Matt Wieters News
St. Louis Cardinals catcher Matt Wieters has been activated from the injured list prior to Fridays contest against the Cubs, with Andrew Knizner being optioned to the clubs alternate site to make room on the active roster. Wieters last appeared Aug. 19, having been sidelined due to a toe contusion. With Yadier Molina firmly entrenched as the teams everyday catcher, Wieters isnt likely to see much playing time, as he is still in search of his first hit of 2020, having gone 0-for-12 with four strikeouts to begin the year.
The St. Louis Cardinals re-signed catcher Matt Wieters to a one-year, $2 million deal on Wednesday. The 33-year-old will return as the backup to veteran Yadier Molina after playing in 67 games in 2019. The four-time All-Star with the Orioles hit 11 home runs and threw out eight of 19 potential base stealers during last season. He's hit .250 with 146 home runs (sixth all time among switch-hitting backstops) and 546 RBI in 1,148 career games. Wieters won't have any fantasy appeal unless Molina misses more time due to injury in 2020.
St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Dexter Fowler (rest) and catcher Matt Wieters (rest) are out of the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Both players are getting routine days off here to rest. Lane Thomas will cover center field and bat eighth in this contest. Andrew Knizner will cover behind the plate and bat seventh versus lefty Steven Brault. Neither player is a reliable fantasy option for this game.
