Paul Sewald Remains Top Option For Saves on the Waiver Wire

Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed closer Paul Sewald has converted on 14 of his 15 save opportunities this season and owns a 3.80 ERA and 0.75 WHIP with 24 strikeouts and 21 1/3 innings pitched. The 14 saves on the season are tied for third in MLB behind Cade Smith and Mason Miller, and the 15 opportunities are tied for fifth. While Sewald's velocity isn't elite (91.4 mph average fastball velocity), he has still demonstrated solid control and high strikeout upside. In fact, hitters are hitting .146 of his four-seamer, and he has a solid 21.4 percent whiff rate on his fastball, even though the velocity isn't there. During a season where the closer situation has been difficult to navigate because of injuries and some of the top arms underperforming, Sewald continues to be one of the top options for saves, and is a must-add if available on the waiver wire.

Paul Sewald Remains Top Saves Source on Waiver Wire

Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald worked around a solo home run to earn his 13th save of the season on Tuesday while striking out one in Arizona's win. It was the sixth save in his last eight appearances, as Sewald continues to strengthen his grip on the closer role. The veteran right-hander owns a 3.98 ERA with a stellar 0.79 WHIP and 23 strikeouts across 20 innings this season. Sewald is now tied for second in the National League in saves in his first year back with Arizona. His ability to limit baserunners has helped minimize damage in late innings, and he remains a high-level fantasy target as save opportunities continue to pile up.

Paul Sewald Allows Three Runs in Blown Save, Cause for Concern?

Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Paul Sewald took a tough loss on Wednesday night, letting a game get away against the Texas Rangers after his team rallied in the top of the ninth. Arizona scored three times to take a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but Sewald ran into trouble after getting the first two outs of the inning. He gave up a game-tying single to Jake Burger as one of the three hits he allowed, and after he was removed, Juan Morillo allowed one of his inherited runners to score on a walk-off single by Danny Jansen. Sewald's loss dropped him to 0-4 on the year with a 4.70 ERA and 4.35 FIP. He had nine saves in nine opportunities before Wednesday's blown save, and the veteran righty should remain the clear closer for the Snakes at this point. Sewald's peripheral numbers aren't elite, but as a volume producer of saves, he still has value as long as he remains the team's top closer. However, this is a situation to keep an eye on, as it could become a pattern that costs him his role.

Paul Sewald Earns Ninth Save, Remains High-Volume Saves Option

Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Paul Sewald remains a very solid option at the end of the game, as he picked up his ninth save of the year on Monday night against the Rangers. Sewald entered a 1-0 game and worked a hitless ninth inning, allowing just one baserunner on a hit-by-pitch. The 35-year-old righty has converted all nine of his save opportunities this season, allowing five earned runs on six hits in 14 2/3 innings for a 3.07 ERA and 4.34 FIP. While he isn't the most dominant option in the league, Sewald consistently sees opportunities as the primary ninth-inning option for Arizona. He has nine saves in Arizona's 20 wins this season, and that total ties him for seventh-most in the majors. If he's available on the waiver wire in a league where you need saves, he's definitely worth a look, given his safe floor.

Paul Sewald Stumbles in Non-Save Situation, Will Look to Bounce Back Next Time Out

Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald stumbled a bit on Thursday in a non-save situation against the Chicago White Sox, where he allowed three earned runs on one hit and two walks. It was Andrew Benintendi who did the damage, taking him 410 feet to right-center to give the White Sox the lead and tag Sewald with the loss. Outside of Thursday's outing, Sewald has been a pleasant surprise for fantasy managers, as he's converted on seven of his seven save opportunities, and appears to have a firm grasp on the closer role with the Diamondbacks, with Thursday's non-save situation being a blip on the radar. Even with the three earned runs allowed Thursday (he's allowed five earned runs on the season), he owns a 4.50 ERA and 0.90 WHIP with 12 strikeouts in 10 innings pitched and 12 appearances. While the metrics under the hood aren't all that fascinating, Sewald is converting on his save opportunities, and as long as he continues to do that, he should remain on your fantasy rosters, as he is tied for second in MLB with his seven saves.

Paul Sewald the Priority Target for Saves on the Waiver Wire

Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald is tied with Mason Miller for the league lead in saves with six. Injuries limited the veteran to just 59 1/3 innings pitched between 2024 and 2025, but he saved 34 games in 2023 while registering a 3.12 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 22.5 percent K-BB%. The 35-year-old appears fully healthy and currently has much better numbers than in that 2023 season, with a 2.45 ERA, 0.55 WHIP, and an elite 38.5 percent K-BB%, which can largely be attributed to the fact that he has yet to walk a batter this season. The right-hander doesn't light up the radar, with just an average fastball velocity of 91.5 mph (12th percentile), but he's been able to keep hitters off balance and limit traffic. The 6-foot-3 hurler is no Mason Miller when it comes to strikeouts, but at 58 percent rostered compared to Miller's 99 percent, Sewald's rostership should be much higher, and he remains the top target for saves on the waiver wire.

Paul Sewald Earns Save No. 6 on Tuesday, Extends Scoreless Streak

Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald earned his league-leading sixth save of the season in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Orioles, striking out one batter and needing just 11 pitches to dispatch Baltimore in the bottom of the ninth. Sewald has been impressive this season, not having allowed an earned run in five straight appearances and eight of nine overall, producing a 2.45 ERA. Perhaps even more notable is that the veteran has yet to walk a batter, while striking out 10 and recording a miserly 0.55 WHIP in a total of 7 1/3 innings of work. Surprisingly, the 35-year-old is still available in almost half of Yahoo! leagues for the taking, and is a no-brainer add in leagues where saves are rewarded.

Paul Sewald Tallies Fourth Save, Remains Reliever to Roster in Arizona

Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Paul Sewald pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his fourth save of 2026 in his team's 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday. Across 5 1/3 innings pitched, the 35-year-old has posted a 3.38 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, and seven strikeouts. Sewald no longer profiles as the reliable option he once was at his peak, as he recorded back-to-back seasons with an ERA north of 4.30 in 2024 and 2025. He also allowed an elevated 1.83 HR/9 in 2025 and has already given up two long balls in 2026. Still, the veteran right-hander owns 90 career saves, including 33 as a member of the Diamondbacks. His experience in the ninth inning could give him some runway as the Arizona closer, even if he hits a rough patch. In any league where he's not already rostered, Sewald is worth targeting on the waiver wire.

Paul Sewald is Favorite for Saves in Arizona

Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Paul Sewald notched his third save of the season versus the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. Sewald needed 21 pitches to work a scoreless ninth, which included two strikeouts. The veteran right-hander is now 3-for-3 in save situations with four scoreless innings over five total appearances. It seems likely that the D-Backs stick with Sewald as the closer going forward. The 35-year-old is an experienced option with 89 career saves and appears to be the most trustworthy option at the moment. Fantasy managers in need of saves or a reliever should consider adding Sewald.

Paul Sewald Earns Second Save, Emerging as Arizona's Go-to Ninth-Inning Option

Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Paul Sewald continued his strong start Tuesday against the Detroit Tigers, earning his second save of the season with a clean inning. Sewald struck out the side and has yet to allow a baserunner through 2 1/3 innings of work this year. His early dominance positions him for more opportunities as Arizona works to solidify its closer role. Sewald saw limited innings last season in Detroit, but he has shown the ability to anchor the back end of a bullpen. The 35-year-old owns a 4.09 ERA and 1.14 WHIP across 398 career innings and is quickly building momentum in Arizona.
