runs

Kansas City Royals reliever Matt Strahm struggled in a late-inning opportunity Tuesday, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk, including a home run. Matt Strahm has had trouble finding consistency in his first season with Kansas City after strong years in Philadelphia. The 34-year-old now owns a 5.19 ERA through 8.2 innings this season and has allowed five runs in April. He has not limited damage in key situations, and his reliability in a setup role is declining. Strahm still has the experience and pitch mix to rebound, but his current form warrants close monitoring as the Royals evaluate late-inning options.

Matt Strahm Emerging as Must-Stash Closer Handcuff in Royals Bullpen

Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Matt Strahm could be on the verge of taking over at the end of the game for the Royals, so he's worth considering in leagues where you have to be very aggressive looking for saves. Strahm could take over from Lucas Erceg, who has blown his last two save opportunities, including on Monday, when he issued three walks to the Orioles. Erceg doesn't typically strike many batters out, so his control has to be excellent for him to be successful, and it hasn't been in his last two outings. Strahm worked a perfect eighth inning with three strikeouts to earn his sixth hold of the year before giving the ball to Erceg in the ninth. In his eight games this season, Strahm has allowed three runs with nine strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. The 34-year-old lefty has never had more than six saves in a season, but he is an experienced high-leverage reliever who could help the team as a bridge option until Carlos Estevez (foot) is ready to return from the injured list.

Matt Strahm Considered Day-to-Day After Being Hit By a Comebacker

Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Matt Strahm (leg) was diagnosed with a leg contusion and is considered day-to-day after being struck by a line drive against the Rangers. He was removed as a precaution, but the injury doesn't look like it will impact his availability for Opening Day. Strahm was acquired by the Royals from the Phillies, where the 34-year-old has spent the last three seasons. He is expected to fill a high-leverage role in the Royals' bullpen, and he is worth a look in leagues that count holds as a category. He isn't expected to compete for saves, though, while Carlos Estevez is healthy, which limits his value in standard mixed leagues.

Royals Acquire Matt Strahm From Phillies

The Kansas City Royals traded right-hander Jonathan Bowlan to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for left-hander Matt Strahm. Strahm returns to Kansas City, the organization that originally drafted him in 2012. The 34-year-old has spent the last three seasons in Philly, posting a 2.71 ERA with 257 strikeouts across 212 2/3 innings. In Kansas City, Strahm projects as a high-leverage lefty and should be most valuable in leagues that count holds as a statistic. Bowlan, 29, is coming off his first full season in the majors. Last year, the 29-year-old pitched to a 3.86 ERA and a 25.6% strikeout rate across 44 1/3 innings. At this point, it's unclear whether Bowlan will make the major league roster out of spring training. Overall, the move is widely viewed as a salary dump by the Phillies, as Strahm is set to earn $7.5 million next season while Bowlan remains pre-arbitration eligible.

Matt Strahm Records Sixth Save

Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Matt Strahm recorded his sixth save of the season in a 2-1 win over the Padres on Sunday. He allowed two walks, but didn't give up any hits and ultimately left the inning unscathed. Orion Kerkering came in for Cristopher Sanchez in the eighth inning, getting the last two outs of the frame without allowing any runs. This was Strahm's first save since June 29, but that was mainly due to a lack of opportunity. Both Kerkering and Jordan Romano have gone even longer without a save, so it looks like Strahm is holding the top spot in that bullpen for now. The 33-year-old posted a 3.29 ERA with 44 strikeouts and 12 walks in 38 innings in the first half.

Matt Strahm Secures Fifth Save

Philadelphia Phillies left-handed reliever Matt Strahm got out of a jam Sunday to pick up his fifth save in a 2-1 win over the Atlanta Braves. Strahm took the reins in the bottom of the ninth inning and allowed a one-out single and a two-out walk. The Braves had the tying run on third after a wild pitch, but Strahm got Stuart Fairchild to fly out to end the game. Strahm didn't record any strikeouts during his 17-pitch inning. The 33-year-old has been shaky of late, having allowed an earned run in four of his past seven appearances. Nevertheless, Strahm and righty Orion Kerkering have emerged as the Phillies' main options for saves in recent weeks. Strahm carries a 3.78 ERA with 37:9 K:BB and a 1.23 WHIP over 33 1/3 innings.

Matt Strahm Converts Third Save

Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Matt Strahm was called upon to hold a one-run lead against the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday. He didn't need much time to convert the save as he needed only seven pitches to convert his third save of the season. It was a clean outing from Strahm who could begin to see more save chances. Current closer Jordan Romano has allowed three runs over his last four outings. Strahm is someone to watch in fantasy formats right now.

Matt Strahm Dealing With Finger Injury, Expected To Be Ready For Opening Day

Philadelphia Phillies left-handed reliever Matt Strahm (finger) was scheduled to pitch in the team's Grapefruit League game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, but he was scratched du to left middle fingernail irritation after packing in the morning. The issue isn't believed to be serious, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki, and Strahm is still expected to make the Opening Day roster. The 33-year-old veteran has also dealt with inflammation in his left shoulder this spring, which has limited him to only two spring training appearances. Despite the lack of action in Grapefruit League games due to his balky shoulder, that also isn't enough of a concern for the Phillies to keep him off the Opening Day roster. However, Strahm could see more rest between outings than usual to open the regular season. He made his first All-Star squad in 2024 and is the team's top high-leverage lefty arm out of the bullpen.

Matt Strahm To Pitch On Saturday

Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Matt Strahm (shoulder) is scheduled to throw in a minor-league game on Saturday. If that goes well, Strahm would hopefully be cleared to pitch during Monday's spring training contest. The organization is hopeful that Strahm will be ready to go in time for Opening Day. The veteran southpaw is coming off an excellent season with the Phillies last season. He registered a 1.87 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, and 79/11 K/BB ratio across 66 games with Philly. The 33-year-old is expected to immediately slide into high-leverage spots in the Phillies bullpen.

Matt Strahm Will Be Evaluated Again On Saturday

Philadelphia Phillies left-handed pitcher Matt Strahm (shoulder) will be re-evaluated on Saturday. Manager Rob Thompson noted that he is feeling better. Strahm has been dealing with an impingement in his left shoulder and could be in danger of missing Opening Day. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as the team will likely provide clarity on his status after his evaluation on Saturday. Last season, the southpaw was one of the most reliable arms in the Philadelphia bullpen as he held a strong 1.87 ERA with a 0.75 WHIP across 62 2/3 innings. He tallied 79 punchouts and had elite control, serving up walks at a 4.6 percent rate. He tallied three saves and 18 holds. If Strahm were to miss time, fantasy managers should expect Orion Kerkering and Jose Alvarado to be deployed primarily as the setup options.
