Angels Release Miguel Sano

The Los Angeles Angels released third baseman Miguel Sano over the weekend after he went unclaimed off waivers. Sano will now have the All-Star break this week to look for another organization to latch onto as corner-infield depth. After not playing in the big leagues at all in 2023, Sano made the Angels roster out of spring training this year but hit just .205/.295/.313 with a .608 OPS, two home runs, six RBI and 36 strikeouts in 95 trips to the plate over 28 games for the Halos before being designated for assignment. He became expendable once Anthony Rendon returned from a lengthy stint on the injured list in the first half of the season. Sano does have two 30-homer seasons in his career, but he'll likely have to settle for a minor-league deal elsewhere as he tries to work his way back to the big leagues.

Miguel Sano Activated On Tuesday

Los Angeles Angels third baseman Miguel Sano (knee) has been activated from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday. The veteran slugger is back in the mix following a two-month absence due to a left knee injury. Sano hasn't brought much to the table this season with one home run and five RBI in 21 games. In a corresponding move, infielder Michael Stefanic has been optioned to the minors.

Miguel Sano Pulled From Rehab Assignment, Has No Timetable To Return

Los Angeles Angels infielder Miguel Sano (knee) was returned from his minor-league rehab assignment after the burn that he suffered from a heating pad did not heal. Sano took the protection off of a heating pad to make it hotter and burned himself, and he's now headed back to Anaheim with no timetable for a return. The 31-year-old corner infielder initially landed on the injured list with a left-knee injury and now has suffered a setback due to his burn. He'll now get some time to heal up before eventually restarting his minor-league rehab assignment. Before the injury, Sano was hitting .262 (16-for-61) but with just one home run and five RBI in his first year with the Angels. In his absence, veteran Luis Guillorme and Luis Rengifo have been splitting time at third base for the team.

Miguel Sano Still Bothered By Knee

Los Angeles Angels infielder/designated hitter Miguel Sano (knee) was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 1 with left-knee inflammation in his surgically repaired knee after leaving games early on April 24 and 26 with left-knee soreness. Sano has been taking ground balls, but his knee continues to bother him when he swings a bat. The 31-year-old is not going to be ready to return from the injured list anytime soon. Willie Calhoun could continue to see at-bats as the Halos' designated hitter until/if Sano is able to return. The Angels are pretty beat up on the infield, but they could be getting Luis Rengifo (illness) back this weekend to play third base regularly. Before injuring his surgically repaired knee, Sano was hitting .262 (16-for-61) with a homer and five RBI in his first 21 games with the organization. Sano didn't play at all in 2023.

Angels Put Miguel Sano On 10-Day Injured List

The Los Angeles Angels placed corner infielder Miguel Sano (knee) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to April 28) on Wednesday and selected the contract of outfielder Willie Calhoun from the minors in a corresponding move. Right-hander Zac Kristofak was also designated for assignment. Sano hasn't played since last Friday due to left-knee inflammation and will now miss more time. The 30-year-old former Twin has gotten off to a decent start with a .262 average (16-for-61) in his first year with the Halos, but his signature power has yet to show up. Sano has gone deep just once and has driven in only five runs before injuring his knee. Until Sano returns, Luis Rengifo should play daily for the Angels at either third base or second base.

Miguel Sano To Miss Another Game

Los Angeles Angels third baseman Miguel Sano (knee) remains out of the starting lineup ahead of Monday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The right-handed slugger is still dealing with a lingering knee issue that forced him to exit early last Wednesday. He was able to return to the lineup later in the week but sat out on both Saturday and Sunday. The hope is that Sano will be able to avoid a trip to the injured list. Ehire Adrianza will cover third base during Monday's game.

Miguel Sano Dealing With Minor Injury

Los Angeles Angels third baseman Miguel Sano (knee) is still banged up after being pulled from Wednesday's game due to left knee soreness. The right-handed slugger was able to play on Friday but then sat out on Saturday. Sano had an MRI on his knee, which revealed inflammation in his left knee. The organization is currently considering Sano as day-to-day right now. Luis Rengifo figures to see additional playing time until Sano is ready again.

Miguel Sano Makes Opening Day Roster

Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington confirmed on Tuesday that first baseman Miguel Sano has made the team's Opening Day roster. "He's very deserving," Washington said. Sano is looking to bounce back in the big leagues with the Angels in 2024 after not playing at all in 2023. The former All-Star with the Minnesota Twins in 2017 reportedly lost 58 pounds in the offseason after playing just 20 games in his final year in Minnesota in 2022 due to a knee injury. The 30-year-old right-handed slugger has reached the 30-homer mark twice in his career, including his last full season in 2021, but he's never hit for average and is a pretty big injury risk as he looks to help fill some of the Halos' designated hitter at-bats this year. At best, he's an AL-only flier for some power to begin the year.

Miguel Sano Agrees To Join Angels

Free-agent corner infielder/designated hitter Miguel Sano and the Los Angeles Angels agreed to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training on Tuesday, according to sources. Sano is currently playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic after not playing last summer. The Halos are taking a low-cost flier on a 30-year-old right-handed power bat as they seek more offense heading into the 2024 season. Sano played in only 20 games in his last season in the bigs in 2022 with the Minnesota Twins, battled knee injuries and went 5-for-60 (.083) with one homer and three RBI. If he's healthy, Sano will compete for at-bats in the designated hitter role vacated when two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani signed with the crosstown-rival Los Angeles Dodgers. Sano reached the 30-homer mark in both 2019 and 2021, but expecting him to return to that level is probably a pipe dream.

Miguel Sano Hosting Workout Next Week

Former Minnesota Twins first baseman/designated hitter Miguel Sano will host a workout for scouts next Tuesday in Tampa, Florida. Sano became a free agent when the Twins declined his option last November for the 2023 season. A knee injury limited the 29-year-old slugger to just 71 plate appearances in 2022, and he hit just .083/.211/.133 with a .345 OPS, one home run, three RBI, one run scored and a stolen base in 20 games played. However, Sano reached the 30-homer mark as recently as 2021, so his raw power could attract some teams with spring training approaching if he can prove he's over the knee injury that slowed him down last year.
