Miguel Montero News

Matt Wieters Activated From DL, Miguel Montero Designated For Assignment

Washington Nationals catcher Matt Wieters (oblique) was activated from the disabled list on Wednesday and backup catcher Miguel Montero was designated for assignment to make room for Wieters. Montero had gone hitless this season and was made redundant with the excellent play of catcher Pedro Severino. The Nationals now have 10 days to trade Montero or seven days to pass him through waivers. If Montero clears waivers, he can be sent down to the minors. But general manager Mike Rizzo is indicating that the club will likely let him go to pursue playing time with another team. Wieters went 1-for-4 in his rehab stint with High-A Potomac on Tuesday. He hasn't hit very well and could lose significant playing time to Severino, who is increasingly looking like a fantasy sleeper.

Miguel Montero Returns From Paternity Leave, Jhonatan Solano To DL

Washington Nationals catcher Miguel Montero has returned from paternity leave. Recent call-up Jhonatan Solano (elbow) will go on the 10-day disabled list with bone spurs in his elbow. The Nationals will have quite the conundrum once Matt Wieters returns from the DL, possibly later this week. Pedro Severino has been great and the team is thinking about keeping three catchers on their roster. Montero can not be sent down and would need to be designated for assignment if the team only goes with Wieters and Severino.

Miguel Montero Goes On Paternity Leave

Washington Nationals catcher Miguel Montero has gone on paternity leave and will be away from the team up to three days. Jhonatan Solano, a former Marlin, has been called up to take his place and back up Pedro Severino. Solano hasn't played a major league game since 2015 and isn't relevant for fantasy purposes.

Brian Goodwin, Miguel Montero To Start

Washington Nationals outfielder Brian Goodwin will start in center and Miguel Montero will be behind the plate at catcher on Tuesday. Goodwin will bat seventh, followed by Montero batting eighth. Goodwin has really been seeing the ball well to start the season. In seven at-bats, he's got three hits, one home run and seven RBI. Unfortunately, the former first-rounder is blocked by Michael Taylor, though the two have a similar skill set. They might just be keeping the seat warm until outfield prospectVictor Robles is called up. Montero offers very little fantasy-wise. But with starter Matt Wieters on the disabled list, he could see more starts.

Koda Glover Starts 2018 On DL, Miguel Montero Takes Roster Spot

Washington Nationals reliever Koda Glover (shoulder) will begin the season on the 60-day disabled list due to shoulder tendinitis. Backup catcher Miguel Montero will take his spot on the 40-man roster. Glover, who was once being groomed as the team's closer, has battled injuries to his hip, back and shoulder for the past two seasons. Montero's only recent claim to fame is his ignominious release from the Cubs last year after criticizing pitcherJake Arrieta. He may provide some value in deep two-catcher or NL-only leagues.

Miguel Montero Will Be The Backup Catcher In Washington

Washington Nationals catcher Miguel Montero will be the Nationals' backup catcher to start the year, according to Jamal Collier of MLB.com. The 34-year-old was in camp as a non-roster invitee, but showed enough (or perhaps competition Pedro Severino failed to show enough) to earn the roster spot. He will back up starter Matt Wieters.

Miguel Montero Signs With Nationals

Free-agent catcher Miguel Montero signed with the Washington Nationals on Thursday, according to Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post. Montero will compete for the backup catcher job in Washington and is comfortable with Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo (who signed him with the Diamondbacks) and new manager Dave Martinez (who coached him in Chicago). Montero is coming off of a 2017 season where he hit .216 between the Cubs and Blue Jays, but he is a two-time All-Star who has posted an .800 OPS in three separate seasons. While he may not get a lot of plate appearances, he does have a .781 OPS against right-handed pitchers in his career, making him a nice plug-and-play against a righty if Matt Wieters needs a game off.

Miguel Montero Nearing Rehab Games

Toronto Blue Jays catcher Miguel Montero ran the bases on Monday, and will now head to Triple-A Buffalo for a few games of rehab work. The veteran catcher has been out since early August with a groin strain. This is great for Montero, but not exactly a lot of fantasy impact here. Russell Martin continues to be the primary backstop up north, and isn't in any danger of being unseated by Montero. Still, if he were to take over the position at some point, there could be fantasy value at a position that doesn't have much. For now, though, even when he returns healthy he should be left on your waiver wire.

Miguel Montero Hits Disabled List

Toronto Blue Jays catcher Miguel Montero left his team's game early on Wednesday with a groin injury, and now we've learned it's going to take some time to heal; Montero was placed on the disabled list on Friday. Chances are, you aren't rostering Montero nor was it really a thought in your mind. Since being dealt to Toronto, he's slashing a putrid .083/.214/.167 (.381 OPS) across 42 plate appearances while backing up regular backstop Russell Martin. In the interim, catcher Raffy Lopez has been summoned from Triple-P to provide some depth behind the dish. There's no fantasy value of any kind here.

Miguel Montero Leaves With Strained Groin

Toronto Blue Jays catcher Miguel Montero was forced to leave Wednesday's game against the Chicago White Sox with a strained groin. Montero was replaced behind the dish by Russell Martin after suffering the injury in the seventh inning. For now, consider Montero day-to-day; he'll be reevaluated on Thursday. The 34-year-old has gotten off to a slow start since going north of the border. He's slashing a measly .091/.231/.182 (.413 OPS) with a home run, five runs scored, and three RBI across 39 plate appearances with his new squad. Even with healthy, Montero shouldn't be considered a fantasy option with Martin entrenched as Toronto's everyday backstop.
