Detroit Tigers outfielder Mikie Mahtook had two strikeouts on Tuesday and is now 0-for-23 for the season and 0-for-31 since his last hit, a single last September. His hitless streak is the longest by a Tigers non-pitcher to open a year, according to Elias Sports Bureau. Mahtook also made an error in center field on Tuesday and was left out of the lineup on Wednesday. The 29-year-old is more of a defensive specialist to begin with and is seeing more playing time in the outfield with JaCoby Jones (shoulder) injured to begin the season. Mahtook isn't even a good option in AL-only formats.
Detroit Tigers outfielder Mikie Mahtook has been recalled to the starting lineup and will bat leadoff on Monday against the Toronto Blue Jays. His promotion from Triple-A comes in response to outfielder Leonys Martin (hamstring) being placed on the disabled list. Mahtook is the only change to the Tigers lineup for Monday, although its interesting to see him bat leadoff. In limited time this season hes only batted .188. That said, he has shown intriguing power in his career, but can be left on the waiver wire for the time being.
Mikie Mahtook Expected to Be Called Up From Triple-A
Detroit Tigers outfielder Mikie Mahtook is expected to be called up to replace the injured Leonys Martin. Mahtook got off to a horrible start to 2018 and was demoted fairly quickly. He's hitting .261/.333/.450 in Triple-A with eight home runs and five steals in 53 games. Mahtook still has potential for a combination of power and speed so he is worth a look in AL-only leagues if outfield is a need.
Detroit Tigers outfielder Mikie Mahtook has been off to an abysmal start this season with .129 average and 10 strikeouts on the year. As a result, the Tigers have decided to send him to Toledo to "get his swing together and get his confidence back," manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters. Mahtook had a nice year last season, batting .276 with 12 homers, but that hasn't carried over into the 2018 campaign. In a subsequent move, the Tigers have called up left-hander Chad Bell, as they are in need of a pitcher following Wednesday's injury to Jordan Zimmermann.
Detroit Tigers outfielder Mikie Mahtook is coming into his first camp where he has a starting job, but MLB.com's Jason Beck says that Mahtook is looking for more. "The main goal in Spring Training is to be ready for the season and be the best player you possibly can be, whether you're a starter or trying to compete for a spot," Mahtook said. Mahtook was successful in stints with the Rays, namely when he posted 15 extra-base hits in just 105 at-bats in 2015, but really stuck with the Tigers last season. He played 109 games in left field (348 at-bats) and had 33 extra-base hits while going a perfect 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts. Mahtook could be a nice sleeper to pick up at the end of drafts, but he should not be a core player in any format.
Detroit Tigers outfielder Mikie Mahtook (groin) is back in the lineup Friday, serving as the designated hitter while batting eighth against White Sox starter Carson Fulmer. Mahtook has been a bright spot in the second half for a Tigers team that is limping to the finish line. He's mainly known for his speed and defense, but Mahtook has hit pretty well with regular playing time and has been useful in AL-only leagues. He's not a great play while hitting eighth in DFS Friday, though.
Detroit Tigers outfielder Mikie Mahtook (groin) is expected to return no later than Saturday, according to manager Brad Ausmus. Mahtook has been one of the few bright spots in the second half for the Tigers, and he's hitting a respectable .276 with 11 home runs, 34 RBI and five steals on the season. He'll continue to be useful in AL-only leagues down the stretch when he returns.
Detroit Tigers outfielder Mikie Mahtook (groin) is out of the lineup again Wednesday, but he ran hard for the first time on Tuesday and is closer to returning. The rangy center fielder has yet to play since Friday since injuring his groin. He's been a respectable fill-in for a team that waved the white flag long ago and traded off most of their valuable assets. Mahtook is hitting .276 on the season with 11 homers and five stolen bases, and he's been useful in the second half in AL-only leagues.
Aside from perennially-productive Justin Upton, there has been no hotter hitter as of late for the Detroit Tigers than outfielder Mikie Mahtook. Since the break, Mahtook is hitting .400 with two doubles and two homers across 20 at-bats. Manager Brad Ausmus has responded to the hot streak by moving Mahtook up to the fifth slot in the lineup. Fantasy owners looking for a short-term boost or for a hot hand in DFS leagues should look to Mahtook, but he's still not recommended for long-term fantasy purposes, despite his potential increase in playing time following the J.D. Martinez trade.
Mikie Mahtook Making Case For Everyday Job In Center
Detroit Tiger outfielder Mikie Mahtook has been playing rather well as of late, and is making a strong case for an everyday role as the team's center fielder. The CF situation in Detroit has been a mess all season long--and, really, ever since the Tigers traded away Cameron Maybin in the offseason. JaCoby Jones started the season there, but the position has been a revolving-door of a platoon ever since. However, in 16 games since May 31, Mahtook is hitting .357 with a .595 slugging percentage and a .952 OPS. Though he's gotten most of his work when there is a lefty on the mound, his splits are similar — .250 against right-handers and .255 against lefties. He's basically left manager Brad Ausmus with no choice but to play him, as the struggling Tigers will take any hot bat they can get. As long as he's hot, he provides some value and depth in AL-only or the deepest mixed leagues.
