Mychal Givens News
Colorado Rockies reliever Mychal Givens took the loss against the Dodgers on Saturday after he allowed two runs on two hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout over one inning. Givens entered the game in the top of the eighth inning with the score knotted up at 4-4. He got two quick outs via pop-out before serving up a flukey inside the park home run to Zach McKinstry. McKinstry launched a ball to left-field and Raimel Tapia scaled the wall to rob him but accidentally knocked the ball back into the field of play as his body slammed into the fence. Tapia thought the ball had gone over the wall so he sat on the field for several seconds before realizing the ball was sitting to his right. McKinstry kept running the entire time and put the Dodgers ahead with his inside-the-park home run. Givens then walked back-to-back batters before Chris Taylor laced an RBI double to left field. He then struck out Cody Bellinger to end the frame but the damage had been done. This was Givens' first appearance of the season and if not for some bad luck he probably could have preserved the tie. He doesn't hold much fantasy value as he's not the closer and is one of a handful of arms that Colorado uses in high-leverage situations.
Colorado Rockies reliever Mychal Givens blew a save and took the loss in Sunday's Cactus League game vs. the Kansas City Royals. It was an ugly outing for Givens, who allowed two runs on two hits while walking three over just 2/3 innings. Givens entered the game in top of the sixth inning with the Rockies leading by a score of 2-1. He didn't even last an inning as he walked three batters and allowed a two-run shot to Adalberto Mondesi. He was credited with a blown save and ended up taking the loss. The 30-year-old RHP has had a rough Cactus League for the Rockies, posting a 8.53 ERA, 2.05 WHIP, and 7:6 K/BB ratio over 6 1/3 innings. We shouldn't read too much into spring numbers but it hasn't been pretty for Givens. With Scott Oberg likely done for the season, Givens has a chance to serve as the bridge to closer Daniel Bard. Even if he can earn a high-leverage role he's not a recommended fantasy option.
The Colorado Rockies signed right-handed reliever Mychal Givens to a one-year, $4.05 million deal on Thursday to avoid salary arbitration. The Rockies traded for Givens in a deal with the Orioles on Aug. 3, and he allowed at least one run in five of his 10 outings for Colorado. He allowed two runs in 13 innings over 12 games for Baltimore before being dealt to the Rockies. Combined, he went 1-1 with a 3.61 ERA and will turn 31 years old on May 13 of this year. The second-round pick in 2009 is 21-17 with a 3.41 ERA and 21 saves in 345 1/3 innings in his career. Daniel Bard figures to open the season as the Rockies closer, with Givens serving in a late-inning setup role. Coors Field isn't the best place to make a name for a relief pitcher, making Givens mostly unattractive for fantasy purposes.
